Win A Water Filtration Device To Celebrate Charity Climb

In January, Jessica Biel and Isabel Lucas will be among a group of celebrities as they set off to climb the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, to raise awareness of the importance of safe drinking water. And to celebrate, Look To The Stars will give away a PUR water filtration system to one lucky reader.

The stars will be joined by Ethiopian singer Kenna and rapper Lupe Fiasco, and the Summit On The Summit expedition will raise money and awareness for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and PlayPumps International.

“My dad almost died as a child from waterborne diseases in Ethiopia, and he had talked to me about digging a well there, and I thought, ’I have too many friends who would be concerned with the subject of clean water,” said Kenna. “Maybe I can help out.’”

And it is a challenge Lupe Fiasco is looking forward to: “I’m an adventure junkie. Part of the motivation is beating Kenna to the top. Sabotaging his tent, taking the lining out of his coat, lacing it with ants or something like that. [The water crisis in Africa] is a universal problem; it’s all mounting to the point where eventually there’s no clean water left. If I did a song, it would be jam-packed with so much information, it would almost be like we fit the substance of an entire interview in three and a half minutes.”

Dr. Greg Allgood, Founder and Director of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW), will be joining the climb as the water issues expert, educating the climbers on the global water crisis and what is being done to help. Taylor Swift Surprises Children In Need

Taylor Swift was a surprise guest at this year’s BBC Children in Need extravaganza in London on Friday night – an event that raised a massive £20,309,747 for charity.

Hosted by Terry Wogan, Tess Daly and Alesha Dixon, the seven hour show featured actors from some of Britain’s favorite shows – including Doctor Who, The Bill and the One Show.

“Another fantastic fundraising effort – we didn’t get quite to £21m but we got pretty close,” said Wogan, referring to last year’s total. “By the time we give you the full total in a couple of months’ time, I bet it’s got to be pretty close to what we made last year.”

The highlight of the show – which featured performances by acts such as Peter André, Spandau Ballet, Westlife, JLS, Stereophonics and Annie Lennox – was the unveiling of comedian Peter Kay’s charity single for the charity. Featuring a medley of songs from The Beatles, Take That, The Jackson 5 and many more, the video consists of over 100 characters from Britain’s television past.

Taylor Swift jetted in for her performance at the show – and donated over US$20,000 to the charity, which provides practical and lasting support to thousands of youngsters aged 18 and under, including those who have experienced homelessness, neglect, abuse or poverty, and those who’ve encountered serious illnesses, disabilities, psychological disorders or addictions.

Other highlights of the show included a preview of the Doctor Who Christmas Special; actors from British soap Hollyoaks performing a tribute to Queen; Terry Wogan in perion costume for Lark Rise to Candleford; and the Dragons’ Den team helping to renovate a community centre in London.

“This year we surpassed all expectations with the amount raised and I am in awe that in these tough times, the British public has shown such tremendous support and generosity,” said Wogan. “I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved and for the extraordinary lengths the country has gone to help raise money for disadvantaged children.”

Paris Hilton Gives Sick Kids A Day To Remember

It was an afternoon full of laughter and tears when the Hilton family opened their Bel Air estate to children from the Starlight Children’s Foundation during the weekend.

Paris, Nikki and Kathy welcomed the kids suffering from serious diseases and gave them a day to remember as they entertained the kids with games of Duck Duck Goose, Simon Says and bubble blowing.

The event was organized by famous Forever 21 chain of clothing stores, which is currently adding 90,000 square feet Forever 21 in Manhattan, in Times Square, in the space formerly occupied by the Virgin Megastore.

Forever 21 designer Madeline Beth will collaborate with Paris, Nicky, and their mother Kathy Hilton for the design of three new t-shirts that will be featured at Forever 21 stores worldwide. Paris and Nicky Hilton painted the designs for the t-shirts themselves. All proceeds from the sales of these shirts will be contributed to the Starlight Foundation.

The Starlight Foundation offers a comprehensive menu of outpatient, hospital-based and Web offerings that enable them to provide ongoing support for children and families — from diagnosis through the entire course of medical treatment. The Starlight Foundation prides itself on restoring family’s spirits while researchers look for cures and doctors work to restore a child’s health.

