Jenny Jones To Give Further $1 Million To Community Heroes

Former talk show host Jenny Jones is giving away another $1 million to community heroes.

Jones gave away $1 million last year through her Jenny's Heroes program to individuals who submitted the best ideas for tangible, lasting community projects chosen for their significant long-term benefits. Among them were ordinary people doing extraordinary things for their communities, such as Dee Wild – who was awarded $7000 by Jenny’s Heroes to buy 15 new ham radios for her fellow volunteer search and rescue K9 handlers – and Rabbi Merrill Shapiro of the Flager County Cold Weather Shelter Coalition, who was awarded $3000 for a new computer printer, a year of high-speed internet access, and warm clothing.

Jenny’s Heroes looks for specific ideas where they can purchase, repair, upgrade, provide equipment, or otherwise make improvements to benefit the community. Grants of up to $25,000 are made for individual projects.

“The Hero does not benefit, they are all doing this for other people in the community, and that’s why they are Heroes,” Jones told Look To The Stars. “The money goes to the store or to the supplier or if someone is installing stuff – we pay him or her directly. For instance, I have a great relationship with Best Buy, among others. If a Hero is awarded a grant and they call me from Best Buy, I’ll give the store manager my credit card to pay for the items. I make the purchases to the point where I have to be by the phone almost all the time. I am 100% hands on. Between reading the applications, personally updating the website and communicating with the Heroes.”

Jenny Jones is certainly no stranger to philanthropy. The Jenny Jones Foundation was established in 2005 as a means to provide assistance to those in need. Primary areas of focus are education, women’s health, and improving communities throughout the country. She has donated heavily to breast cancer research – 100% of the proceeds from her 1997 autobiography went to the cause – and to education for the disadvantaged. She also donated the proceeds from her cookbook, Look Good Feel Great, to breast cancer research at City of Hope. She unveiled Jenny’s Heroes in 2008.

“I didn’t know what to expect!” she said. “I know the Internet is so vast and there are so many people out there and I thought ‘is anybody even going to know this is here’ and ‘what if I get no responses’ but now I’m at the point where I can’t even keep count of how many applications I have, and I read them all. It’s really, really been great.”

Kevin Bacon To Be Honored For Networking With A Conscience

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) has announced that renowned actor and philanthropist Kevin Bacon will be presented with the third annual Joel Siegel Award by Meryl Streep at the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

The ceremony, hosted by Kristin Chenoweth, will air live on VH1 Friday, January 15, 2010 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.

Given annually, this special award for philanthropy pays homage to beloved “Good Morning America” film critic and BFCA member Joel Siegel, who lost his long struggle with cancer in June, 2007.

Kevin Bacon is one of the foremost actors of his generation and has starred in over 50 films. His talent for balancing starring roles with powerful supporting characters on both film and stage has allowed him to build a varied and critically acclaimed body of work. Kevin has proven his talents in a wide range of film genres from action thrillers to romantic comedies to heavy dramas, and even the occasional musical. Kevin most recently starred in “Taking Chance” for which he received Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations.

The Welcome House in Northern Kentucky has announced its annual fundraising benefit, ‘Home is Where the Heart Is’, will be held on January 30 at The Madison Grand Ballroom, Covington, Kentucky. Featured special guest speaker is Malaak Compton-Rock, philanthropist, author and wife of entertainer Chris Rock.

Compton-Rock is founder of The Angel Rock Project, an e-village promoting everything to do with service, humanity, peace, equality, social responsibility, and sustainable change. She is also involved with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and has founded the non-profit company, StyleWORKS, which provides a wide range of grooming services for women transitioning from welfare to the workplace. Compton-Rock was also a judge on Oprah Winfrey's ‘The Big Give.’

Stars Want To Refresh Everything With Pepsi For Charity

Starting today, America can cast their votes at www.refresheverything.com for the refreshing consumer-generated ideas that they believe will make a positive impact on their communities. This is the first of eleven opportunities for the public to win grants from $5,000 up to $250,000 throughout the year.

The first voting session ends on February 28 and the ideas that receive the top votes will be announced on Monday, March 1, 2010.

The Pepsi Refresh Project, a groundbreaking effort to foster innovation in social good, will award more than $20 million this year to fund great ideas that refresh the world. The program launched on January 13 and has already exceeded expectations by receiving the monthly limit of 1,000 submissions in less than seven days with at least one from each state in the U.S. Joining this effort are actors Demi Moore and Kevin Bacon, who have generated their own ideas for Pepsi Refresh and are competing for support in the Pepsi Refresh Celebrity Challenge, which also launches today.

I am very pleased to be a part of this creative initiative to refresh our world,” said Demi Moore. The grant would provide support to outreach workers who help women who have experienced sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking integrate back into society as healthy, safe, productive individuals.

