James Bond's Secret Charity Mission In Myanmar

Daniel Craig – star of the upcoming James Bond film Quantum of Solace – is to donate money to victims of the cyclone that ripped through Myanmar in May.

According to reports, the actor will donate about $12,000 to buy new boats for a group of fishermen in the Irrawaddy delta after their fleet was ravaged by Cyclone Nargis earlier this year. The report states that Craig will donate four sea-going vessels and 21 smaller boats to fishermen in the Ah-lai-thaung village of Pyin-kha-yaing town.

’His representative came to Myanmar and said he will pay for 25 fishing boats, and our committee brought the representative to that village," said a member from the fishery rehabilitation committee. “It will cost about 15 million kyats [$12,345] for the fishing boats to be made locally.”

Cyclone Nargis caused incredible damage to Myanmar and caused at least 146,000 fatalities with thousands more people still missing. Damage has been estimated at over $10 billion, and the United Nations were called in to help with relief efforts. However, due to political reasons, much of the aid did not reach the areas it was needed most.

Daniel Craig is no stranger to helping stricken mariners. He is a major supporter of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, an organization that provides a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts.

Denis Leary Raising Fire Funds in Marathon

The Leary Firefighters Foundation will be competing with its inaugural “Team LFF” in the ING New York City Marathon on November 1, 2009. This is a rare opportunity to participate as a runner or supporter in one of the most prestigious running events in the world.

Through its partnership with the New York Road Runners, The Leary Firefighters Foundation has been awarded a limited number of guaranteed fundraising entries. The proceeds raised by team members and supporters will go to The Foundation’s charitable mission of providing fire departments with the tools they need to maintain the highest level of public safety.

“We’re very excited to start Team LFF and have our inaugural Fire Battalion run in the New York City Marathon this November,” said actor Denis Leary, president of the Leary Firefighters Foundation. “It’s a great way to get our mission in front of a brand new audience, all while taking part in one of the most famous races in the greatest city in the world.”

All Team LFF runners registering for guaranteed entry must raise a minimum amount and will receive team perks such as team gear, training programs, goody bag, post-marathon after party, and other items to be announced. A second tier is available to those who have secured entry into the ING New York City Marathon 2009 at a lower fundraising minimum, but would like to be part of Team LFF.

All runners must first register for the ING New York City Marathon 2009 to receive an entry number.

Lord Of The Rings Actor Abseils For Charity

Lord of the Rings actor Bernard Hill was part of a charity event in the UK earlier this week to raise money and awareness for a campaign to help the Royal National Lifeboat Institution train new volunteers.

Hill, who played King Theoden in the movie trilogy, joined actor David Morrissey in abseiling down the iconic Southwold Lighthouse for the event.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. It operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 100 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since it was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives.

“It shouldn’t be a charity – it should be a state-funded institution like the NHS,” said Hill. “It’s a mark of the quality of the people that volunteer for it because people would just die out there without their help. It’s a vital service. People don’t understand what the sea is about and how dangerous it can be, that in five minutes it can all change.”

Jay-Z Answers The Call For Charity

Hip Hop megastar Jay-Z played a tribute concert in New York on Friday night to mark the deaths of those that lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks eight years ago.

The Answer The Call show, which launched his new album Blueprint 3, raised money for the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund, a charity fund that has distributed over $96 million to the families of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty since 1986.

The rapper was joined by stars such as Kanye West, Pharell Williams, P. Diddy, John Mayer, Beyoncé Knowles, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Santigold for a two hour show that covered hits from his 11 album career.

“Make some noise for everybody that lost their lives so we can live ours,” the rapper told the crowd. “We stand here tonight eight years later even stronger, even stronger.”

He also held a minute of silence to honor those who lost their lives in the attack.

Ronnie Corbett Leads Stars In British Charity Campaign

British comedy legend Ronnie Corbett is among a host of celebrities who have pledged their support online for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's biggest fundraising day, SOS Day, which takes place on Friday 29 January.

