Cindy Crawford Feeds The Homeless

Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Love Hewitt were among the stars who helped out at Kirk Douglas’ annual Thanksgiving Meal for the Homeless on Wednesday.

“It’s a great cause,” said actor Ross McCall. “What a wonderful thing that you get to deliver a hot meal to someone who needs it.”

Between 2,500 and 3,000 people benefited from the celebrity meal, which also featured free health checks.

“It’s just about recognizing how fortunate we all are,“ said Crawford. “It’s a way for us to just put our heads in the right state of mind for being truly thankful and it’s great to interact with the guests of the Los Angeles Mission and just be able to serve them a warm meal.”

Hewitt – who is a regular at the annual event – was also full of praise for the work of the Los Angeles Mission, where the event was staged: “What they do all year round, besides just what they do on the holidays, is really inspiring.”

Terry Wogan To Croon For Christmas Charity Single

Veteran British television and radio presenter Terry Wogan has teamed up with Welsh singer Aled Jones to release a Christmas single for charity.

The unlikely duo are raising funds for Children in Need with their version of the Bing Crosby and David Bowie classic ‘Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth’.

“Aled Jones sings like the canary that he is,“ joked 70-year-old Wogan. “But listeners may also detect my croaking in the background and wonder if it’s a rumbling of the stomach!”

Every copy sold will help Children in Need’s total continue to rise above the record-breaking £20,991,216 reached at the end of the epic seven hour BBC1 appeal show held earlier this month, with a minimum of £1 from the sale of each CD single benefiting the charity, as well as a minimum of 20p per download.

“It was a fantastically surreal experience recording at Abbey Road Studios with Terry Wogan and, with tremendous support from the Chris Evans Show, the song is gaining momentum daily,“ said Jones.”I don’t know if this wave of support will take us all the way to Top Of The Pops but we’re having a lot of fun helping raise money for Children in Need.”

The song goes on sale on December 8.

Kirk Douglas will host his annual Thanksgiving Meal for the Homeless on Wednesday, November 26.

Along with his wife, Anne Douglas, and a host of celebrities that will be announced just before the event, the 91-year-old actor will be dishing out meals at the Los Angeles Mission on the corner of Wall Street at 11am.

For over 50 years, the Los Angeles Mission has served the people of Hope Central (known as Skid Row), providing emergency services such as shelter, food, clothing, as well as professional medical and dental services. In addition, the Los Angeles Mission also offers long-term residential rehabilitation programs including education, job training/placement, transitional housing and counseling.

Celebrity guests in the past have included Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Melissa Gilbert, Michael Douglas Minnie Driver, Leeza Gibbons, Sally Kirkland, and Kevin Nealon, all of whom have helped prepare, serve and clear plates. Last year, more than 3,000 people were fed a full course Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

Jerry Decks The Halls For Charity

Model and actress Jerry Hall was in West Norwood, England, on Tuesday to support homeless charity Emmaus by decorating a special Christmas tree.

The 56-year-old hung mini policeman, nurses and teachers on a tree to show how the yearly savings to the taxpayer made by the charity could be spent.

“The charity believes, and I do too, that broken lives can be fixed by restoring in people the sense of their potential,” said Hall, who earlier this year raised $54,600 when she auctioned off some of her most valuable dresses.

Emmaus Communities offer homeless people a home, work and the chance to rebuild their lives in a supportive environment by restoring and selling second hand furniture – in turn taking them off benefits and Government support. There are currently 14 Communities open around the UK and several more in development.

Steve Earle To Play Charity Concerts

Steve Earle is to feature at the annual Christmas Jam to raise money for Habitat For Humanity.

The Grammy award-winning singer will join stars such as Travis Tritt and Joan Osborne over two nights at the Asheville Civic Center Arena, December 12 & 13.

“Christmas Jam started 20 years ago as an opportunity for local musicians to jam at the one time of year they were all in town at the same time,“ said concert organizer, Warren Haynes. “Back then, we gave the money to whatever charity we felt like. As the event grew and we became aware of Habitat For Humanity, we settled on them because we believe in the organization and know the money goes where its supposed to.”

Earle – a regular performer at the Farm Aid concerts over the years – will also play a charity gig for Rock For Reading in Chicago this Saturday, November 22.

Rock For Reading is an organization that uses concerts to raise money to motivate and empower people to learn to read.

British Stars To Climb Kilimanjaro For Comic Relief

Ronan Keating, Gary Barlow and Cheryl Cole are to join a host of other British celebrities to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief next year.

