Reese Witherspoon Launches Global Partnership To End Violence Against Women

Reese Witherspoon joined forces with Avon in 2007 to help end violence against women and has continued to support the cause. On March 10, 2010, Witherspoon – along with the CEO of Avon – joined the State Department and Vital Voices to launch the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women during a breakfast meeting in the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin Franklin Diplomatic Room.

The Global Partnership was formed to assist women that have been, or will be, affected by violence at some point in their life. This conference focused on the three most pervasive crimes against women: domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. A global action plan was developed, which included the advocacy campaigns being started in India and Argentina.

Stars Turn Out For Kevin James' Make-A-Wish Fun Day

Kevin and Steffiana James joined with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to host a picture-perfect Sunday of fun at Santa Monica Pier’s Pacific Park for more than 1,200 Make-A-Wish kids and their families from Los Angeles and surrounding cities on Sunday, March 14.

Pacific Park was closed for the event as celebrity friends of the James’ including Sasha Alexander, Tom Arnold, Mischa Barton, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Leslie Bibb, Matt Bomer, Linda Cardellini, Rosario Dawson, Drea de Matteo, Tracey Edmonds, Todd Garner, Elizabeth Gillies, Regina Hall, Ali Landry, Stephen Moyer, Parminder Nagra, Anna Paquin, Harold Parrineau, Charlotte Ross, Maya Rudolph, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Nick Turturro and Abigail Spencer came out to meet the kids, host various games and enjoy the Pier.

Nickelodeon stars Ashley Argota, Danielle Bisutti, Ron Butler, Stephen Glickman, Gage Golightly, Ariana Grande, Nathan Kress, Daniella Monet, Nick Purcell, Matt Shively and Leon Thomas spent the afternoon manning the booths, signing autographs and taking pictures with the wish kids while DJ J. Boogie kept the party in good spirits with great music.

 "This was a beautiful, joy-filled day for our wish kids and their families. We are truly grateful to Kevin and Steffiana James for hosting this celebration and rallying the celebrity community to support the Make-A-Wish mission and our fantastic kids," said David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer.

Adam Sandler, who attended with his children, signed scores of autographs and posed for pictures with wish families, while Mischa Barton had her face painted and helped out at the Ring Toss before hopping on a few rides. Tom Arnold put his enthusiasm for the afternoon into the Darts booth, and Leslie Bibb kept kids entertained at the Cat Rack game. Matt Bomer manned the Water Guns station, while Kevin James and Elizabeth Gillies took turns at the Plates booth. Anna Paquin joined Stephen Moyer and his daughter for a fun-filled afternoon, even taking a spin together on the Scrambler.

Kevin James To Host Make-A-Wish Foundation Fun Day

Comedian Kevin James will host a special charity day of fun for the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Sunday, March 14, and he has enlisted the help of a whole bunch of his celebrity friends.

The event will take place at the Santa Monica Pier for Make-A-Wish children and their families from Los Angeles and surrounding cities. The Santa Monica Pier will be closed down for the event as celebrity friends of Kevin and his wife come out to meet the children, and host rides and booths at the Pier. Although they are not granting specific wishes on Sunday, they will give these courageous children a day they will never forget.

Stars slated to attend include Mischa Barton, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Sophia Bush, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Hudgens, Ali Landry, Juliette Lewis, Christian Slater and many more.

The event takes place from 11am-2pm.

Hugh Grant Launches Charity Daffodil Appeal With Video

Hugh Grant has launched Marie Curie Cancer Care's Great Daffodil Appeal calling on people all over the UK to make a donation and wear a daffodil pin – the charity’s emblem – throughout March.

Hugh has supported the charity as a fundraiser and ambassador since his mother died at home in 2001, cared for by Marie Curie Nurses. The actor has made a short film to promote the appeal. The film can be viewed here.

The film features charity fundraiser Maria Gleeson and Marie Curie Nurse Lorna McGarry.