Also in attendance was owner of the famed Anastasia Salon, Anastasia Soare doing makeovers, Chase Krouse of Chris McMillan Salon, and last but not least Forever 21 collaborative accessories designer, Madeline Beth.

Madeline Beth has been in manufacturing for over 20 years; specializing in rhinestone accessories such as handbags, compacts, other purse accessories such as lipstick holders, compact mirrors, belt buckles, and fashion jewelry. She works with Forever 21 to design trendsetting accessories that have been innovative in the fashion industry.

Wyclef Jean And Bono Receive ‘Ripple Of Hope Award’

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer Wyclef Jean, and (RED) founder/U2 front man Bono, were honored this week at a ceremony thrown by The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, where each were awarded the ‘Ripple of Hope’ Award.

“As champions of justice, Bono and Wyclef have brought the national spotlight to human rights violations, empowered local activists, and transformed the lives of millions of people living in poverty from Port-Au-Prince to Darfur,” said Kerry Kennedy, founder of the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. “Their efforts evoke the spirit of my father and we are honored to recognize them.”

Jean was honored for his work to inspire change in his native country of Haiti through his Yéle Haiti Foundation.

“It is an honor to receive this award for so many reasons,” said Jean, who was also the evening’s musical performer. “The Kennedy Family and Robert F. Kennedy have represented and fought for the rights of people around the world, and have paid the ultimate sacrifice for it. I am humbled by their work, and use it as an example in the work I continue to do in Haiti, the United States, Africa and around the globe. I look forward to working closely with Kerry Kennedy and the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights in Haiti as a part of our Yéle Center.”

Bono was recognized for his efforts in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particular in Africa with the ONE Campaign, DATA and (Product) RED.

“Though we’re not usually that partial to Royals, growing up in Ireland in the 70s, the Kennedy family felt like an Irish royal family. Bobby Kennedy was a super-hero, an Irish scrapper who didn’t see any contradiction between hard-headed pragmatism and an idealism that challenged all of us to change the world. That’s why the Ripple of Hope award means so much. RFK was the blue print for our activism in the ONE campaign,” Bono said. “The image of Bobby that will forever be in my mind is of a man with his sleeves rolled up, hard at work and showing a hint of muscle. His life is an enduring challenge to all of us to do more, get beyond ourselves and send out our own ripples of hope to the world.”

The event was emceed by actor Peter Gallagher, and guests included: Matthew Modine, Matt McCoy, Joey Pantoliano, Gloria Reuben, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Governor Jon Corzine, Harry Belafonte, Martha Stewart, Bill O’Reilly, Ana Ortiz, Aasif Mandvi, Liya Kebede, Earl Graves, Terry Kinney, Rebecca Minkoff, Charles Nolan, Richard Plepler, Tom Freston and Orin Kramer.

The evening ended on a high note as Bono joined Wyclef on stage for a rendition of “Redemption Song,” after which Wyclef performed “Carnival” and brought the entire crowd of over 800 people – including Ethel Kennedy – to their feet singing and dancing.

Lebron James Donates to ONEXONE

On the season finale of the HBO hit show ‘Entourage’, NBA star LeBron James appeared as himself alongside Matt Damon as they hounded Vinnie (played by Adrian Grenier) to donate to Damon’s ONEXONE Foundation. During the last few minutes of the show, LeBron told Vinnie that he donated “$1 million” to the foundation.

But did he really?

Now, after months of speculation, LeBron James has confirmed that he did, in fact, donate one million to ONEXONE. When asked if the donation he mentioned on Entourage “was real,” LeBron said “Of course it’s real.”

Peter Andre Grants A Special Charity Wish

A very special girl had a wish granted by her hero recently when she met Peter André in London.

Five-year-old Jessica from the UK suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and finds solace in Peter’s music and TV shows. So it was a huge treat when the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the UK whisked her and her family to London, put them up in luxury accommodation, gave them transfers via pink Limousine to where Andre is filming his new reality show.

“Jessica is a lovely little girl and she just has to keep smiling for her mum and dad,” said the star after their meeting. “I am so pleased to have met her today, she is a very brave little girl.”