Stars of the big screen James and Oliver Phelps, who play Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter films, have joined BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, Rugby World Cup winner Ben Cohen, lyricist Just Jack, round-the-world yachtswoman Hannah White and Hairspray star Sharon D Clarke in raising awareness and funds for the charity that saves lives at sea.

As part of a fundraising challenge called Sell Our Secrets, the celebrities have each filmed short ‘teaser’ videos, which are posted on the RNLI Shout! YouTube channel, saying they have a secret or story to share.

They’re asking YouTubers to make a donation to help them meet their fundraising target for RNLI SOS Day. In return, they will disclose their secret, story or anecdote via a ‘reveal’ video posted on the site on 29 January (RNLI SOS Day). Visitors to the site are also being encouraged to get involved by posting videos or text comments sharing their own secrets or stories.

‘SOS Day is the RNLI’s biggest day of fundraising and we’re really thrilled have such a fantastic group of celebrities supporting the cause to help our volunteer crews and lifeguards.

‘Sell Our Secrets is a fun and exciting challenge. We really hope people will visit the site, watch the teaser videos and encourage the celebrities to reveal their secret or story on 29 January by making a donation to help the charity that saves lives at sea. Anyone who wants to get involved by sharing their own secret or story online is very welcome to do so.’

Formula 1 Mastermind Launches Charity Challenge

Formula 1 mastermind Ross Brawn has joined forces with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to raise £350,000 for a new lifeboat on the River Thames.

Earlier this week, Ross launched the initiative called The Brawn Lifeboat Challenge, in which teams from some of the UK’s leading businesses will be pitting their entrepreneurial wits against each other in a unique fundraising battle.

The 11 teams taking part in the Challenge will compete to raise as much money as possible in just eight months. Teams will pitch their strategies to Ross, who is considered to be one of the most inspirational leaders in the UK, and benefit from his advice and extensive experience of working with highly successful teams.

The teams are briefed to turn £1,000 into a profit for the RNLI using their own ingenuity, determination, creativity, teamwork and strategic planning to reach their fundraising targets over the course of the Challenge, which runs until 31 December 2010. The money raised will fund a new lifeboat on the River Thames.

Ross, winner of the Formula 1 Constructors and Drivers championships 2009 and now Team Principal of the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula 1 Team, says: ‘This is a ground-breaking challenge which pits some of the UK’s top companies against each other to raise funds for a new lifeboat. The lifeboat will be shared between Tower and Chiswick RNLI lifeboat stations and will save many lives for years to come.

‘Innovation is pivotal in Formula 1 and that’s what appealed to me about this challenge, which combines many of my passions: competition, the desire to be the best and, of course, engineering innovation. Harry Potter Stars Get Wacky For Charity

Harry Potter stars Rupert Grint, and brothers Oliver and James Phelps are rallying support for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) by taking part in the Barmy to Barcelona Wacky Rally this weekend.

Rupert, Oliver and James have really pushed the boat out with their 1992 Vauxhall Carlton rally car, decking it out in the familiar livery of an RNLI all-weather lifeboat.

  Continuing with their maritime theme, the trio have entered the race as The Salty Sea Dogs and aim to raise awareness and funds for the charity that saves lives at sea.

  Taking in the amazing Swiss Alps, rolling hills of Italy, French Riviera and the Spanish Catalan capital, The Salty Sea Dogs are hoping to propel their way to a competitive time in their first wacky rally.

  "The idea of a wacky rally seemed like quite good fun, while also being challenging," said Oliver Phelps. “Having great admiration for the work of RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards, who often face challenging situations, it made sense to choose to support them and their lifesaving work. The distinctive RNLI colours also gave us great inspiration for the car.”  

Oliver and brother James have supported the RNLI previously by taking part in the charity’s national fundraising day, SOS Day, which takes place annually on the last Friday in January.

   "We expect to “coast” to Barcelona, ha ha," joked Rupert Grint. “This is a brilliant way to see some great bits of Europe and even better that we can do it for a great cause. We’ve even got company in the form of a seagull perched on the boot of the car; we’re hoping it won’t need rescuing when the rally starts for real! The RNLI does a fantastic job but it’s only possible because of people’s donations. Tracey Emin Creates Anonymous Art For Charity

Tracey Emin, Zandra Rhodes, Martin Clunes, Vic Reeves and Bear Grylls are just a few of the famous names to have contributed to an anonymous postcard art auction, being held this Saturday (11 September) in aid of Margate RNLI.

