Affleck Tops Charity Stars in Denver

Denver saw an outpouring of celebrity love during last week’s DNC, with Ben Affleck leading the philanthropic pack.

On the Tuesday night, Affleck took part in a poker tournament, along with Richard Dreyfus and Montel Williams, which ultimately raised over $60,000 for the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

“A lot of important organizations use this environment and the people who are here, celebrities, members of Congress, to try and raise money. This is not a Democratic or Republican group, this is a group serving our veterans,” Affleck said of the charity.

Wednesday morning, the Pearl Harbor star was down at a local food bank, the Food Bank of the Rockies, to participate in a repack event for America’s Second Harvest. Also on hand for the event were members of the Senate Hunger Caucus and members of the House – all there to see who could pack the most boxes of food in five minutes. Affleck, incidentally, won both the poker and the packing events.

He was joined by wife Jennifer Garner for a book reading at the Starz Green Room. Also set to attend were Charlize Theron, Daryl Hannah, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Josh Brolin, Kal Penn, Stuart Townsend and Hill Harper.

Jennifer Lopez spoke at a reception sponsored by the Jennifer Lopez Foundation in honor of Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children’s Defense Fund. Fran Drescher, Ashley Judd and Joy Bryant joined Lopez in honoring Edelman.

The Black Eyed Peas performed at the Fillmore Auditorium for the Creative Coalition, and Kanye West performed at a party benefitting the ONE Campaign. Forest Whitaker, Kal Penn and Jamie Foxx were in attendance at the latter.

Moby performed at a private party for DoSomething.org, and Willie Nelson sang out for the people of Darfur at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Jeans Engineered For Celebs On Auction

Anybody walking through Times Square may be surprised to find hundreds of jeans and shirts hanging like laundry from clotheslines above the streets. Don’t be too concerned… it’s all part of the Pair in the Square Celebrity Jeans Auction.

Matt Damon Returns For ONE X ONE

For the third year in a row, Matt Damon will host ONE X ONE’s annual charity benefit gala, where celebrities and activists will gather for an evening of musical performances, words from key speakers, fundraising and entertainment.

ONE X ONE’s Difference Awards will also be presented at the gala, recognizing individuals for their extraordinary efforts in fighting child poverty and suffering. One of last year’s honorees, Wyclef Jean, is returning this year as musical director and performer. Other entertainment will include John Legend and the African Children’s Choir, which is raising awareness of the needs of Africa’s orphans and destitute children.

A fairly young organization, ONE X ONE raises millions of dollars each year for projects within Canada and abroad for partners such as H2O Africa, the Yéle Haiti Foundation, Millennium Promise, War Child and Spread the Net to “directly impact children in need around the world – one by one.”

“There is an old biblical adage that says ‘You save one life, you save the universe,’” said Joelle Adler, ONE X ONE’s founder. “That should be our motto. We cannot look across the water and pretend it is not our responsibility because together we can change the world.”

The gala and concert will be held at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on September 8 and a second gala will take place at Exhibition Centre in San Francisco on October 23 honoring Carlos Santana.

Kyle Maclachlan To Front Women's Cancer PSA

Desperate Housewives star Kyle Maclachlan is to feature in a new cancer awareness advertisement.

The 49-year-old former Twin Peaks actor is to front a new public service announcement on behalf of the Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative urging women to seek early detection for ovarian cancer. His mother died of ovarian cancer in 1986, and MacLachlin wants to honor her memory by taking part in the campaign.

The Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative was established through $2 million of donations to the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Programs. The initiative aims to fast-track breakthrough treatments and tests at leading cancer institutions to beat ovarian cancer.

Earlier this year, Halle Berry was announced as the 2008 Ambassador for the initiative’s public service campaign, and has been appearing in magazine and newspaper advertisements for the program.

Bill Clinton Speaks At AIDS Conference

The eyes of the world are this week firmly fixed on AIDS 2008, the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.

The week-long conference officially opened on Sunday night, and last night (August 4) featured a rousing speech by former US president Bill Clinton.

“AIDS is a very big dragon. The mythological dragon was slain by Saint George, the original knight in shining armor, but this dragon must be slain by millions and millions of foot soldiers,” he told activists, leaders, and experts who gathered for the conference. “We know there is so much yet to be done: to expand prevention, treatment and care, to strengthen undeveloped health systems.”