According to reports in Britain’s The Sun newspaper, the stars will join Girls Aloud’s Kimberley Walsh, singer Alesha Dixon, television presenters Fearne Cotton and Ben Shephard, West-End star Denise Van Outen and radio DJ Chris Moyles for the climb up Africa’s highest peak.

“I went to Africa for Comic Relief 18 months ago and the images from that trip have stayed with me and made me want to do something big to make a difference and raise money,” said Take That’s Gary Barlow. “The other people on the climb feel similarly, so it made sense to ask them to join me. I have chosen the people I want to be stuck on the side of a mountain with, even if we are the least likely you would expect to find there.”

4,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro every year, although only 1,400 actually reach the top of the 5,895 meter peak. Around 100 climbers die of altitude sickness on the mountain every year, so it will be no walk in the park for the stars.

“Since visiting Africa with Comic Relief a year ago, I haven’t been able to forget how easy it is for someone in my position to help change the lives of poor and vulnerable people by raising money,” said Kimberly Walsh. “When Gary approached me and Cheryl about doing the climb, I didn’t think twice.”

Sharleen Spiteri Gigs With Autistic Children

Scottish singer Sharleen Spiteri lent her support to Nordoff-Robbins last week when she visited a school that integrates children with autism into classes and provides music therapy as part of their lessons.

The 41-year-old lead singer of Texas played a few tunes for children at Hopefield Primary in Bonnyrigg, Scotland, to raise awareness of music therapy in schools.

“It was great to do a song with the kids playing along on their drums, shakers and bells,“ Spiteri told the Sunday Mail in the UK. “It ended up being a lot easier than some big gigs I’ve done where thousands of fans clap along out of time. That’s an absolute nightmare. Playing to a bunch of kids who were totally into the music was both satisfying and very humbling. But that’s the power of music. I was a total stranger but music brought us together.

“It was interesting to discover how so much of the touchy-feely element of music – the vibrations of hitting a drum or holding an instrument against the skin – meant to the children. That’s what we do as musicians… we go on constantly about feel and rhythm. It was extraordinary to see it actually work for them and hear from their parents how much of a difference music makes to their lives.”

The singer also took part in the BBC Children in Need charity concert on Friday, November 14, which also featured the Sugababes, Boyzone, and many others.

Actress Tamara Tunie was the Honorary Chair of Hearts of Gold’s twelfth fashion show gala, Glitz & Glam, their annual autumn fund raising event “where dazzling models light up the runway in the season’s most eye-catching designs from around the world.”

Hearts of Gold (HoG) supports shelters in the New York City area that provide services to homeless mothers and their children. Proceeds of this event will benefit three NYC shelters that are currently housing 128 families.

Although the financial support goes towards the individual shelters’ needs, HoG’s aim is to get these women living independently. To this end, once families move out of the shelters, HoG continues to support those in need through the critical phase of regaining some stability and control of their lives – self-empowerment is key. Since the causes of homelessness often stem from domestic violence, a lack of basic life skills and joblessness due to a lack of education, HoG strives to address these issues.

The fashion show and auctions at the event raised over $350,000 last year and were expected to exceed that last week.

Yesterday, Look To TheStars brought you news about a new auction featuring James Bond star Daniel Craig’s watch to raise cash for the Children in Need charity. Well, here’s something similar for our younger readers: a whole bunch of stars have given one of the characters of an award-winning children’s TV show a makeover, and they want you to bid for them.

The Spice Girls’ Melanie C, Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson and former Home And Away actress Isla Fisher are among the celebrities who have come up with new designs for Igglepiggle, a central character from In The Night Garden.

The framed and signed designs are up for sale right now over on eBay, and all proceeds will go to the BBC’s Children in Need campaign to help support disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. But hurry, the auction ends on November 12.

Daniel Craig Donates Watch To Charity Auction

A wristwatch belonging to Daniel Craig is being auctioned for Children in Need.

The watch – similar to the one Craig wears as James Bond in the latest 007 film Quantum of Solace – was presented to Jonathan Ross when the Bond star appeared on his talk show.

A lap with Top Gear driver The Stig and tickets to the final of Celebrity Scissorhands are also up for sale in the auction that starts later today, November 10, as are lots of signed Pudsey Bears – the Children In Need mascot – and bandanas, signed items from BBC Dramas such as Casualty and Holby City, and some props from the popular BBC series, The Apprentice.