Margate Harbour Arm Gallery is staging the auction of 100 postcard-sized pieces of work, which have been kindly donated by celebrities, professional artists and amateurs from Kent and beyond.The name of the artist behind each piece of artwork remains undisclosed until all the works have been auctioned, so bidders will not be sure whether they’re bidding on a Tracey Emin original or a piece by an unknown.

An exhibition of the work is now open at the gallery daily from 10am – 3pm and also online at Facebook – click the photos tab. The auction will take place from 3pm on Saturday and people unable to attend can make a bid on the piece of art they like either at the gallery or through Facebook.

Actor Martin Clunes, one of the famous names to have donated a postcard, explains: “Being very familiar with the work of the RNLI, I know that the professionalism of its volunteer lifeboat crews has been honed down to a fine art, so I am only too happy to lend my creative flair to the Margate art auction to help raise the much-needed money to enable to charity and its crews to continue their lifesaving work.”

The work will be auctioned by local writer/journalist Jane Wenham-Jones and Will Wollen, Creative Director of the Theatre Royal, Margate.

Prince William And Kate Middleton To Attend Charity Lifeboat Naming Ceremony

Preparations for a royal visit are underway at Trearddur Bay lifeboat station as Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) volunteer crew, fundraisers and supporters in the Anglesey village get ready to welcome HRH Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton.

The royal couple will be guests of honour at the naming ceremony of the RNLI lifeboat station’s new Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, Hereford Endeavour, on Thursday 24 February.

During the engagement Prince William and Miss Middleton will meet the charity’s volunteers and name the new lifeboat. The Hereford Endeavour will be launched during the ceremony as the crew demonstrate some of her rescue capabilities to the royal party and station guests.

Aubrey Diggle, Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: ’It’s an honour to have Prince William and Miss Middleton at our naming ceremony. Naming a new lifeboat is always a special occasion for the charity where we can thank our supporters and fundraisers. Having the royal couple there will make the day even more memorable for the whole community.’

The lifeboat station at Trearddur Bay was first opened in 1967. Since then, RNLI volunteers have launched the lifeboat 873 times and saved 202 lives. In 1971, Helmsman John Burns and Crew Member Edmund Williams were awarded the RNLI’s Bronze Medal for rescuing two people from a capsized dinghy in treacherous sea conditions.

Christopher Pritchard, Senior Helmsman, said: ‘Having Prince William and Miss Middleton name our new lifeboat is especially significant to us. As Prince William is a pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force just down the road at RAF Valley, we also welcome him as a colleague who works with us to save lives at sea.’

The Atlantic 85 is the most advanced inshore lifeboat produced by the RNLI. She can reach speeds of up to 35 knots and is fitted with a radar system, radio direction finding equipment and a sophisticated chart plotter to aid search and rescue operations, particularly in low visibility. She will also be able to carry more casualties than her predecessor.

Paul Boissier, RNLI Chief Executive, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Prince William and Miss Middleton to Trearddur Bay and privileged to host one of their first engagements together. We have a proud history of royal patronage and are honoured that Prince William and Miss Middleton will be continuing that tradition.’

The RNLI is an independent charity, which relies on public donations in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Trearddur Bay’s new Atlantic 85 is the latest in a long tradition of lifeboats funded by the hard work of fundraisers and the generosity of the public.

Hereford Endeavour was funded by the local RNLI fundraising branch in Leominster and other fundraising branches across Herefordshire. Before the lifeboat was delivered to her new station, she made a special visit to Hereford Cathedral so that the members of Leominster branch could see the result of their hard work.

Celia Imrie Launches Lifeboat Appeal

Celia Imrie, much-loved British actress and star of stage and screen, has officially launched a £1M public appeal for funds to create a new lifeboat station in Cowes.