Demi Moore's GEMS To Receive Pepsi Refresh Grant

Actress Demi Moore secures victory over actor, Kevin Bacon to win the Pepsi Refresh Celebrity Challenge and Demi’s selected cause, GEMS: Girls Educational & Mentoring Services will be awarded the top prize of $250,000.

GEMS is the nation’s largest non-profit organization designed to empower American girls and young women, ages 12-21 who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.

A long-time anti-trafficking advocate, Demi unleashed the power of her social media network to get out the vote for her cause to benefit GEMS. “The Pepsi Refresh Grant will allow GEMS to train 10 former victims as outreach workers and employ them to go back to their community and refresh the lives of thousands of victimized girls. I believe the work that GEMS is doing is nothing short of heroic!,” says Demi who along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, launched the DNA Foundation committed to protecting the freedom of the world’s most vulnerable citizens by forcing sex slavery out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

“I am thrilled that GEMS has gained powerful allies in Demi Moore and The DNA Foundation and honored to be the beneficiary of a Pepsi Refresh Grant. Jennifer Garner Visits School For Idol Gives Back

Jennifer Garner was in Kentucky recently to film segments for Idol Gives Back, scheduled to hit the Fox Network on April 21.

Garner visited an elementary school in Brethitt County to encourage literacy in children.

“She was super. She worked wonderfully with the kids,” LBJ Elementary School Principal Ron Combs told the Brethhitt Times-Voice. “She was excited to be here, and she was familiar with the terrain of this area, since she grew up in West Virginia. She understands this region.”

Garner is well known for advocating education and literacy in children. Earlier this year she asked Barack Obama for additional funding for early childhood education. She also attended February’s Milk+Bookies Story Time Celebration. Watch our exclusive video of the event here.

Seattle-based filmmaker Zeek Earl has been awarded the Grand Prize in the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council’s public service advertising contest, which was run on the Zooppa crowdsourcing platform. Zooppa is a global social media network of nearly 60,000 creative enthusiasts developing people-inspired brand marketing and non-profit campaign concepts.

The winning entries will become part of the global public service campaign to support Pause to Support a Cause.

LTTS Exclusive: Former NFL Champ Talks Charity

Ex-NFLer Jerry Rice hosted The Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae recently with a goal of raising $500,000 for Bay Area charities and non-profit organizations through the PGA Tours innovative ‘Tickets Fore Charity program.’

The charity event festivities kicked off the weekend with a celebrity poker tournament hosted by poker star Phil Hellmuth and Jerry Rice.

And while both Hellmuth and Rice were gracious in their duties as hosts, there were a slew of NFL greats taking part in this charity event. And one athlete in particular caught my eye: NFL legend and two-time Super-Bowl champion Darryl Pollard.

Pollard played seven seasons in the NFL, two seasons with Tampa and earning both his Super Bowl rings with the 1988 & 1989 San Francisco 49ers. Yet, despite his career fame, Pollard lacks a sense of entitlement generally seen in professional athletes and credits this to his upbringing. “It all starts at home,” he told us.

Look to the Stars was fortunate to meet this remarkable athlete and took a few minutes to pick his brain about his rare sincerity.

Is it possible for a professional athlete to retain a sense of social responsibility after a professional career?

Yes, but the most important thing is to know what you’re doing and why you are doing it –because at the end of the day, it’s what you were before (your professional career) and what you are after that’s important. To truly carry on a legacy you must help make a difference- not just collect trophies.

What advice would you give younger players entering the league?

The hardest part of all, you can get caught in whirlwind, a world that’s not real. When it all calms down, and the lights dim down, that sense of reality will not be there anymore. The attention may not be there one day, so if you have a cause that was near to you before, always keep it real. If you’re an advocate for something you really believe in, people need to hear about it all the time.

Last and most importantly-keep it real and keep it professional. At the end of your career all you have is your achievements, your name and the professionalism on how you got things done. I have known a lot of organizations that have failed because they were being ran by family members and associates who did not understand non profit or how a non profit should be ran.

Which organizations do you feel are making a difference in the world?

Image of Change is doing amazing work and I am proud to be a part of their organization. Athletes thinking about starting a foundation or want help to get their foundation right, should work with them. Top notch! One of the programs we support together is Youth Speaks. It’s about giving kids a podium to speak what’s on their mind and a sense of self esteem unlike anything I have seen before. They have thousands of kids across the country benefiting from their programs. These are a couple who are making it happen and are doing it for the right reasons.

Shaun Robinson To Host Charity Event For Teenage Girls

The next global volunteer trip is scheduled for August 2010, and will take youth from the Bushwick, Brownsville, and Bedford-Stuyvesant Salvation Army Community Centers, as well as 15 college aged mentors from NYU, Pratt Institute, and Medgar Evers College.