Maria’s husband Paul died two years ago and was cared for at home by Marie Curie Nurses. She first learned about the Marie Curie Nursing Service when she heard Hugh Grant being interviewed on the radio. By this time her husband was critically ill and Maria was finding it difficult to cope on her own.

Maria said: “By 10pm that same day, we had a Marie Curie Nurse on our doorstep. The nurses were wonderful and gave some much needed emotional and practical support to all the family, allowing Paul to stay at home until he died”.

Hugh said: "Like Maria, I know from my own experience that Marie Curie Nurses provide care to terminally ill patients, allowing them to die in their own homes, which is where most of us would like to be. Marie Curie can’t deliver this service without donations from the public and I urge everyone to dig in their pockets, make a donation and wear a daffodil with pride.

“Volunteer fundraisers will be out collecting in town centres throughout March and daffodil pins can also be picked up from thousands of local stores, schools and Marie Curie shops across the UK.”

“The care we are able to provide makes such a difference to patients and their loved ones,” says Nurse Lorna in the film. “So often, we arrive in people’s homes as professionals and leave as family friends.”

The charity is hoping to raise £5 million throughout the month long UK appeal. Money raised from the appeal will provide more free nursing care for people with a terminal illness in their own homes and the charity’s hospices. For further information and to view the films, click here.

Poker fans will be itching to get their hands on a poker table signed by some great celebrities being auctioned for charity.

The San Manuel table has been signed by KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, as well as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ray Romano, Magic Johnson, Mary Hart, Huell Hauser and Mayor Villaraigosa. 100% of the proceeds will go to City of Hope, a research, treatment and educational institution dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

A bunch of celebrities will join 15,000 cancer charity supporters in pulling on their running shoes and joining the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Race For The Cure event at Dodger Stadium, LA, next week.

On March 4, 2010, Vanity Fair and BMW partnered with The Art of Elysium to host The Art of Elysium “Pieces of Heaven” Art Auction, in partnership with Christie’s, at the Palihouse Holloway in Los Angeles.

The event was hosted by Amy Smart and Scott Caan, along with Cameron Silver and Jeff Snyder, Laura Villaseñor and Andrew Wilding, Ali Larter and Hayes MacArthur, and Topher Grace.

Additional notable attendees included David Arquette, Rosanna Arquette, Editor-in-Chief of Vanity Fair Graydon Carter, Nicky Hilton, Ryan Kavanaugh, Anna Kendrick, Boucheron’s Masako Kumakura, Rose McGowan, Vanity Fair Publisher Edward Menicheschi, Mark Mothersbaugh, BMW North America’s Vice President Jack Pitney, Louise Roe, Vinessa Shaw, Elijah Wood and more.

Elijah Wood acted as DJ while celebrities, art patrons and LA influentials had a chance to preview more than 50 works of art donated by artists, dealers and private collectors. BMW’s longstanding commitment to the arts and their “Joy” campaign made them a perfect fit for The Art of Elysium. For the first time in his career, Shepard Fairey, one of the world’s most renowned and influential contemporary artists, is auctioning off a coveted portrait sitting.

Kelly Ripa Hosts Charity Cake Off

The flour was flying recently as self-proclaimed baking enthusiast Kelly Ripa and accomplished master baker and cake decorator Buddy Valastro, from TLC’s “Cake Boss,” joined forces at Manhattan’s trendy Chelsea Market to bake lavishly decorated cakes for a cause. The pair teamed up with Electrolux Appliances to host Kelly’s Cake Off in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Sheryl Crow To Play At William Shatner's Charity Horse Show

William Shatner will host his annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show on May 1 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank.

Shatner has been hosting the charity horse shows for the last twenty years – inspired after he watched an exhibition by children who were so severely handicapped that some of them could not hold their head up, yet there they were going through intricate exercises on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children. In 1990, Shatner hosted his first charity horse show, and the event has become a major fixture on the charity calendar.