Last year’s auction raised US$55,000 to help support disadvantaged children and young people across the UK and included items such as Rio Ferdinand signed football boots, a BBC Weather experience, and a stick of celery signed by Peter Davison as Doctor Who.

Jonas Brothers To Launch the 2008 Red Kettle Campaign

On November 27th, the Jonas Brothers will become the latest in the long line of artists to kick off The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.

The band is excited to perform at halftime during the Dallas Cowboys’ nationally televised Thanksgiving Day game against the Seattle Seahawks, with Nick Jonas saying, “I was born in Dallas, which makes performing with my brothers at the Cowboys’ halftime on Thanksgiving an incredible honor.”

“This year, more than ever, the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign will make a huge impact for families at Christmas and throughout the year. It’s very important for us to give back,” Joe Jonas added.

The campaign has raised more than $1 billion since its partnership with the football team began back in 1997. Funds raised help the Salvation Army serve 30 million people each year nationwide, with last year’s campaign raising a record $118 million.

Hilary Duff Counts Her Blessings In A Backpack

Hilary Duff has been busy in the last two weeks visiting schools to raise awareness of the Blessings in a Backpack initiative.

Blessings in a Backpack was launched in 2005 to provide food to children and families in need. Since been established, they have provided over 6 million meals, with food being distributed through a network of volunteers and school officials on Fridays before the children leave school for the weekend. 21-year-old star Hilary Duff first helped with the campaign following Hurricane Katrina when – along with USA Harvest – she donated over 2 million meals throughout the Gulf Coast.

“I feel lucky enough to have a voice or a name that people might pay attention to,“ said Duff. “I think that people might not be aware that a couple neighborhoods away, kids aren’t having food on the weekends, and we just want people to be informed and to know what’s going on in their communities and to help if they can.”

Richard Branson's Rock The Kasbah Event Tonight

For once, Sir Richard Branson will not be on stage at his Virgin Unite charity’s Rock The Kasbah event in Los Angeles later tonight, October 23. The business mogul and adventurer is sea-bound in a bid to beat a transatlantic sailing record.

The event will instead be hosted by _Dancing With The Stars_’ Samantha Harris and will feature performances by Natalie Imbruglia and Island Def Jam recording artist Jon McLaughlin.

The night will include a Moroccan dinner and an auction of epic proportions that will include items such as the chance to stay at Branson’s luxury game park in South Africa, race an Astin Martin around the California, name one of Virgin’s new A320 Airbuses, spend a week on Branson’s Private Paradise in the Virgin Islands, and much more.

Proceeds from the evening will go to Virgin Unite’s domestic and international programs, including the Eve Branson Foundation, set up by Sir Richard’s mother to help women in Morocco generate their own incomes to support their families, and the REGeneration initiative in the US, which helps homeless young people.

Last year’s Rock The Kasbah event – which Sir Richard described as “one of the best parties I’ve ever been to” – was attended by a who’s who of the celebrity world, including Jewel, Rachel Hunter, and Buzz Aldrin.

High Hopes For Pink Floyd Charity Auction

Pink Floyd fans listen up: a guitar signed by all of the members of the band – including David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and the late Richard Wright – is up for auction for charity.

The auction – to celebrate the launch of Graham Scarfe’s book, ‘Scarfe of the Wall’, which describes the creation of the artwork for Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall – is now on at BuyOnceGiveTwice.co.uk, and will raise money for Crisis, a charity that fights homelessness.

The guitar comes with a book signed by Roger Waters, and the auction runs until October 31. The current bid sits at £4800 (US$8,313).

Kirk Douglas Receives Honor For Playground Work

Kirk Douglas has been honored for his work improving children’s playgrounds across Los Angeles.

The 91-year-old received the Good News Makers of the Year Award with his wife, Anne, at the annual High Flying Fundraiser luncheon held by the Good News Foundation last week.

The Douglases’ interest in improving LA’s playgrounds started in 1997, when Anne Douglas learnt of the deplorable condition of Los Angeles’ public school playgrounds. Along with her husband, Anne established the Anne & Kirk Douglas Playground Award to provide assistance to the Los Angeles Unified School District to enhance their schools’ outdoor and recreational spaces. The award supports and encourages Los Angeles public school communities in creating playgrounds that will be the keystones of campus revitalization and give the city’s children the fulfilling experiences and opportunities they deserve.

