Former Presidents Join With Royalty For Celebrity Charity Day

BGC Partners Inc, a leading global brokerage company primarily servicing the wholesale financial markets, has announced that, together with Cantor Fitzgerald, it raised approximately $12 million globally at their Annual Charity Day on Monday, September 12, 2011.

Every year, BGC and Cantor Fitzgerald donate 100% of their global revenues on the day to more than 75 charities around the world by hosting charities and celebrity ambassadors at their offices in commemoration of the 658 employees we lost in the World Trade Center attacks. The guests joined licensed brokers to conduct transactions with BGC and Cantor Fitzgerald clients. Including today, Charity Day has raised approximately $77 million globally.

BGC Partners was honored to be joined by many distinguished guests including President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton in New York and His Royal Highness Prince Harry in London. Prince Harry broke the world record set by his brother HRH Prince William for the largest foreign currency trade when he closed a foreign exchange deal worth euro 18 billion. Prince Harry, who attended on behalf of Sentebale, the charity he founded to support vulnerable children and orphans in Lesotho, completed the deal between Barclays London and a European counter-party based on projected currency values between the 13th and 14th September.

Stars To March For Babies This Weekend

More than 900 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and a host of celebrities will take part this weekend in March for Babies, the premier fundraising event for the March Of Dimes.

March for Babies supports cutting-edge research and community-based programs that help moms have full-term, healthy babies. March for Babies has been held annually since 1970, and the event has raised a combined total of $1.8 billion to help all babies get a healthy start in life. The goal for this year’s event is to raise more than $106 million.

“Funds raised in March for Babies not only support our efforts to give all babies a healthy start in life, we fund programs that bring comfort and information to families of babies born too sick or soon,” said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. “More than 7 million people, including celebrities, sports stars, and families of babies born sick or prematurely are involved in March for Babies as volunteers, sponsors and participants. Participants can either walk as an individual or join a team with co-workers, family or friends by visiting marchforbabies.org.”

Eli Manning To Be Honored At Young Women's Leadership Network Event

New York Giants Quarterback and 2008 Super Bowl winner Eli Manning will be among the honorees at the Young Women’s Leadership Network’s 10th Anniversary Celebration for Collegebound Initiative (CBI) next month.

CBI is a program of Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN), a 501©3 organization that helps low income youth to break the cycle of poverty through education. CBI places full-time college guidance counselors in schools to work with every student. Since inception, CBI has helped over 4,000 young men and women achieve their higher education dreams with a 95% annual college acceptance track record. Additionally, CBI has generated more than $48 million in scholarships and grants for our students to make college affordable. YWLN also supports The Young Women’s Leadership Schools, a network of five all-girls public schools in New York City and Philadelphia with affiliate schools nationwide.

CBI is a life-changing college guidance program working in 13 high-need public high schools in New York City and Philadelphia. The achievement gap in college enrollment is strongly correlated with economic status and race/ethnicity, with low-income, minority students most vulnerable to being denied college access. CBI successfully tackles these problems by providing early college awareness activities, personalized counseling, and application, financial aid, enrollment, and alumni support. The students CBI serves attain four-year college degrees at significantly higher rates than their low-income, minority peers.

David Beckham, Bono, Annie Lennox and Carrie Underwood have all accepted cheques from April’s Idol Gives Back event on behalf of the charities they support.

The show raised over US$67 million for charities such as the Global Fund, Malaria No More, the Children’s Health Fund, Save the Children, and the Children’s Defense Fund.

“I saw first hand with my visit to Sierra Leone with UNICEF last year how devastating malaria can be to a country,” said Beckham, who was presented with US$12 million by Idol winner David Cook on behalf of Malaria No More. “This money will help buy millions of bed nets and also protect many people, particularly the young children who are most vulnerable.”

New York Giants' Michael Strahan Hosts Charity Golf Tournament

The Michael Strahan & Dreier LLP Charity Golf Tournament is set to kick off on June 29 with a gala pairings party at TAO Restaurant in midtown Manhattan, which will include a private concert featuring a Grammy Award-winning performer, and auctions to benefit abused and neglected children in the New York area and children suffering from AIDS in Africa.

“Hosting this event is a great way for us to give back and help improve the lives of children,” stated Mr. Strahan. “Helping kids is the most important thing about this event.”

Proceeds from this year’s auction of sports memorabilia and the celebrity golf tournament will benefit Children’s Rights, a watchdog organization that advocates on behalf of abused and neglected children in the United States, and Keep A Child Alive, which provides medical care and life-saving drugs for African children suffering from AIDS.

Idol Gives Back On Wednesday

It will be raining philanthropic celebrities on Wednesday night when American Idol Gives Back airs on the Fox Network. The “star clouds” are set to burst with a gala of music, fun, appearances, and surprises – all in the name of charity.

Idol host Ryan Seacrest will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which was taped in front of a lively audience at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and producers expect this year’s event to raise over $100 million for charity.

“Tonight isn’t just about raising money,” said Brad Pitt, one of the many guests to attend the gala. “Sometimes, to help people, we’ve got to travel outside of our comfort zone to really understand another situation.”
