Celebrities To Wear Purple For Spirit Day

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will join millions of lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and allies by participating in Spirit Day and wearing purple on October 20, 2011.

Wearing purple on this day symbolizes support for LGBT people and against bullying of LGBT teens.

GLAAD is working with organizations including the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the PACER Center, GLSEN, GSA Network, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), PFLAG and The Trevor Project as part of National Bullying Prevention Month to inspire Americans to wear purple on Spirit Day.

Celebrity Judges For Best In Drag Charity Show

The outrageous beauty pageant spoof, “Best In Drag Show” – a benefit for Aid For AIDS in California – returns to The Orpheum Theatre on October 9, 2011.

The highly anticipated, annual fundraiser will be opened by comedienne Kathy Griffin and has a hilarious cast of drag contestants who compete in traditional beauty and talent categories. The legendary show always has a roster of celebrity judges – this year including Wayne Brady, Melanie Gritffith, Harry Hamlin, Vanessa Williams, Rita Wilson, Kim Coles, Dot Marie Jones, Sara Ramirez and Lisa Rinna – and the benefit has raised millions of dollars for Aid For AIDS, which was founded in 1983. Each year the show raises more than $250,000 in one night.

The fundraiser is produced by a large group of extremely dedicated and talented volunteers with a small staff from Alliance for Housing and Healing – the non-profit parent corporation of Aid For AIDS, executive producer of the show. This year, Aid For AIDS will be hosting a special VIP Reception for top-level sponsors. A celebrity red carpet and colorful pre-show cocktail party with costumed contestant “fans” begin at 6 PM. Curtain is 7 PM.

On Saturday night, GLAAD honored the media’s most outstanding images of the LGBT community at the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco, presented nationally by ROKK Vodka and locally by Southwest Airlines. Advocates, allies and celebrities joined host Naya Rivera (Glee) at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis to celebrate the people and stories that are moving Americans toward equality for all.

Kiki Shepard has spent the past 17 years helping to raise awareness for sickle cell disease.

A carrier of the sickle cell trait herself, Shepard hosted the 7th annual celebrity bowling challenge last week to benefit the programs of The K.I.S. Foundation and The Dorothy H. Shepard Scholarship Fund. The event took place at the PINZ Entertainment Center in Studio City, California.

Many of Shepard’s long time supporters and friends came out to participate in the bowling challenge – including Dawn Lewis (formerly of A Different World) and Obba Babatundé (Board Members), James Pickens, Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy), Jacké Harry (Sister, Sister), Vanessa Bell Calloway (The District), and Rocky Caroll (NCIS: Los Angeles). Some new faces included Wayne Brady, Quinton Aaron (The Blind Side), Sara Ramirez and Jesse Williams (both cast members of Grey’s Anatomy).

The American Red Cross unveiled their 7th annual National Celebrity Cabinet yesterday, February 28, with 15 new members from movies, sports, and television.

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk will join former Beverly Hills 90210 and Dancing With The Stars alum Jennie Garth, Heroes’ Masi Oka, Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, House M.D.’s Lisa Edelstein and Kal Penn, Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, Everyone Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, Hairspray’s Brittany Snow, two-time NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, New York Yankee Robinson Cano, NFL star Matt Leinart, and Life Coach Iyanla Vanzant in the 2008 Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, part of a mobilizing force to urge people to perform extraordinary life-saving acts in dire circumstances through the assistance of the Red Cross.

“I am extremely honored to participate in the Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, especially at a time when we have the ability to do so much for people around the world who have endured such tragedies,” said new member Jennie Garth. “The Red Cross brings help and hope to those in need and has done tremendous good for so many different people on a global level. I believe this is a time when we can educate others and the Red Cross allows for the opportunity for each individual to contribute to the effort. I am grateful that I am able be part of this amazing organization.”