“This has been the best day ever for Jessica, she loves Peter and this day will stay with us forever – thank you so much,” said Jessica’s mother.

Arsenal Players Get Cute And Fluffy For Charity

Top Arsenal players Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Andrey Arshavin and Bacary Sagna dressed up in furry animal costumes to raise money for sick children this week.

They dressed up as a lion, rabbit, shark and an owl to walk the streets and fundraise for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH).

Club manager Arsene Wenger said, “The team and I have met some patients from Great Ormond Street Hospital on several occasions…and we’re all struck by the strength and courage they show in fighting their illnesses. We understand the importance of helping to improve the facilities at the hospital and we’re encouraging all Arsenal fans to help in whatever way we can.”

The players each donated a day’s wages to the team’s “Be a Gooner. Be a Giver” campaign. They hope to raise 500,000 Euros (US$740,000) toward a lung function unit for children who have difficulty breathing or sleeping.

Rock Stars Sign Guitar Amps For Charity

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page joined a host of rock gods in signing a pair of Monitor Audio loudspeakers to be auctioned for charity.

The pair of Gold GS20’s were also autographed by Iggy Pop, Slash, Anvil, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Brian May and Paul Rodgers from Queen among many others.

The major players of the rock music industry all gathered together at the Park Lane Hotel in London to celebrate the winners of the Marshall Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards 2009. 

The Monitor Audio speakers will now be auctioned to the public via text messaging, with all proceeds being donated to ChildLine – the 24-hour helpline that aids over 500,000 children a year. Bidders simply need to register their lowest unique bid.

Monitor Audio’s Marketing Manager, Michael Johnson, is clearly delighted with the response the project has had from some of rock music’s great personalities, “Once again the event was fantastic and we are especially grateful that some of the evening’s big winners joined with us to help and raise a great deal of money for a very worthwhile charity.”

Neil Patrick Harris To Be Honored By The Trevor Project

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris is to be honored by The Trevor Project, the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

Along with Harris, AT&T Inc. will be honored at Cracked Xmas 12, which takes place on December 6 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. Cracked Xmas is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser. It brings top entertainers together to support the organization’s programs.

Harris has become a compelling example for LGBTQ youth. He will be given the Trevor Life Award, which annually honors an individual who is an inspiration to LGBTQ youth through example, support, volunteerism, and/or occupation.

Harris said, “For many years, I have been a passionate and enthusiastic supporter of The Trevor Project’s lifesaving work, and I’m deeply honored to be recognized by an organization which has such a vital mission. Everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should be able to live their lives proudly as exactly who they are. I’m hopeful that in accepting this award, and in helping to build further awareness of the Trevor Project’s resources, I can in some small way make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ youth.”

Look To The Stars’ UK Correspondent Richard Barker was lucky enough to attend the Variety Club’s 57th Annual Showbiz Awards and filed this exclusive report and photos.

I was delighted to spend some time with A-list celebrities from music, film, theatre and television on the Red Carpet. The event was in aid of one of UK’s longest running children’s charities, The Variety Club, as it celebrated its Diamond Jubilee.

London saw some of the brightest stars from the showbiz world light up London’s West End as they congregated on the Red Carpet at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London W1 to show their support for one of UK’s longest running charities dedicated to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people – The Variety Club – and to honour the most talented individuals from the world of entertainment at The Variety Club’s 57th Annual Showbiz Awards 2009. Don’t worry readers if you are based in England but weren’t there on the night – you’ll get a chance to watch the glitz, the glamour and hear the gossip on FIVE on Sunday 22nd November 2009 at 3.35pm.

The evening’s star-studded event commenced with an array of international A-list celebrities, industry stalwarts and leading luminaries from the worlds of film, television, comedy, theatre, popular music and classical music gracing the Red Carpet. Lucy Liu And Rebecca Mader To Light UNICEF Snowflakes

UNICEF will light up both New York and Beverly Hills this weekend with the help of some celebrity friends.

Lucy Liu will light the UNICEF Snowflake at a special ceremony on Thursday, November 19, in front of the Louis Vuitton Fifth Avenue store in New York, followed by a similar event at the intersection of Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills featuring Rebecca Mader on Saturday, November 21.