The conference will draw around 25,000 participants from across the globe, including Oxfam Ambassador Annie Lennox, UN head Ban Ki-moon, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, Margaret Chan, and Keren Gonzalez – a 12-year-old from Honduras who has been actively involved in a number of HIV-related programs aimed at young people since the age of 9, including acting as editor for a magazine aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years affected directly and indirectly by HIV/AIDS.

AIDS 2008 will provide many opportunities for the presentation of important new scientific research and for productive, structured dialogue on the major challenges facing the global response to AIDS. The conference theme of Universal Action Now emphasizes the need for continued urgency in the worldwide response to HIV/AIDS, and for action on the part of all nations. International partners in the event include UNAIDS, the World Health Organization, the World Food Programme, the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations, the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS/International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS, the World YWCA, and the Asian Harm Reduction Network.

Bill Clinton flew to the conference from Africa, where he had been visiting projects funded by the Clinton Foundation to fight AIDS and malaria.

“Today 1.4 million people with AIDS are using treatments purchased by the Clinton Foundation,” he said. “Thanks to the efforts of our partners, they cost about 120 dollars a year.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Pushes For A Key To The Cure

The Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) have announced that Gwyneth Paltrow is their new Ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue’s 2008 Key To The Cure campaign.

Key to the Cure is a women’s cancer initiative founded in partnership with EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund, and 35-year-old Paltrow will appear in a series of advertisements wearing a limited edition T-shirt to raise awareness. The T-shirts – created by celebrated designer Karl Lagerfeld – will be available from Saks Fifth Avenue from October 1, with $35 from each shirt going to the Cancer Fund.

“Key to the Cure is one of Saks Fifth Avenue’s most important initiatives because of the numbers of people within our communities who are affected by cancer and depend on both the advancement of research and the efforts to ultimately find a cure,” said Steve Sadove, Chairman and CEO of Saks Fifth Avenue. “We are… truly privileged to have the support of Karl Lagerfeld and Gwyneth Paltrow in our momentous 10th anniversary year.”

Saks Fifth Avenue will also hold a charity shopping weekend from October 16-19 at all of its stores nationwide and online, during which 2% of sales will benefit local organizations through EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund.

Wyclef Jean Pushes For Economic Change In Haiti

Hip hop artist Wyclef Jean spent five days in his native Haiti last week to further his humanitarian efforts in the impoverished Caribbean nation, and used the visit to call for serious economic change.

The 35-year-old rapper – born in the Haitian village of Croix-des-Bouquets – stated that the country needs foreign investment and assistance with sustainable development to help its people beat the poverty and food shortages that are crippling its economy, not just charity and handouts that could cause Haiti to become even more dependent on other nations than it is now.

“I understand that there is a food crisis that needs to be addressed urgently, but at the same time donors need to inject funds in projects likely to bring sustainable results,” Jean told Reuters. “Charity will never solve Haiti’s problems. Haitians want jobs, they want to develop their agriculture to produce food, not to everlastingly receive food assistance. To solve the economic crisis, we need investments and to have investments we need security. To have security we have to start addressing the social problems in the most vulnerable and underprivileged neighborhoods.”

Jean, who was appointed as a roving ambassador for the country by President Rene Preval last year, has been working tirelessly to help Haitians in their day-to-day struggle to survive. He established the Yéle Haiti Foundation in 2005 to make a difference in education, health, environment and community development, and in May he launched an initiative to raise $48 million to expand food distribution and provide assistance to farmers. He has also urged Haitians to cut their high crime rate to make foreign investment more secure.

“Social and economic change will remain a utopian dream if we remain divided,” he said.

Wyclef Jean Forms Partnership For Haiti Food Crisis Help

Musician Wyclef Jean announced on Tuesday that his Yele Haiti Foundation has formed a partnership with two other charities to help address the growing food crisis in Haiti.

Rising food and fuel costs have left the Caribbean island nation’s poor unable to afford food, resulting in widespread hunger and even rioting. Haitian native Jean, who first made his name as a member of The Fugees, is joining forces with the United Nations World Food Programme and the Pan American Development Foundation to form Together for Haiti.