Kirk Douglas – who suffered a stroke in 1996 that has affected his ability to speak – volunteers at the Los Angeles Mission every Thanksgiving, and earlier this month spoke to communicative disorder students in Cal State Long Beach about speech therapy, life, show biz and surviving a stroke.

“When you have a stroke, you must speak slowly to be understood,” he said. “And I discovered that, when I speak slowly, people listen. They think I’m going to say something important.”

Douglas will also receive an honor at the Ambassadors for Humanity Gala Dinner on October 22.

Warrick Dunn To Host Fundraiser Tonight

The Sixth Annual Warrick Dunn Foundation Gala will be held tonight, October 13, in Atlanta.

American football legend Warrick Dunn will be joined by former and current NFL teammates to raise money for his charity – which he established after his mother was shot to death in 1993 – to help struggling single parents buy their own homes.

“Despite Warrick’s move from the Atlanta Falcons to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers there is still a need for the Foundation’s assistance in Georgia,” said Natalie Boe, Warrick Dunn Foundation Executive Director. “We look forward to continuing our support of the greater Atlanta area.”

The evening will include live musical performances, a live and silent auction (including a Super Bowl XLIII package), Macy’s Fashion Extravaganza and much more.

Earlier this year, Dunn joined a host of professional athletes – such as Andre Agassi, Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Jeff Gordon, Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk, Andrea Jaeger, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mario Lemieux, Alonzo Mourning, and Cal Ripken Jr. – to found Athletes For Hope, a charitable organization which helps professional athletes get involved in charitable causes and inspires millions of non-athletes to volunteer and support the community.

Brad Pitt Makes It More Right

Brad Pitt has announced that his Make It Right Foundation has raised enough money to build 90 new homes in New Orleans.

The star only expected to raise enough to build 84 homes by this stage in the project, but due to unprecedented support from the public, there is enough to create 6 more houses in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged area of the Lower Ninth Ward.

Pitt followed the announcement by visiting the area with his wife, Angelina Jolie, and children Maddox, 7, and Pax, 5, to view his housing project on Tuesday.

The actor hopes to raise enough cash to build 150 homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, with an emphasis on affordability and eco-awareness.

Taylor Swift Teams With Def Leppard For TV Gig

On October 6, a very special fusion of musical styles will take place in Nashville when teen country sensation Taylor Swift joins with classic British rockers Def Leppard for a one-off gig for TV. And although the event is invitation-only and closed to the public, they really want you to be there.

Swift and the Leppards have organized a charity auction that will let two couples attend the taping of Crossroads, with proceeds going to Country Music Television’s (CMT) One Country charity, Hands On Nashville.

“Every time I’ve seen ‘Crossroads’ on CMT I’ve always thought, ‘If I ever get to do one of those, it HAS to be with Def Leppard!,’ so this is really a dream come true for me,” said Swift. “I have been screaming the words to Def Leppard songs for years so it’s amazing that I’m going to get to share a stage with them this year!”

Celebrities Support In My Name

will.i.am has worked with more than thirty other celebrities and activists to create an inspiring short film titled Be the Generation, part of the In My Name campaign to end poverty.

The film, which can be viewed at the White Band Action website, explains how people can end poverty in our lifetime if leaders are held accountable to their promises. It is part of a campaign organized by White Band Action ahead of next week’s emergency UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals in New York, and a host of activists and celebrities – including Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu , Annie Lennox, John Legend, Rahul Bose, Angélique Kidjo, Scarlett Johansson, Missy Higgins, Emmanuel Jal, Wyclef Jean, Kristin Davis, Fergie and Mischa Barton – have come together for the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) to challenge their leaders to keep their promise to halve poverty by 2015.

Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am has also penned a song for the campaign titled In My Name, which calls on world citizens to exercise their power and demand their governments keep their promises to the worlds poor. The song will be downloadable free of charge from September 25.

“We can be the generation that ends poverty,” said will.i.am. “Politicians promised in 2000 to halve poverty in 15 years. They made this pledge in my name, now they must act to achieve it.”

“Governments must be held accountable for their people and their promises,” added Lennox.

To drive the message home, Kidjo and will.iam will perform ‘In My Name’ live outside the UN buildings in New York on 25 September. They will be joined by Queen Rania of Jordan, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon, Ela Bhatt, Mary Robinson, Kristin Davis, Rahul Bose and activists from Africa, Asia and Latin America who will be amongst the first to sign their names to the “In My Name” pledge wall.