“The UNICEF Snowflake is a special symbol for the world’s most vulnerable children,” said Caryl Stern, President and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “Every day 24,000 children die of preventable causes. These iconic snowflakes—at 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York and on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills—hang as a reminder of UNICEF’s commitment to reach a day when zero children die from preventable causes.”

Mader will flip the switch to illuminate the brilliant UNICEF Snowflake on Rodeo Drive that will soar over the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel. The Beverly Hills Snowflake contains 12,000 crystals, is 17 feet wide and over 14 feet tall, weighs 1,600 pounds and is illuminated by 125 steady-burning and 300 high-powered flashing LED lights. The evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display across the sky above the hotel, which is home to the west coast UNICEF Snowflake.

“The UNICEF Snowflake is the centerpiece of an ambitious program to raise funds for UNICEF’s programs providing immunization, education, health care, nutrition, clean water and sanitation for children in need,” said actress and UNICEF supporter Rebecca Mader. “I am honored to participate in the Beverly Hills lighting ceremony by illuminating the UNICEF Snowflake and helping spread its message of hope, peace and compassion for children worldwide.”

In New York, Lucy Liu is also excited about the event.

“As a native New Yorker I always look forward to seeing the UNICEF Snowflake light up Fifth Avenue,” said actress and UNICEF Ambassador Lucy Liu. “It reminds me that every day, there are 24,000 children worldwide dying from preventable causes. I am especially proud to support UNICEF and their commitment to change that number to zero.”

Appointed a UNICEF Ambassador in 2004, Liu has used her influence as a force for the survival, protection and development of children worldwide. She has traveled to Lesotho, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Peru to witness UNICEF’s lifesaving work and to advocate on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable children.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Snowflake. Donated by the Stonbely Family Foundation in 2002, the UNICEF Snowflake has become an iconic fixture in New York City during the holiday season, hanging high above the intersection of 5th Avenue and 57th Street. It was handcrafted by German lighting designer Ingo Maurer and is adorned with 16,000 Baccarat crystal prisms. At 23 feet in diameter, over 28 feet in height and weighing 3,300 pounds, the UNICEF Snowflake is the largest outdoor chandelier of its kind. The UNICEF Snowflake ceremony is open to the public and will be illuminated for the entire holiday season.

The evening’s celebration, which will be telecast live to the Spectacolor CNN billboard in Times Square, will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a festive recital by Broadway Kids Care, a group of children from current and past Broadway shows who come together to participate in a variety of charitable works. Following their performance, Lucy Liu, Caryl Stern and Daniel Lalonde, President and CEO of Louis Vuitton North America, will take the stage and flip the switch to illuminate the UNICEF Snowflake. Immediately following the ceremony Louis Vuitton, proud sponsor of the UNICEF Snowflake lighting this year, will host a reception to celebrate the lighting in their flagship store on 5th Avenue.

En Concert chronicles the “special visual and musical moments from Jack Johnson’s 2008 Sleep Through The Static world tour” and features Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. 100% of the 2008 tour profits and the proceeds from the live album will go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation – which supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii – and the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, which matches fans’ donations to the local charities featured in the Village Green area at each of his shows (up to $2500 per concert).

To celebrate the release of the album, Johnson played an intimate acoustic set in front of a hugely enthusiastic audience at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu last week, with proceeds going to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

Eva Longoria Honored For Philanthropy

Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria has been honored as Philanthropist of the Year by The Hollywood Reporter.

The actress “was chosen for her relentless dedication to giving back to her community and serving others as well as for her long-standing commitment to Latino causes.”

“I’ve never met a more conscientious and socially aware young, energetic talent,” said THR publisher Eric Mika. “Eva’s efforts on behalf of the causes near and dear to her are Herculean. She pours her free time and energy into raising millions of dollars for charitable missions that make a difference in the Latino community and other humanitarian organizations.”

Longoria founded Eva’s Heroes to help developmentally disadvantaged children and has been the National Spokesperson for Padres Contra el Cancer since 2005.