Celebrities who attend the Giving Lounge on Thursday, January 13, were given the opportunity to make a difference by filming short PSAs for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and spending time with some of the hospitals’ “Miracle” kids.

The Second Annual Milk+Bookies Story Time Celebration will take place on Sunday, March 20.

Milk + Bookies is a nationwide charitable organization that inspires children to give back, using books as its currency. The organization facilitates opportunities for children to raise book donations and give back to their peers who do not have access to books of their own by providing them the tools to host small events nationwide. Milk + Bookies combines two essential and worthwhile efforts: service learning and literacy promotion.

Inspired by Bill Gates & Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge, the Give Back Hollywood Foundation has brought together some of the biggest names in music, fashion, sports and entertainment to demonstrate their commitment to philanthropy with the launch of the “Hollywood Pledge”.

Stars who have already taken the Pledge include Laurence Fishburne, Richard Gere, Dwight Howard, Hugh Jackman, Jewel, Kim Kardashian, Ricky Martin, Kelly Osbourne, Rachel Zoe, Jordin Sparks, Denzel Washington, and many others.

Celebrities take the Hollywood Pledge through the HollywoodPledge.com website and list the charity or charities they support. Fans are also encouraged to give back, whether through monetary donations, volunteer work, or just getting involved in their communities to make a difference.

Royal Visit Changes Attitudes In Canada

As part of their first official tour through Canada, Prince William and his new wife – the Duchess of Cambridge – made a visit to a centre for street kids in Quebec City.

Giving guidance and support to disadvantaged youth is one of the three areas of focus for the Foundation Prince William set up with his brother, Prince Harry, in 2009. Nevertheless, with the reputation of the Canadian province least affectionate towards British royalty, some of the centre’s youth had lackluster expectations about the visit, yet planned to participate out of a sense of obligation to the centre.

After the visit, however, the story changed. Excited and enthusiastic teenagers sang praises of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Across Canada, people have been impressed again and again by William and Kate’s genuine interest in individuals and the sense of normalcy about them, despite their station.

“Of course he’s royalty,… But he seems close to people. He seemed like a normal guy,” said one young man at the centre, according to a Globe and Mail report.

“They were really interested in my life story,” said another. “It was a real surprise. …I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they are people with such an open spirit,” the paper reported.

A few days later on the other side of the country, the couple impressed the locals again when they touched down at the Calgary airport. A little six-year-old girl, who is fighting the same cancer that her mother died from not long ago, ran across the tarmac in a pink dress and headband to give Kate’s legs a hug. It was her wish to meet a princess.

“They were beyond lovely with her,” the Calgary mayor told the Globe. “What kind people.”

William And Kate Create Care Packages For Military Children

Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, better known to Royals watchers as William and Kate, took part in a care package stuffing event at the Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles during their trip to the US. In partnership with the USO and Blue Star Families, the Royal Couple helped to create 1,000 care packages for military children as part of their highly anticipated North American trip.

The kits that were produced focus on the children of military families who have parents deployed. Conceived and created by the Trevor Romain Foundation, “With You All the Way” kits help children and their families prepare for deployment, stay connected during the separation and plan for reintegration upon their return home.

“The USO is extremely proud to be a partner in this very important effort to connect people who have served in the military, and their spouses, with potential employers,” said Frank Thorp, senior vice president for marketing and communications for USO. “And stuffing Trevor Romain ‘With You All The Way’ kits as the service project for the event was perfect as it also reminded us of the challenges that children of our troops make when their Moms and Dads serve.”

The kits that were assembled by the Royal Couple and volunteers will be delivered to kids and families based in California, the island of Guam and other areas that are in need of the valuable comfort and support that Trevor Romain consistently delivers for the USO.

Prior to the care package stuffing event, the Royal Couple assisted ServiceNation: Mission Serve, a civilian-military initiative dedicated to bringing together civilian and military communities through service and volunteerism, in conducting the organization’s largest job fair for military veterans called “Hiring Our Heroes Los Angeles.” The goal was to connect 1,500 veterans and their families with 200 prospective employers.

“We are absolutely thrilled that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will join us in supporting and engaging our nation’s heroes in the workplace and in service,” said ServiceNation Executive Director Greg Propper prior to the event. “We are working to inspire a powerful culture of service in America, and the July 10 hiring fair and service project offers a tremendous advancement in this effort.”

The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry is the Princes’ primary charitable vehicle and has as one of its core aims to raise awareness and support for the Servicemen and women who put their lives on the line for their country. A key part of this focus is assisting efforts to ensure the best possible re-integration and employment of veterans and military families. The Foundation recognizes the tremendous work being done on this in the United States, led by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden through their Joining Forces initiative.

Look To The Stars’ Abhishek Seth recently got to talk with Nick Cannon about his charity work, making the world a better place… and socks.

What got you interested in charity?