This year’s event will include a special performance by Sheryl Crow and will benefit AHEAD with Horses, Camp Max Straus, Starlight Children's Foundation, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Hollenbeck Police Activities League, The Painted Turtle and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Jackie Chan Supports Young Leukemia Sufferer

Action star Jackie Chan is using Facebook to appeal to fans to help save a little girl with leukemia.

“I recently found out about an 8 year-old girl who has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant,” he wrote on his official Facebook page. “I recorded a public service announcement to appeal for your help and now I am asking all my Facebook fans to do what they can. Please help!”

8-year-old Natalie was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) in the Fall of 2008. After five rounds of chemotherapy she went into remission and re-enrolled in school this past Fall. But her leukemia returned in January 2010 and now her only chance for survival is to find a lifesaving bone marrow donor as soon as possible.

The Who Launches Charity Tees For A New Generation

The Who just rocked out for over 100 million viewers during the Super Bowl halftime show, but it’s their new line of limited edition T-shirt’s from the good people at the Hard Rock Café that begs attention, as all sales benefit City of Hope, the charity working to conquer life-threatening diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.

The limited edition “Who Signature Series: Edition XXVII” T-shirts, designed by band members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, are priced at just $26, with fifteen percent of each sale going to City of Hope. The tee design is pure ‘Who’ and depicts Townshend’s classic “windmill” guitar technique against a somewhat tattered Union Jack. The front of the shirt also features a Who backstage pass while the phrase “That’s Who” is printed on the back of the tee.

The Who’s relationship with the Hard Rock is more than meets the eye. According the ‘legend,’ over 30-years ago, Townshend was in the original Hard Rock Café in London when he noticed Eric Clapton's guitar hanging on the wall. Clapton had asked that his guitar be hung to mark his favorite barstool and the club’s management obliged him. Then one week later the Hard Rock Café received a package from Townshend. Inside was one of his own guitars along with a note stating, “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.” It was this impulsive move by Townshend that led to the Hard Rock’s line of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia.

Depeche Mode Keeps The Time For Charity Auction

Depeche Mode and Swiss watchmakers Hublot have teamed up to produce a unique auction fundraiser to benefit Britain’s Teenage Cancer Trust.

Bidding for this online only auction is currently underway, and concludes on February 24, 2010. All of the proceeds will be presented to the Teenage Cancer Trust on February 26, 2010 at the concert of Depeche Mode’s “Sounds of the Universe” tour in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Hublot has created one dozen custom watches for the auction, each one featuring the artwork of one of Depeche Mode’s iconic twelve studio albums as its watch face. These one of a kind creations are beautifully presented in individually themed presentation boxes containing not only the wristwatch, but also a deluxe version of the album, a USB Key containing a digital edition of the album and documentary about making the album, an original album artwork print and a framed gold CD, as well as a photograph signed by all members of the group who contributed to the album, including Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder, two of the band’s original members.

Depeche Mode will be playing at the Royal Albert Hall for their first time on February 17, 2010 will open the Teenage Cancer Trust’s tenth series of performances, which will also be part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s 20th anniversary celebration marking the anniversary of the UK’s first Teenage Cancer Unit.

Established in 1997, Teenage Cancer Trust is dedicated to the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer, leukemia, Hodgkin’s and related diseases by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. The teenage patients have been involved in the concept and creation of the ten units that the charity has built to date. They are designed to be places where patients, friends and family can all feel comfortable visiting. The medical facilities on the units are colorful and vibrant, and are equipped with televisions, computers and game consoles.

Stars To Bowl In Their PJs For Charity

Actor Jason Gedrick will host a charity bowling night with a difference on Saturday, February 13.

In association with the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund, celebrities such as Daniel and Stephen Baldwin, Joe Mantegna, Gilles Marini and others will converge on the Pinz Bowling Center on Ventura Blvd for a night of “Pajama bowling”.

Wearing nothing but their PJ’s and nighties, the guests will spend the night bowling after dark to benefit charity. The Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund was set up by the Baldwin brothers after their mother after she underwent a double mastectomy in 1996. The 70-year-old turned her tragedy into courage to assist other women who are affected by breast cancer, and the Fund, which has raised over $2.6 million since its inception, donates money to researchers investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Both William Baldwin and his brother, Alec Baldwin, sit on the board of the Fund.

