DoSomething.org Announces Top 20 Celebs Gone Good 2011

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, released today its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born This Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber, up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

Sophia Bush To Run San Francisco Marathon For Nature Charity

Actress and passionate environmentalist Sophia Bush will be using her feet to raise money to protect the planet this summer as a member of Team Nature Conservancy- she’ll be running in the San Francisco Marathon taking place July 31, 2011.

“A green, clean future for our nation and for our world matters. Nature is the source of clean air, fresh water and healthy food. Join me as I run for The Nature Conservancy,” she said. "I’m thrilled to partner with The Nature Conservancy in the San Francisco Marathon to help protect our amazing planet.

“I’ve never been shy about my love of nature. Not only is it outrageously beautiful, nature supports all life. When I’m outside running and stop to grab a drink of water, it’s easy to forget that we need healthy streams, rivers and forests to keep our water fresh. That the food we eat actually comes from productive farm fields with rich, fertile soil. Or most importantly for me, that when I stop to catch my breath it’s nature that purifies the air we breathe. The simple truth is a healthy planet is what allows us to be healthy people. And it all begins with protecting nature.”

The eMission Facebook game requires that gamers take real-life actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as changing light bulbs to energy efficient ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs or running a recycling drive at school, to advance to higher levels.

DoSomething.org is teaming with environmental activist and actress Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill), who encourages teens in a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) to take a break from building their farm towns and fighting crime lords and instead play a game that involves taking online and offline actions to help the environment and increase energy efficiency.

Eva Longoria To Launch TwitChange Celebrity Charity Auction

Eva Longoria has taken to Twitter to encourage her celebrity friends to support charity.

The Desperate Housewives superstar has enlisted the help of the stars to launch TwitChange, a massive online auction that will hit the Net on September 15. The idea is simple: TwitChange is the only global celebrity auction where Twitter users can bid to get three things: be followed by their favorite celebrity on Twitter, retweeted, or mentioned by them in a special tweet!

All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide AHomeInHaiti.org the means to finish rebuilding the Miriam Center. The Miriam Center houses, educates and loves on Haitian children with cerebral palsy, severe autism, and other major life challenges and is one of the only facilities of its kind in Haiti. The current facility houses children in the earthquakeʼs aftermath and is extremely overcrowded. These kids need and deserve a permanent home.

Sophia Bush To Run Half Marathon For Charity

Sophia Bush has announced a special charity challenge to raise money to assist the clean-up following the Gulf oil spill.

“I am going to run a half marathon this November,” she wrote on her blog. "Yup. Me. The asthmatic with a years-old knee injury, who hasn’t run a mile since Junior High. No seriously. Since Junior High, as in since I was 13 years old. For the record I am now 28, but thanks to the genes of my kick ass parents (I love you Mom and Dad!) I still get carded when I buy beer for BBQs at the grocery store. Yay for me!

“Why would I do this to myself, you ask? Or is that me asking? I’ve been asking myself that question a lot since last Tuesday when I decided to do this. The ‘why’ is the Gulf. And it’s also you guys, really. I got the idea from the King of Crowdrise himself, Edward Norton, who ran the New York City marathon last year to raise money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, a charity that stole my heart many years ago and still has a firm grip on it. Now, I make no claim to be anywhere near as tough as Ed, but I am determined. And in bouncing creative fundraising ideas off of some pals at work in North Carolina, I mentioned Ed’s marathon, and my friend Jane said, “Well, you know there’s a half marathon here in November.” I promptly laughed in her face.

Ethan Suplee Supports Text For Tigers Charity Campaign

World Wildlife Fund’s Texting for Tigers promotion launched yesterday, giving people the ability to aid in saving wild tigers from extinction through their mobile phones.

By texting “TIGERS” to 20222 from a cell phone, a $10 donation will be made to support WWF’s efforts to protect tigers. With as few as 3,200 tigers left in the wild, down from around 100,000 a century ago, the species is one of the most threatened on the planet. WWF’s goal is to double the global tiger population by 2022.