Having grown up with an intellectually disabled sister, Longoria considers her sister her hero. “She has given me so much inspiration and hope to face everyday with the strength and courage she has had her whole life. She has never seen herself with a disability and only sees the good in everyone and everything.”

Actor Matthew McConaughey is auctioning off his son’s stroller. Now, this may seem a bit odd since baby number two is on the way, but he’s doing it for a good cause as proceeds benefit the JK Livin Foundation.

Young Levi’s ‘Baby Jogger Performance’ stroller is listed as being “gently used” by father and son. The ‘Model S-20 – Navy/Metallic Silver’ stroller can be viewed and bid on here. As of this printing, the current high bid is only $197.50, which is a great deal considering it retails for about $350.00.

All proceeds benefit the j.k. livin foundation, a non-profit foundation committed to the health and well being of the youth in our communities.

Victoria Beckham Teaches Son To Save The Children

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and 10-year old son Brooklyn took a two-day trip to Clay County, Kentucky, on behalf of Save the Children this week.

Beckham is speaking out about childhood poverty after visiting some of the poorest children in America. She said the visit showed her the need for all children to have an equal start in life.

Clay County has a mean income of just under $20,000 per household, which makes it the poorest area in America.

Beckham taught kids how to play football, read books to them, and passed out free Adidas sneakers and backpacks. She also went to several homes to talk to parents about nutrition and education.

Brooklyn learned how important it is for his generation to help. Beckham said, “I’m pleased Brooklyn is learning that, by helping and joining other children, he can play a role in making his generation the greatest yet.”

Children In Need Benefit From Charity Singles

British comedian Peter Kay will unveil a new single to raise money for the BBC’s Children in Need charity at the organization’s annual TV extravaganza on November 20.

Details of the single are being closely guarded, but the charity is promising over 100 faces from Britain and America will be involved in the video.

Also available from HMV and download and benefiting Children In Need is “All You Need is Love” – a reworking of the Beatles classic, recorded at the famous Abbey Road studios, featuring the talents of Terry Wogan, Bill Wyman, Brian May, Bryan Ferry, Sharon Corr, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, Paloma Faith, Lee Mead, Hayley Westenra and more.

British store Selfridges hosted a celebrity garage sale for charity in London during the weekend.

Items were donated by Gwyneth Paltrow, Little Britain star David Walliams, TV presenter Denise van Outen, Lily Allen, Davina McCall, members of the All Saints, Jodie Kidd and many more, with proceeds going to Mothers4Children, a charity dedicated to harnessing the compassion of women to create a powerful and enduring platform for change. Established by model and actress Lisa B, the foundation has trustees such as Yasmin Le Bon, Trinny Woodall, Anya Hindmarch and Natalie Massenet, and raises money for charities such as Kids Company and the Foundation for the Relief of Disabled Orphans.

Thousands of people turned out for the event, which featured 45 stalls – many of which were managed by the stars themselves.

Jackie Chan Holds Dialogues For Peace

Action star Jackie Chan continued his current charity mission in Asia by speaking at schools in Cambodia last week.

Chan is in the country as part of the Bridges: Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace series of talks sponsored by the International Peace Foundation. As part of the event, he talked with students at the International School of Phnom Penh and the University of Cambodia.

Boy George And Marcus Bonfanti To Headline Charity Event In London

Boy George is to be a special guest at an event being held to benefit Children with AIDS.

With an extraordinary 2009 coming to an end that has seen the recession making headlines everyday, it has turned the normally difficult task of fundraising for charities into an even greater challenge. However Children With AIDS Charity (CWAC) decided that this just meant they needed to get creative and find new ways of fundraising with the help of Wired Events.

AIDS is one of the most supported causes around the world but the knowledge that it exists within the UK amongst families and children seems relatively unknown. CWAC aims to eradicate the prejudice facing these children and families living with HIV & AIDS and helps them on a daily basis with the financial concerns, stigmatism and emotional suffering which many of them have to endure behind closed doors. It was therefore decided that an event which could offer a voice to those children and raise the profile of CWAC’s work to a new younger generation which would be important for the future of the charity and its essential work. So Singing for Silence was created.