Lauren Conrad Has A Heart For Charity

The Hills star Lauren Conrad recently helped launch a charity bracelet to raise money for a charity close to her heart.

The star was in New York on February 2 to help launch the Have A Heart bracelet, a “goldtone bracelet that features Lauren’s signature faves hearts on one side and the m.powerment by mark emblem on the other.” Proceeds from the bracelet will go to m.powerment by mark, the charitable arm of Mark Cosmetics – partnered with the Avon Foundation – that helps educate young women about the potential for abusive relationships.

Rihanna Wants To Refresh Bone Marrow Charity

Rihanna is the latest star to take part in Pepsi’s Refresh Project, and has appealed to fans to help win funding for charity.

Pepsi has asked people to cast their votes at www.refresheverything.com for the refreshing consumer-generated ideas that they believe will make a positive impact on their communities. This is the first of eleven opportunities for the public to win grants from $5,000 up to $250,000 throughout the year.

Rihanna is asking fans to vote for DKMS – an organization that connects bone marrow and stem cell donors with patients in need – following the death of 6-year-old Jasmina Anema last month. The singer had led a campaign to help find a bone marrow donor for the little girl, and was heartbroken by her passing.

“She was a very free, fun spirited little girl, full of energy, always happy, always energetic,” said Rihanna. "I always remember she wouldn’t sit still. She was always running around, always had a smile on her face.
 
“If we win [the funding], this would really help us recruit 4,000 individual donors.”

The Pepsi Refresh Project, a groundbreaking effort to foster innovation in social good, will award more than $20 million this year to fund great ideas that refresh the world. Joining the campaign are actors Demi Moore and Kevin Bacon, who have generated their own ideas for Pepsi Refresh and are competing for support in the Pepsi Refresh Celebrity Challenge.

Jim Parsons Makes A Big Bang For Charity

Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons has launched a special video for Stand Up To Cancer.

The Up2 You + Me Video was directed by Jesse Selwyn with the song written and performed by Zach Selwyn. The new humorous call to action video captures Parsons at his comedic best playing 30 characters, requiring 30 costume changes, which were all in keeping with the funny song lyrics. People will also be able to see the video on StandUp2Cancer.org.  

“In writing the song, we wanted to communicate a serious and important message in a fun and light-hearted way,” said songwriter Zach Selwyn. “It was a thrill to work with Jim who weathered through 30 costume changes in a 12 hour day and never lost his spirit. We hope our fellow gamers will be inspired to join SU2C in the fight against cancer.”

  The campaign also encourages users to support SU2C by texting, calling and visiting the organization’s website to donate. In addition, Xbox LIVE members are able to download the SU2C theme and gamer pics to show their support for the cause through the Xbox LIVE community.   

The Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) movement raises funds to hasten the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives. SU2C is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and was founded by a group of media, entertainment and philanthropic leaders whose lives have been affected by cancer in significant ways.  

Founded in May, 2008, Stand Up To Cancer has raised more than $100 million for cancer research.

Katie Couric, Julianne Moore, Julianna Margulies Talk Charity

Ladies Home Journal has profiled 3 celebrity women who work hard for charity – Katie Couric, Julianne Moore and Julianna Margulies.

Katie Couric is a co-founder of the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, and is also involved with Stand Up To Cancer.

“It would be criminal not to take advantage of these professional gifts I’ve been given,” she tells the magazine. "I have a bully pulpit from which to communicate a message and educate people. Helping to raise awareness and research dollars is my way of putting my fingerprint on the world in a positive way.

“Getting involved in the fight against colon cancer offset the helplessness I felt. My daughters got involved, too. They would have bake sales or lemonade stands and all the money would go to colon cancer research. Now whenever I see a lemonade stand, I want to know if the proceeds are going to a charity. I guilt the kids out.”