The programme hopes to raise $48 million, with which it will provide targeted food distribution, employment in agriculture regeneration programmes, and micro-enterprise grants.

At the Manhattan launch of the partnership, Wyclef Jean stressed the importance of helping the Haitian poor to help themselves:

“How can you make people in a poor economy entrepreneurs? Well, if you give these families five chickens and you give them food for these chickens and give then a cage they automatically become entrepreneurs. Because, they can eat now and they can raise the chickens and sell chickens.”

Together for Haiti is a natural extension to Jean’s Yéle Haiti Foundation, the goal of which the musician says is “to restore pride and a reason to hope, and for the whole country to regain the deep spirit and strength that is part of our heritage.”

Shakira and Latin Singers Unite Against Child Poverty, Again

The ‘Concert For The Children’ was staged last weekend, simultaneously in Mexico and Argentina, free to the over 300,000 expected viewers.

Packed with Latin stars including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Chayanne, Diego Torres, Juanes, Maná and Miguel Bosé, the concerts’ goal was to raise funds that charity ALAS will use to help the millions of children living in poverty throughout Latin America, and where an estimated 350,000 children die from poverty every year.

“People are condemned to poverty because there are no exits or choices,” Shakira said. “And children who don’t receive an opportunity end up as adults being involved with things that they never imagined they would be doing in the first place, like drug trafficking or being recruited into criminal groups. Imagine what Latin America could achieve if we invest in developing the potential of these children.”

ALAS, founded in 2006, has been bringing artists, intellectuals and entrepreneurs together to address the social emergency, and focuses on improving nutrition, health and education for children.

32 out of 54 million children in Latin America under the age of five live in poverty.

Shakira, who performed at the Buenos Aires venue, secured $200 million in donations for the performance. Ricky Martin played at the other venue at Mexico City’s main plaza, Zócalo.

“The funny thing is that Latin America produces three times what it needs to feed its population. So, it is doable, we can really eradicate poverty,” Shakira said. “What’s very inspiring is to see Latin America for the first time in charge of its own issues.”

Berry, Selleck Run/Walk For Women

Look to the Stars is very proud of our own Crystal A. Johnson , who took part in the weekend’s Revlon Run/Walk.

The 15th EIF Annual Revlon Run/Walk in Los Angeles took place Saturday Morning, kicked off by Halle Berry, Tom Selleck and Dancing With the Stars’ Carrie Ann Inaba strapping on their shoes for a great cause. The charity raises money to help in the fight against breast cancer.

However, I was not prepared for how touching it would be to see an ocean of walkers sporting tags or shirts dedicated to the memory of a loved one. Immediately, one is stricken with the gravity of the mission. Coverage of this event was double duty for me because I participated as a walker for the first time. My grandmother, Josephine Wilson had a mastectomy in the 60’s and was a proud survivor until a ripe old age. At the completion of the race, walkers and runners entered the LA Colliseum. By the time many of the walkers finished, 80’s classic group the Go Go’s were on stage performing hit tunes. Belinda Carlisle was looking great and still has the beat. Jesse McCartney also performed. Other stars such as Days of Our Lives’ Deidre Hall and actor Jonathan Hensley also showed their support.

The EIF Revlon Run/Walk happens annually in New York and Los Angeles.

Halle Berry, Jonas Brothers Support Revlon Run/Walk For Women

Pop-Rock band Jonas Brothers, took time out during a recent guest appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to sign an Epiphone guitar, courtesy of Gibson Guitars in support of the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Revlon Run/Walk For Women. The guitar, along with the pen Kevin, Joe and Nick used to sign it, is currently available on CharityFolks.com.

The Revlon Run/Walk for Women takes place annually in New York and Los Angeles, with the 15th Annual Entertainment Industry Foundation Revlon Run/Walk for Women Los Angeles taking place this Saturday, May 10. Our own Crystal A. Johnson is set to take part in this celebrated event. The New York Run/Walk took place on May 3rd.

Celebrities Send Signitures For Charity Auction

Sometimes, if you really believe in a cause and you want some celebrity help, you’ve just got to ask. That’s exactly what Simon McGuinness, a British teenager who recently got a whole lot of star-power behind his mission to raise money for CAFOD, did.

