Red Hot Chili Peppers To Play Intimate Show For Charity

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform a rare and intimate club show on August 24 at LA Live’s Club Nokia to benefit the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.

Flea – bassist for the Chilis – co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001 to facilitate music education by providing affordable or free lessons and instruments. The Conservatory’s eight classrooms are filled with instruments, teachers and students, with instruction, discussion, laughter and, of course, lots of music. Chilis singer Anthony Kiedis sits on the Board of Directors.

“To direct the energy of that work to help out the school which I believe in with intensity and have nurtured for the past ten years is a transcendent double doozy of greatness!” says Flea. “We are going to rock our balls off for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, like a pack of wild animals!”

Stars To Attend Sea Shepherd Charity Event

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will host a star-studded celebrity red carpet benefit on Saturday, October 23, to defend, conserve and protect the seas.

Captain Paul Watson, President of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and star of “Whale Wars” on Discovery Networks’ Animal Planet will commence their most daring campaign, Operation No Compromise, as well as introduce their new, fast interceptor vessel that will join their fleet this winter to Antarctica.
Flea Launches Charity Fundraising Page On Crowdrise

Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea has started a charity fundraising page on Edward Norton’s Crowdrise, and is offering a prize of a signed bass guitar to one lucky donator.

“I started the Silverlake Conservatory of Music along with a couple of my friends about 10 years ago (2001),” writes Flea. "Music has been my life for as long as I can remember. When I was in high school, I was in the orchestra, marching band and musical production band. Anything to keep myself involved.

“A few years back, I had the opportunity to visit my old high school and noticed how many of the music programs were cut from when I was there. There were barely any instruments left and the music room was essentially bare. I quickly realized that there was something I could do to help out and that’s when I started the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. The mission of the Conservatory is to facilitate basic music education for the youth of the community (ages 7-17) but all are welcome and encouraged to participate.

It's Business Time For The Flight Of The Conchords

Grammy award-winning comedy duo Flight of the Conchords are part of a huge new auction being run to raise cash for charity.

The Conchords shot to fame in 2007 when their quirky television series debuted on HBO and immediately received ratings and critical acclaim. Originally from New Zealand, the duo uses a mix of music and comedy to make witty and deadpan observations on society. Their new series starts next month.

Now – as part of the annual Grammy Charities Auction – you have the chance to bid on an acoustic guitar, DVD and CD signed by “New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.”

Metallica, Scars on Broadway Perform for Silverlake Conservatory

Wednesday, May 14, will see Metallica perform at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles to benefit the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Joining the iconic heavy-metal band at the fundraising concert will be Scars On Broadway, fronted by Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan from the band System of a Down.

100% of all ticket sales will go directly to the support of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, but you gotta act fast if you want to be part of the celebration, only 2,200 guests will be admitted.

The Silverlake Conservatory of Music (SCM), was founded in 2001 by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, and Keith Barry, who feel that “that the study of music enriches not only the life of the musician, but the community and society as well.” It serves to foster music education among low-income students. The school’s summer camp program and new building initiative will also benefit from the proceeds of the concert.

Flea's Musical Dream

When costs are cut in the educational system, the arty subjects always suffer the most – and so do the pupils. Literature is an important foundation to creating dreams, mathematics allows people to put all the dreams together in logical and strikingly illogical forms, and music creates the melody and spin for the dreams.

To help make the dreams come true, Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea joined Keith “Tree” Barry to establish the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001. Situated on Sunset Boulevard, the non-profit institution offers private lessons in most instruments to children and adults at reasonable prices, and also provides funding for those who cannot afford it.

There is a “20-Peace Orchestra”, where Duke Ellingtons-in-training can get a taste of classical, pops, big band, and Brazilian sounds. The Funk All-Stars Workshop lets students channel their inner James Browns with grooving jam sessions, and the Youth Chorale gives pint-sized singers the chance to learn harmonization and different styles of singing. The conservatory boasts eight air-conditioned studios so students can work up a cramp-free sweat while they jam, and there is also a recital area for clinics and performances – just in case that inner performance diva needs to break free.

Neil Young Organizes Benefit Concert

Musician Neil Young is to host his annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts near San Francisco on October 27-28, with an eclectic lineup of acts already confirmed to play.

The two acoustic concerts, to be held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, will feature performers such as John Mayer, Metallica, and Pearl Jam singer, Eddie Vedder. Tom Waits will also perform with the classical string ensemble, The Kronos Quartet. Waits and the Quartet first performed together earlier in 2007, as part of a concert to benefit Richard Gere’s Healing the Divide Foundation.

Proceeds from the October shows will benefit Bridge School, a non-profit educational institution in Northern California for children with physical disabilities and severe speech impediments. It was co-founded by Young’s wife, Pegi, in 1986, after three of the couple’s children were born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Young organized the first Bridge School Concert in 1986, and with the exception of 1987, has hosted the event every year since.