The event is on Tuesday 1st December, to coincide with World AIDS Day, and will take place at the 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, London. The night will play host to a range of well-known and up-and-coming artists who all have a strong acoustic vibe to their music. CWAC are excited to announce that Sarah Champion from Absolute Radio will be hosting the night which will include: Jamie Hartman, from Ben’s Brother, who will be playing a solo acoustic set; and the legendary Boy George, who is will be performing a few songs accompanied by John Themis on acoustic guitar. With the night rounded up by an exciting talent with a folk/rock/blues feel – Marcus Bonfanti & band.

Take That And Friends To Rock Children In Need Tonight

Thousands of charity-minded people are expected to pack the Royal Albert Hall in London tonight, November 12, for a huge star-studded concert organized by Gary Barlow and Take That.

Every year, BBC Children in Need creates magic moments that raise huge amounts of money for disadvantaged children, and this year the UK’s finest musicians hope to help raise more than ever with a spectacular show at the Royal Albert Hall.

The star-studded bill includes; Lily Allen, Paul McCartney, Dizzee Rascal, Dame Shirley Bassey, Leona Lewis, Snow Patrol, Cheryl Cole from Girls Aloud, Katherine Jenkins and Muse. And of course Gary will also perform on the night with his Take That partners, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, as they again show their unwavering support of the charity – there’s even rumors of a possible reunion with Robbie Williams.

“It’s fantastic to be able to kick off BBC Children in Need 2009 in such a special way,” said Gary Barlow, “I’ve always wanted to do something like this and I can promise a night to remember, a night that will, I hope, play a small part in changing the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK.”

Radio 1’s Chris Moyles will host the event and will be joined on stage by Peter Kay, Fearne Cotton, James Corden and the legend that is Sir Terry Wogan, who will help introduce the stars and remind us of the work that BBC Children in Need carries out in the UK.

The show will be broadcast on BBC One in the weekend before the main BBC Children in Need Appeal on November 20 and coverage of the concert will be repeated on BBC Three, Wednesday 18 November at 9.00pm with highlights, presented by Kate Thornton, on Radio 2, Thursday 19 November at 8.00pm.

Viewers and listeners to the show will be invited to donate to help raise even more money.

Hard Rock Serves Up John Lennon For Charity

Last week, Look To The Stars brought you the news that Yoko Ono had donated John Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance to charity. Now we can reveal that she has also donated another of the singer’s songs to another charity campaign.

The World Hunger Year (WHY), along with Hard Rock Cafe, has released Serve4, the latest in their series of albums designed to fight hunger around the world. Yoko Ono has donated John Lennon’s Gimme Some Truth to the album.

“This is a beautiful step towards world peace,” she said. “By imagining there’s no hunger, like what John sang in his song, we express our strong desire to bring a world in which children will never again suffer from hunger or poverty. Let’s come together and help spread this message around the world. John would have loved the fact that so many illustrious and good meaning partners and organizations have stood up to make this effort together.”

It is the second time Ono has donated one of Lennon’s songs to Hard Rock’s Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign and Serve CDs.

100% of net proceeds from Hard Rock’s campaign will directly benefit WHY and its grassroots partners around the globe, that have developed ways to feed children worldwide who are victims of poverty and also teach them farming and entrepreneurial skills for the future. Proceeds will be donated directly to WHY to benefit local charities, including the Common Ground Foundation and Pathfinder Academy both located in Kenya, the Pattanarak Foundation located in Thailand, City of Joy located in India, the Yéle Haiti Foundation located in Haiti, Hope North located in Uganda, Roots and Shoots located in China, Project Bona Fide located in Nicaragua and Sentabale located in Lesotho.

LTTS Exclusive - Miss World Finalists Talk Charity

When you are asked to attend a Press Call with the Miss World finalists at the last-minute you find the time, energy and fastest train in order to attend. I have never seen so many beautiful and inspiring women in one ballroom, and in one hour I did my best to speak with and photograph the finalists.

I spoke to Miss Wales Lucy Whitehouse. She told me that her ambition is to follow in Helen Morgan’s footsteps. Helen was a former Welsh winner. Lucy works as a nurse and she said that she wanted to encourage people to care for each other. I have to admit that I was smitten.