“The response was overwhelming,” said Simon, who contacted over 50 celebrities and asked for signitures and items to sell in an internet auction.”I had replies and donations from Dr Who’s David Tennant, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Rowan Atkinson, and even Prime Minister Gordon Brown.”

CAFOD – the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development – is a charity that supports communities abroad by helping provide food, water, education and health care, and McGuinness will stop at nothing in his quest to enlist celebrity help for the cause.

“It was just an idea and I didn’t know what sort of response I would receive so I am delighted and surprised to have made such an impact and to find that celebrities do care enough to respond to a boy’s requests,” said the thirteen-year-old. “My next step is to go for the big one, I mean the Queen, but I don’t know whether she is able to do this sort of thing.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Donates $75,000 To Food Bank

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has made a huge donation of $75,000 to an organization that helps feed the hungry in New York.

The 35-year-old mother-of-two and wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin made the donation to the Food Bank For New York City following a Food Bank gala last Saturday, April 19. It was the second time Paltrow has attended an event for the organization this month – she was guest of honor at the Can-Do Awards on April 8, which raised over $1 million for the Food Bank.

“I’ve been thinking about all the crap my children have and how much food we throw away,” the actress told the guests at the gala. “We have to do better.”

The Food Bank distributes free food to over 1.5 million hungry New Yorkers every year – that’s equivalent to over 68 million pounds of food annually, or 250,000 free meals a day for New Yorkers who otherwise would go hungry or not eat enough. Springsteen Shows His Heart

Bruce Springsteen recently showed a young special needs boy at one of his concerts exactly why he is still one of the biggest and best acts in rock.

Charity Buzz, an online auction site, is currently selling tickets to a number of Springsteen’s shows in a giant, ongoing auction to raise funds for Musicians on Call and the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, and the 58-year-old superstar took time out from one of his concerts to meet a winning bidder last week. The rocker left the stage during his show at the Toyota Center in Houston, Dallas, on April 14 to talk with the boy, who was confined to a wheelchair. The boy’s mother, who cried tears of happiness over the singer’s generous act, said he shared a conversation with her son and had his photo taken with the young fan.

The concert took place just a few days before the death of Spingsteen’s longtime keyboardist, Danny Federici, who passed away from melanoma on April 17 at the age of 58.

“Danny and I worked together for 40 years – he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician,” said Springsteen. “I loved him very much…we grew up together.”

As well as raising funds for Musicians on Call and the Kristen Ann Carr Fund through his auctions, Springsteen is also set to play some spectacular benefit gigs over the next few weeks. The first of these will take place at the Greensboro Coliseum on April 28, and will raise money for Project Green Leaf, an organization dedicated to sustaining local agriculture by strengthening community between farmers and consumers. The singer heard about the cause through the World Hunger Year organization, which he has supported for a number of years. As well as collecting money for the cause on the night, Springsteen has also donated tickets to the show to a charity auction being held over at www.charityfolks.com.

Springsteen will also perform a benefit concert at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey on Wednesday, May 7, to benefit the historic Count Basie Theatre and help offset the cost of the renovation and restoration of the theatre that will begin this summer. A portion of the concert proceeds will also support other programs and operations at the Theatre. Springsteen’s wife and bandmate, Patti Scialfa, serves on the Board of the Basie Foundation and as Honorary Chair of the Capital Campaign.

“We are excited that Bruce Springsteen will be performing a benefit concert and deeply appreciate his willingness to help preserve and restore the Basie,” said Rusty Young, CEO of the Basie Foundation.

After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.”

I guess you could say that Springsteen thinks Obama was “born to run” the country.

Celebrities Bring Attention To UN Efforts

With the press watching their every move, more and more stars are making their moves count by sharing the spotlight with United Nations missions.

In the past months alone, actress Drew Barrymore pledged $1 million to the United Nations’ World Food Program to bring attention to rising food prices; actress and Avon Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon began raising money for the United Nations Development Fund For Women for education, job training and better laws for underprivileged women; Bono raised an impressive $42 million at his (RED) charity auction for the United Nations Foundation AIDs programs; and actress and UNICEF spokeswoman Salma Hayek promoted her anti-tetanus campaign on Oprah.