Julianna Margulies is involved with Project A.L.S., and speaks of her passion for the charity.

“As a celebrity, it’s my responsibility to give a voice to a cause. That’s what I can do to help. But when I meet the doctors who’ve been working with Project A.L.S. and learn about their research, I feel so inadequate. They’re the ones who are doing amazing things.”

Julianne Moore is an advocate for Save the Children, and is currently spearheading her annual Valentine’s Day card campaign for the charity.

“Because of this ridiculous celebrity I have, I’m able to draw attention to a cause I care about,” says Moore. “Children cannot help themselves. They need our help, and that’s what this is about.”

Stars Line Up To Celebrate Teenage Cancer Trust Concerts

The Teenage Cancer Trust is about to celebrate 10 years of music and comedy concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London by unleashing an outstanding lineup of performances at the iconic venue throughout March.

Kicking off the event will be Them Crooked Vultures – the supergroup featuring Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme. The band will hit the stage on March 22, followed the next night by a comedy performance from Jimmy Carr and friends.

Wednesday, March 24, will see a reformed Suede taking the spotlight. The following two nights will feature former Oasis superstar Noel Gallagher performing his only two solo shows of 2010.

“Ten years ago I got a call from Roger [Daltrey] asking me to join him for the first ever concert for the charity,” said Gallagher. “Since then I’ve been honoured to support this amazing charity. I’ve had some of the best nights I’ve ever had on a UK stage.”

The Arctic Monkeys will perform on March 27, followed by JLS on March 28 and The Specials on March 29. The weeklong series of concerts will come to an end on March 30 with a special performance by The Who.

International superstar and Grammy Award-winning pop diva Shakira will team up with 12-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and actress Alicia Keys for a one-of-a-kind performance headlining the 2010 NBA All-Star Game Halftime Show on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, to benefit NBA Cares.

Shakira will dazzle the crowd performing her current single “Give It Up To Me” in addition to the title single “She Wolf” off of her current hit album She Wolf. Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Usher will perform his high-energy single “More” during the introductions of the 2010 NBA All-Stars. On Saturday, February 6th, Sin City’s premier property will host a $1,000 + $70 straddle no-limit hold’em charity poker tournament benefiting the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Nicole Richie And Joel Madden Launch Charity Fun With 7-Eleven

Many cups will runneth over as 7-Eleven, Inc. aims to donate more than $2 million to charities via “7-Eleven Coffee Cup With A Cause” in 2010.

Because nurturing good community relations is important to 7-Eleven and its franchisees, the company is launching a charity-focused coffee campaign this month. Throughout 2010, 7-Eleven will introduce limited-edition 20-oz coffee cups designed by entertainment and sports celebrities to be sold in 7-Eleven stores nationwide. Proceeds from cups sold will benefit the featured celebrity’s charity of choice. Cups can be filled with any 7-Eleven hot beverage including coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

“Cup With A Cause is one of our most exciting programs,” says Rita Bargerhuff, 7-Eleven’s chief marketing officer. “We’ve turned our coffee cups into canvasses, and celebrities are creating artwork for our program that allows customers to directly support charities and causes that make dramatic changes to so many people’s lives.”

Nicole Richie, Joel Madden and Benji Madden will kick off the program. Proceeds from their cup, featuring a custom-designed drawing representing their cause, will support The Richie Madden Children's Foundation. The stars will join 7-Eleven representatives in early February, at a Beyond Shelter Neighborhood Resource Center in South Central Los Angeles to formally announce their partnership and cut the ribbon for the facility’s new playground for young children.

“7-Eleven’s ‘Coffee Cup with a Cause’ program and its donation to The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation will help us provide a wonderful and safe atmosphere for children and their families at the new Beyond Shelter playground,” said Nicole Richie.

While 7-Eleven is providing a guaranteed $250,000 minimum donation to each charity, donations could reach as high as $300,000, depending on the number of cups sold. Consumers can drive donations through the purchase of these celebrity-designed cups.