I was always taught: “To whom much is given, much is required.” I’ve been blessed tremendously throughout my life — so I have to be a blessing to others. It’s my duty, and I enjoy it.

Is there anyone in particular who has inspired your philanthropy?

I have definitely looked up to so many people that have given way more and done so much, before me. Russell Simmons is someone in my life. And the same with Quincy Jones.

It’s definitely people like them who have shown me the way.

You do a lot of work for DoSomething.org. What about the organization attracted you?

DoSomething.org is the only organization that puts the effort where their mouth is.

It literally gives young people an outlet to do whatever they wanna be a part of. DoSomething gives them direction: It doesn’t just say “Hey, do good,” or “Be a part of charity.” They show you how, and it allows young people to lead by example.

Why should your fans get involved with DoSomething?

Because DoSomething is real—it’s not just an organization to make money. It literally wants young people to get out there, you know—and do something.

It’s young people inspiring young people.

If you were to make a charity for your twins — the Roe-Roc Foundation —what would its main causes be?

I would allow them to make that decision.

That’s one of the reasons why I do give back, and do a lot of philanthropic work. I want to be able to show my children there are many different ways to try to make this world a better place.

That’s one of the main things in life: to leave this place better off than it was before we got here.

So I wanna be able to show my kids everything from feeding the homeless on Holidays, to visiting the sick; to helping to raise money for research for fatal diseases—all of those things.

I wanna be able to say, “Look, there’s tons of things to be a part of, what are you passionate about?”

You currently have several “Nick-branded” organizations. Tell me about them. What is their overriding mission?

My foundations that I have now all surround youth. I’m a youth advocate—an advocate for youth empowerment.

Nick, why do you feel so strongly about young people?

It sounds cliché, but they’re the future—this is the young people’s world. And the Millennials are excited about service, and so I want to continue and empower them.

Fashion is a humongous part of your life, aka #SockSwag. What would be the first few things from your closet, you would auction off for a good cause?

Definitely my socks. (chuckles)

Do you find issue placement—in music videos, tweets, and tweetpics—a useful way to bring awareness to social issues? (Like your pro-life song, Can I Live.)

Absolutely. That’s one of the beauties of music.

Music is community news, really. And to get out there and to be a voice in the huger music—to share stories and change people’s lives. That’s what music ultimately—aside from record sales and charts—is really about: Touching people’s hearts.

Do think artists nowadays are placing issues in their music, or is it a very rare occurrence?

Like I said, the Millennials are more aware right now. They’re excited about making the world a better place, and it’s reflected in music.

Which of your recent work reflects your feelings on world issues?

Probably my stand-up, more than anything.

That’s just the role basic to me, for who I am, and the things that I believe. It’s unfiltered and sometimes, not politically correct, as others may want it to be.

It’s me.

What about the world do you want to improve?

Unity — and the environment. We are all living on the same planet. We should all take care of it.

How do you think we and your fans can become environmentally active?

Honestly, I’m still a believer in the Green Movement—whatever we can do to lower our Carbon Footprint I think is always positive.

Oil for instance. Going back to using hybrid cars, and electric cars. Do things to save energy.

You mentioned unity. What can we all do to become more united?

Our world is a neighborhood. Just embracing each other—instead of trying to force our beliefs on others; let’s just try to understand why other people believe what they believe.

How do you think Hollywood, MTV, and the radio, can help the world’s problems?

Just by reflecting. Just by putting a mirror in front of it: “This is the world, good or bad.”I think that’s a wise thing.

That’s what entertainment should really be about. We don’t have to preach, but we definitely have to be honest, and show what life is about.

Lastly, how do you promote charity among your friends and, of course, with Mariah?

I don’t think you necessarily need to promote it: You just need to do it.

My wife is actually great at that. Mariah does so much philanthropic stuff the world will never know about. She does it because she’s doing it, from the goodness of her heart.

Kevin Jonas To Attend Ronald McDonald House Event

To commemorate October’s National Children’s Health Month, AOL is making a difference for children battling cancer by donating an AOL Media Room to the Ronald McDonald House in New York.

On Friday, October 7, 2011 at 3PM, young cancer patients and their families will gather at the Ronald McDonald House New York’s (RMH-NY) newly renovated AOL Media Room with Kevin Jonas – of the multi-platinum selling, Grammy nominated artists, the Jonas Brothers – to celebrate its unveiling.

Highlights will include:

Total of 15 computers donated with each work station set up for one-on-one tutoring, and group learning scenarios for children in treatment, as well as their siblings staying at the House.
AOL Media Room has been aesthetically renovated to emulate happiness and designed to accommodate the users of the room – children, those in wheelchairs, and their siblings staying at the House.
Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers will be onsite during the ribbon cutting. Kevin is an ambassador and honoree of Variety’s Power of Youth initiative, encouraging young people everywhere to get involved in philanthropic and humanitarian causes.