Outspoken actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow uses her celebrity in ways that politicians might not, relentlessly reminding us of the tragic details of Dafur. Farrow says, “I’m completely free to say anything I want. I have no trade agreements with anyone.”

George Clooney, the latest to be named Messenger of Peace by the United Nations for his efforts in Chad, Congo and Dafur, told ABC News, “I think what they’re looking to gain from [awarding me] is cameras following me to places that they’re trying to get attention to and that’s fine. That’s a good use of celebrity if you ask me.”

Celebrity faces fronting causes may help attract broader attention or raise bigger money more quickly, but it may also do something for the celebrity.

Actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, who is pushing governments to plan an Iraq refugee relief effort, told ABC News, “[Activism] gives celebrity some reason. Celebrity is very weird… So when you’re doing something good and you can bring attention to that or discuss that, then it feels like you have some sense in your life.”

Counting Crows' Instruments Fly Out The Door For GreyBirds

The members of rock band Counting Crows have auctioned off tickets, albums, memorabilia and instruments, raising nearly $20,000 for charity.

The proceeds will benefit the GreyBird Foundation, which grew out of the outreach program the band established in 1998 to encourage and support people to become more helpful in their own neighborhoods. Through GreyBird, the band provides a platform for other outreach groups at Counting Crows concerts. They also ask audience members to bring canned food to the concerts for donation, and encourage people to vote.

“The most patriotic act you can ever do in your life is to vote,” says Duritz.

On an international level, GreyBird works with Kids for Tomorrow, which helps fund and build schools for children in Africa.

“We’re just trying to keep kids in school a little longer.”

The highest bid in the auction – $7600 – was for lead singer Adam Duritz’s handwritten song lyric book. Concert tickets plus dinners with the band were also big sellers.

Ben Mize’s drum is the last Counting Crows item still up for auction, on Ebay until April 21. Proceeds will benefit Nuçi’s Space, a center for musicians suffering from depression.

Bruce Springsteen Brings His Human Touch To Charity Auction

The Boss is back, and he is doing his part to help the hungry.

Bruce Springsteen has donated four tickets to his concert on April 30 in Charlottesville to an auction to benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, an organization that serves over 129,000 needy people every year in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia.

The food bank is also holding a virtual food drive before and after Springsteen’s appearance at Charlottesville’s John Paul Jones Arena, and donations can be made at www.brafb.org between April 14 and May 3.

Feeding the hungry is a cause Springsteen takes seriously, and he has been a long-term supporter of World Hunger Year’s Artists Against Hunger and Poverty program, an initiative that brings performers together to support hunger relief organizations across North America.

George Clooney Keeps Air Rescue To Darfur Going

When the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned earlier this month that their air transportations to help war-torn Darfur, Sudan, would soon stop due to lack of funds, George Clooney stepped up with his charity group Not On Our Watch by contributing $6.24 million to keep their air transport operations going.

“We are proud to help ensure the survival of this lifesaving program and strongly encourage others to do the same,” said UN Messenger of Peace and award-winning actor George Clooney. “Protection of these victims should not fall solely in the hands of charitable organizations,” he added. “Governments have a responsibility to help those who cannot defend themselves.”

“Having seen first hand the epic humanitarian challenge in Darfur, George Clooney and his colleagues know the life saving power of the Humanitarian Air Service,” WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran said.

She added, “This contribution will make a difference to the millions of vulnerable women and children trapped there, and we hope it will inspire other donations.”

Even with the help George Clooney and his organization has done, WFP representative in Sudan, Kenro Oshidari mentioned that they are still in need of funds to keep their air operations going past April of this year.

“We are hoping that more funds will come in, because there is a big gap between the $6 million we have now and the $77 million that we need this year,” he explained.

Darfur is currently known by many humanitarians as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in the world today. Yet, at the same time, it’s one of the most neglected problems in terms of help coming from the world community.

Ellen DeGeneres will once again be joining Ryan Seacrest to host the second edition of the wildly successful Idol Gives Back.

Also joining this year’s previously announced celebrity attendees such as Brad Pitt and Bono will be Maroon 5, Heart, Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men and the Clark Brothers.

The hit fundraising show raised $76 million last year, benefitting charities such as UNICEF, Malaria No More and Second Harvest.
