Sex And The City Star Voices Concern Over Hungry Children In New Zealand

Sex and the City boy toy Jason Lewis has been busy running around the globe promoting the much-anticipated film, but he hasn’t lost sight of what’s really important – helping to raise money and awareness for those in need of our help.

In April, Lewis was in New Zealand on a charity visit for the KidsCan Charitable Trust. He hosted the charity party for KidsCan, and also auctioned off a private breakfast to raise funds for the organization.

And he strongly adheres to the belief that celebrity and politics do mix.

“I’m not a brain surgeon, I’m not curing cancer, but if I can show up and do an interview and that is going to raise awareness and someone’s going to give more money to the hardworking people of this charity, great,” says Lewis. “I think it is the best use of celebrity that is out there. You look at Bono. He is kicking arse over most of the politicians.”

He also spoke out against New Zealand Labour MP Parekura Horomia’s remarks about children who are missing breakfast in order to lose weight.

“That is one of the more ignorant statements I have ever heard out of a politician’s mouth,” Lewis said. “They are children, they’re hungry. What kid’s trying to diet to go to school? [It’s] really ridiculously ignorant. Someone should vote you out.”

When Lewis was done ripping on the MP, he commented on his personal inspirations. “When I was young people were famous for doing something, and now fame in itself is its own commodity, and not for the greatest reasons, the role modeling is getting very obscure. They are seeing so much crap and they’re identifying with it. My heroes were like Paul Newman and Steven Spielberg, and these guys are really something special – not like the Britneys and Paris Hiltons.”

Big Names Flock to 7th Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball

On Saturday May 31, stars converged at a private estate in Brentwood California to attend the 7th Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball. Each year, Chrysalis helps more than 2,300 men and women transition from poverty, regain their dignity, and radically change their lives through jobs. And the impressive celebrity turnout speaks volumes to the good work being done by Chrysalis.

Rebecca Gayheart-Dane and her ‘McSteamy’ husband Eric Dane were the first couple to arrive.

“I feel very honored to be part of Chrysalis and that I get to do the work that I do,” said Rebecca Gayheart-Dane before the event. “It’s a great cause and this community has been so supportive and I so appreciate it.”

Eric Dane was equally impressed with his wife’s work as a co-chair member: “Every year I marvel at the commitment and the dedication and the time she puts aside for this event,” he told the media.

Charlie Sheen and his new wife Brooke Mueller made their first public appearance as a married couple, just one day after the two exchanged vows in front of about 60 close friends and family. The “Two and a Half Men” star and real estate developer were engaged last summer after meeting at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in 2006.

Among the list of stars supporting the cause and creating a media frenzy during arrivals were Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Kate Walsh, Katherine Heigl, Eva Mendes, Mila Kunis, Amaury Nolasco, Brett Ratner, Jason Lewis, T.R. Knight, Justin Chambers, Jason Bateman, and the night’s emcee, Chris Kattan.

“The charity is certainly worth while,“ said Bateman from the red carpet. “I love this – instead of just throwing money at something, you actually give them a very proactive tool to eliminate their problem of homelessness.”

Chris Kattan was proud to play host for the evening, as he is a regular supporter of Chrysalis: “I think it’s a great cause to help the homeless situation here. I’ve been here four years in a row now.”

All proceeds from the Butterfly Ball directly fund Chrysalis employment programs, and this years’ event is said to have raised close to one million dollars for the organization.

Celebrities Gather For Global Green Pre-Oscar Party

Celebrities, artists, actors, industry executives, and environmentalists joined Global Green USA CEO Matt Petersen for the 5th Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party last Wednesday, February 20, at the Avalon Nightclub in Hollywood.

The theme of this year’s event was “Time To Act: Reduce your Carbon Footprint today: Drive Green, Live Green, Vote Green”. The evening, emceed by HBO’s ‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher, raised $420,000 to benefit Global Green’s climate change initiatives, which include the green rebuilding of New Orleans.

“There are a lot of people in this town who talk a lot about (the issue), but these guys (Global Green) are actually doing something,” said Maher, who arrived at the event in a hybrid SUV. Special performances by Grammy Nominated artist Michelle Branch, Oscar nominated artists Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, as well as Damien Rice and Michael Franti, were among the night’s highlights.

Salma Hayek, who serves on the local Global Green board, showed her support and said she is more focused on environmental initiatives since becoming a mother last September.

“I get a bigger fear of what kind of world she’s going to live in,” said Hayek on her way into the party. “Is she going to run out of water? What kind of water is she going to drink? It’s really scary and it’s not that far away if we don’t do something about it.”

Other celebrity supporters in attendance included Oliver Stone, Entourage actor Adrian Grenier, Sophia Bush, actress Dana Delany, Las Vegas star Molly Sims, Josie Maran, Mia Maestro, actor Christian Slater, Governor Bill Richardson, Radha Mitchell, Lost actor Ian Somerhalder, actor-turned-model Jason Lewis, Alexis Arquette, Eric Mabius, Anna Getty, Bahar Soomekh, Tate Donovan, Esai Morales, Norman Lear, Julie Benz, Kevin Weisman, Lady Victoria Hervey, Leonor Varela, Mark DeCarlo, Tamara Mellon, Q’orianka Kilcher, Vanessa Branch, Walton Goggins, Elisabeth Rohm, Tia Carrere, Taylor Dayne, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Kenneth Johnson.

This election year, Global Green USA used the party to highlight their 2008 message of “Drive Green. Live Green. Vote Green.”

“Our homes and transportation represent the biggest opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint – but the most important thing to green this year is our vote,” said Global Green CEO Matt Petersen. “The next President of the United States has the power to solve the climate crisis; they will only be successful if the public – and the media – demand action on climate change.”

Elton's Oscar Party Raises $5.1m

Sunday night saw the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 16th annual Academy Awards viewing party, which this year raised $5.1 million thanks to its spectacular guest list.

The Pacific Design Center venue saw even more of Hollywood’s glitterati than anticipated, boasting the attendance of “Best Actress” award winner Marion Cotillard and “Best Supporting Actor” nominee Tom Wilkinson. Further top names present included Amy Adams, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi, Sean Penn, Patricia Clarkson, Calista Flockhart and Harrison Ford, Josh Groban, Faye Dunaway, Sean Combs, Seal and Heidi Klum, Prince, Kate Beckinsale, Billy Joel, Courtney Love, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Petra Nemcova, Jeremy Piven, Roberto Cavalli, Minnie Driver, Simon Cowell and Herbie Hancock.

The gala was co-hosted by Elton’s partner David Furnish, and included dinner, a musical performance by Elton himself and a live auction.

Sharon Stone acted as auctioneer, and Elton offered to remove his trousers if it would raise more money. Stone added that she wouldn’t follow suit.

Yet more stars seen at the event included Natasha Henstridge, Larry King, Eric McCormack, Jason Lewis, Jonny Lee Miller, Brett Ratner, Jason Reitman, Rupert Murdoch, Jennifer Coolidge, Russell Simmons, Cheryl Tiegs, John Waters and Ziyi Zhang.

Since its inception in 1992, Elton’s foundation has raised more than $125 million to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs in 55 countries.