”If I put my name to something it means I am committed to its outcome,“ said Angelique Kidjo. “I want to see this sort of response from leaders and others with power to effect change. People living in poverty have waited too long and want to see tangible changes in their lives immediately.”

The White Band Action initiative is a global collaboration between the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, Oxfam, Save the Children, and Comic Relief. It is not being run by any single organization, which demonstrates the breadth of commitment to ending poverty and inequality.

“The time for action has never been more urgent,“ said Queen Rania. “Rising food prices have plunged 100 million more people into poverty, and the economic slowdown risks eroding political support for development.“

“We’re half way there, and thanks to people’s efforts and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, there has been real progress,“ added Kristin Davis. “There are more children in school. More people are getting essential medicines. But 30,000 children still die every day because of poverty.”

Teen stars Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens have designed T-shirts for a charity lifestyle brand.

Launched in 2003, 2 LOVE is an initiative that endorses “a message of love while benefiting charities that elevate lives through a range of celebrity-designed products. The company inspires young women to love themselves, and in turn spread the love to others. Their unique marketing initiative – designed to empower women and promote philanthropy – has struck a chord among Hollywood’s A-listers, who have signed on in droves to join the 2 LOVE mission”.

Those A-listers include Monique Coleman, Alyssa Milano, Ashanti, Molly Sims, Mischa Barton, Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, Mariska Hargitay, Alison Sweeney, Mena Suvari, and Michelle Branch, all of whom have designed products to raise money for charities such as Best Buddies International, the 1736 Family Crisis Center, UNICEF, the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Joyful Hearts, Step Up, and more.

As well as celeb-designed T-shirts, 2 LOVE is also soon to launch celeb-designed cosmetics, and next year will feature a fashion collection designed by costume designers from Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and many more hit shows.

Stars Become Brokers For BGC Charity Day

BGC will hold its 4th Annual Global Charity Day on Thursday 11th September.

Consistent with its theme, “Working Globally – Giving Locally”, BGC’s offices around the world will raise money for charity as they commemorate September 11 by reaching out to help others.

In New York, London, Paris, Sydney and Hong Kong, celebrities from the worlds of music, stage, screen and sport will join the company’s brokers to help raise money for a number of selected charities. All of BGC’s global revenues generated from the day’s trading will be donated to charity.

Events will take place around the globe, with celebrities becoming stock brokers for a day. In New York, stars such as Tony Sirico, Donald Trump, Steve Buscemi, Regis Philbin, Matthew Modine, Leighton Meester, and Scott Gomez will become traders on Wall Street, while in London, Prince Charles will join Kevin Spacey and Jerry Hall in the City to trade on the markets.

Charities that will benefit from this year’s Charity Day will include: Barnardo’s, Breast Cancer Care, Scope, the Jodie Kidd Foundation, the Prince’s Trust, Baby Buggy, the Rainbow Trust, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Variety Club, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Valerie Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, Nordoff-Robbins, and many more.

Brad Pitt Partners With Kiehl’s For The Environment

If you are one of the many women who claim Brad Pitt and luxury beauty brand Kiehl’s as two of your favorite things, you are in luck!

Mega movie star, philanthropist, and father of six Brad Pitt has teamed up with Kiehl’s to create the brand’s first 100% eco-friendly product. Kiehl’s Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser will hit stores at $16.50 a bottle in October and be a permanent addition to the brand’s renowned line of products. One hundred percent of the proceeds from sales of the body wash will go towards JPF Eco Systems, a new non-profit launched by Pitt and Kiehl’s. The mission of the new charity is to “minimize impact on the environment through thoughtful design.”

The body cleanser will be packaged in recycled plastic and consist of all-natural ingredients like aloe vera, coconut, and glycerin. The formula is free of environmental foes like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, and dyes. The bottle’s label will include a reproduced hand-written note from Pitt himself, though Pitt will not be appearing in any advertisements for the product. The cleanser will be available at Kiehl’s stores, department store counters, and online.

Commenting on the lack of print advertisements bearing Pitt’s famous face, Kiehl’s senior VP of Global Marketing, Roberta Weiss, told WWD, “Brad is not a face, he’s a partner. We shared a vision, to support this new way of thinking – being more eco-intelligent.”

WWD estimates that the product will raise $1 million for JPF Eco Systems and its initiatives, which include supporting Make It Right, Pitt’s New Orleans-based charity that builds green homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