The leading British actress, well known for her work Nanny McPhee, Acorn Antiques and Dinnerladies, with Victoria Wood, is the patron of the appeal, which will lead to a greatly improved lifeboat station serving the Solent.

Celia was escorted by lifeboat from the current station in Shepards Wharf marina to the new building – the old Custom House. She told an audience of RNLI supporters, fundraisers and guests that she was delighted to be the patron the Cowes Lifeboat Station Appeal.

Dressed in the brightly coloured protective clothing that is standard issue kit for volunteer lifeboat crew members, Celia immediately charmed the waiting crowd: ’I’m absolutely thrilled to be here today, and wearing this kit. Obviously they don’t have many people with chests because this is mighty tight!’

She went on to say: ‘The current station is a changing room, an office, a classroom, so they need this new station. All the crew are total volunteers, and it is absolutely wonderful to think they are going to have a new station nearer the Solent. Those vital four minutes when they have to answer a call immediately are going to make them even faster to launch.’

The current Cowes lifeboat station is a small, temporary facility within Shepherds Wharf marina, but the RNLI plans to refurbish the old Custom House building, near the mouth of the River Medina. This location will reduce the lifeboat launching time by four minutes, allowing the crew to reach casualties more quickly, which in turn could prove crucial in saving lives out at sea.

Celia continued: ‘To get people to do things and give up their time for nothing, and risk their own lives, is wonderful and I am so proud to be involved with the crew today. I am so in admiration and am very proud to be the patron of this appeal.’

Celia – who also starred in blockbuster British feel-good film, Calendar Girls – agreed to come on board as she has had a home in Cowes since 1989, and was keen to lend her support for the charity that saves lives at sea. She said: ‘I am aware that many islanders have already donated towards another RNLI appeal for Bembridge in recent years; for the Cowes appeal, we hope to entice supporters from the sailing fraternity. There are many people who, like me don’t live permanently in Cowes, but visit here regularly for its beauty, escaping from London, all year round sailing, or just for the famous Cowes week and the fireworks.

‘As Cowes is the sailing ’capital’ we hope that all those who arrive by boat to the town and its surrounding waters will see the importance of this appeal and help us achieve the £1M target.’

Celebrity Love Letter To New York On 9/11 Anniversary

A highly esteemed cast of celebrities will perform Sarah Tuft’s play ‘110 Stories’ this coming 9/11 as a love letter to NY to benefit a related charity.

To commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11, artists including Susan Sarandon, James Gandolfini, Matt Dillon, Edie Falco, Sam Shepard, Patricia Clarkson, Kathleen Turner, Angela Bassett, John Turturro, Andre Braugher, Josh Lucas, John Hawkes, Michael Shannon, Stelio Savante, Michael Stuhlbarg, Aasif Mandvi and Daniel Sunjata will share first hand accounts of the tragedy.

“110 Stories” has been performed annually on Sept 11th at The Public Theater (2004), The Geffen Playhouse (2010), The Vineyard Theatre (2003), as part of “Brave New World” at Town Hall (2002) and at The Grove Street Theater (2001). Proceeds have gone to The Leary Firefighters Foundation, LA Red Cross for Haiti Relief, New York Children’s Foundation and The Salvation Army.

Tuft’s play weaves first-person accounts – selected from hundreds collected right after September 11th – into a journey that recalls our wounds as well as works towards healing them. It’s the human side of history, without politics and agenda, giving voice to those who experienced 9/11 directly… a firefighter, homeless couple, cop, iron-worker, massage therapist, chaplain, K9 handler, a mother, an elderly bulldog, a South American photojournalist. Together, these accounts shine a light into the human spirit – revealing hope, humor and compassion in the midst of tragedy.

Harry Potter Stars Climb For Charity

Harry Potter stars James and Oliver Phelps swapped their broomsticks for climbing boots as they took on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for their favourite charities The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The twins, who play Fred and George Weasley in the blockbuster series, scaled the heights of the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in 23 hours after setting off on their challenge.