Miss United States Lisa-Marie KOHRS said that she was honoured to have been selected. She said that the Miss World slogan ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ summed up her feelings and that the contestants comprised of beautiful, athletic and inspirational women. Lisa finds her inspiration in the form of Julia Morley, Miss World Chairman. The brand now has franchises in over 120 countries and fundraising has topped £150 million.

One cause close to the heart of Miss United States is Agua Para La Vida. Since 1987 this organization has been helping rural Nicaraguan communities build their own drinking water and sanitation systems. As of this year, they have helped bring clean water to over 14,000 people. Lisa intends to raise awareness about this very worthy cause.

Finally our new Miss England Katrina Hodge is intending to support numerous charities including those which support British troops. As a soldier those causes are obviously close to her heart. I’m sure that she will make a good ambassador for those heroic men and women.

Once the press left the building, the contestants prepared to host the Miss World Charity Dinner in aid of Variety International Children’s Fund. The event featured an auction of the contestants’ own gifts and other spectacular prizes, including first-class flights and two incredible tickets to the Final of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in Johannesburg. A total of £250,000 was raised for the Variety International Children’s Fund.

This marks the beginning of a month-long festival, as the contestants fly to South Africa. The tour starts and finishes in Johannesburg where the Miss World 2009 Final will be held on 12/12/2009.

Rainn Wilson Steps Out Of The Office For Charity

When he’s not on set of NBC’s “The Office,” Rainn Wilson spends some of his time supporting the Mona Foundation.

The Kirkland-based charity helps women and children around the world. The foundation is currently working in 15 different countries.

He said, “It finds schools and orphanages and institutes that are already working, that are founded on a grassroots level in these different countries whether it’s the Amazon, Panama, Tanzania or Haiti, then provides the financial support to grow in an organic way.”

Wilson recently returned from a trip to Haiti, where the charity provides financial support to a school and its students outside Port au Prince.

Jackie Chan Takes Part In Operation Smile Surgery

Last week brought news of Jackie Chan’s participation in a charity event in Vietnam for Operation Smile. Now we’ve learned that he assisted in an actual Operation Smile surgery at the Vietnam-Cuba Hospital in Hanoi.

The star is an ambassador for Operation Smile, an organization that helps children with cleft palates and other deformities.

Chan spent an hour helping with the surgery, and said he felt as tired as though he’d done martial arts for an extended period of time. The surgery was carried out on Quy Thien Tran, a 6-month-old boy with a primary cleft. Vietnamese singer My Tam and model Hi Anh also observed the surgery.

According to an Operation Smile spokesperson: “When the surgery was over, team members said there was barely a dry eye in the house as Chan carried the child back to his mother. Chan said the next morning that he couldn’t sleep and was awake until 3 a.m. emailing his friends about how much the experience of helping change a child’s life had impacted him.”

The star also talked about his fear of needles, and he had to turn away every time an injection was given to the patient!

The star is currently visiting Asian countries on a mission of charity, and has been raising awareness of his Dragon’s Heart Charity in China and visiting Typhoon victims in Taiwan.

During the weekend, Chan visited the Singapore Tongji Hospital and became a Goodwill Ambassador. This week he heads to Thailand and Cambodia to be a keynote speaker at the International Peace Foundation’s “Bridges: Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace.”

Cystic Fibrosis Sufferer Meets Football Heroes

A young cystic fibrosis sufferer from the UK named Becks had one wish – to meet the England football team. His dream recently came true at a England training session that was held at the Arsenal training ground – thanks to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

After watching the manager put the team through their paces, Becks had the chance to meet the players – all of whom signed his shirt – including footballing legends David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Jon Terry.

Becks suffers from cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that lines the lungs and digestive system with a sticky mucus. Becks has to undergo twice-daily physiotherapy and nebulisers as well as taking a cocktail of pills with each meal. He also has to put up with long stints in hospital. Becks never complains and dreams of one day being a famous footballer.

Beck’s Mum Bonnie said, “We would like to thank Starlight so much! I have never seen him so excited.”

Starlight and the FA joined together to grant his special wish.