Taking in Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, Oliver said: ‘Climbing Ben Nevis took a lot longer than I thought it would but it was incredible to make it to the summit.. at the top of Britain. Scafell Pike was a challenge as it was where I hit ’the wall’ and by the time we got to Snowdon, I had only had about 2 hours sleep. It was tough getting to the top with fatigue setting in. But finally making it up there with just enough time for one last photo, despite the rain, I made it down just inside the time limit.’

Oliver added: ‘The pride and relief was amazing in completing the three peaks and it was a very rewarding experience . My stamina is higher than I thought it could be. The great support that I received from everybody kept me going, so huge thanks go to all.’

Encouraging their followers on Twitter to sponsor them, James has been raising money for the world-leading children’s hospital whilst Oliver has been raising money for the RNLI.

‘I have made a couple of visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Christmas parties for a few years now,’ said James. ’But it was only earlier in the year that I visited the hospital itself. And it is a day I will never forget. Not only did I see how hard working all of the staff there are, but how amazing the children in there are also. Even for some, fighting life threatening illnesses, their attitude and determination was something that I will always remember.

‘Before I had even left the building I had decided that I wanted to do something to raise a little bit (of the £50m+ a year) to help rebuild and refurbish the hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research.’

Oliver is hoping to raise £2k to cover the costs of equipping and training two RNLI lifeguards who will patrol Fistral beaches in Cornwall, a beach he has surfed off in the past. Helly Hansen, official supplier to RNLI lifeguards who provide a seasonal service on 163 UK and Channel Island beaches, have also helped by providing the technical clothing Oliver needed to complete the challenge. In 2010, RNLI lifeguards aided 18,779 people and saved 107 lives.

Bernard Hill Abseils For Charity Again

Actor Bernard Hill – best known for appearing in films such as Titanic and Lord of the Rings – was one of 90 people who abseiled down a lighthouse in the UK recently to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Win Harry Potter Star's Jacket In Charity Competition

On the day that the final installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise is released on Blu-ray and DVD, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is launching a competition to win a jacket worn by Oliver Phelps, the film’s George Weasley.

Oliver undertook the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the RNLI, scaling the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in June. Now fans of the actor can enter a competition to win the Helly Hansen jacket that he wore taking part in the challenge.

The Barrier Jacket includes commemorative branding which makes it a great piece of memorabilia for fans of Oliver and the Harry Potter films to get their hands on. Entry to the competition costs £3, which will go towards Oliver’s target of raising £1,996 to pay for two RNLI lifeguards to be fully trained and equipped to patrol Fistral beach in Cornwall next season.

Gwyneth Paltrow And Coldplay Donate To Charity Pub Quiz Auction

Academy-award winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow was among a host of stars who donated items for auction at an annual Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RLNI) Pub Quiz, organized for RNLI SOS Day, the charity’s largest fundraising day.

The quiz, which takes place each year at The Duke of York pub in Borough Road, Southwark, raised a whopping £5,460 for the Royal national Lifeboat Institution, the lifesaving charity that has been operating a search and rescue service on the River Thames since 2002.

Gwyneth, much loved star of films such as Emma and the Ironman films, donated a signed copy of her cookbook, Notes from My Kitchen Table, to accompany a signed copy of Shakespeare in Love, the film which won her an Oscar.

Among the other rare items participants bid for were signed albums from Gwyneth’s husband, Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin, and tickets to see the filming of an episode of Graham Norton’s chat show, followed by drinks with him after the show. Acting legend Sir Ian McKellen donated something from his latest career move; dinner at ‘The Grapes’ pub in Limehouse, an establishment he has recently purchased.

Quiz organiser, Paul Cullen, who works for the RNLI said: “Each year we are incredibly fortunate to receive the support of a huge number of celebrities and top names from stage and screen. We are massively grateful to those people who donate items such as these as they always help us to raise a fantastic amount to help our crew members save lives. We’re also indebted to a number of local companies such as Thames RIB Experience, Bateaux and Target Live, who also contribute substantial prizes to the night, not forgetting our wonderful hostess, Lorraine Hart, and her team at The Duke.”

The figure of £5460.00 surpasses previous fundraising evenings at the quiz and it is hoped that this upward trend will continue in 2013!
