On February 11, 2011, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF honored two individuals – Frida Giannini, Gucci Creative Director, and Carrie Auer, UNICEF Representative in Malawi – who have made key contributions to UNICEF’s mission to save and improve children’s lives worldwide.

The awards were bestowed at the inaugural Women of Compassion Luncheon at the home of Colleen & Bradley Bell. Actress, recording artist and UNICEF advocate Jennifer Lopez presented Giannini with this special award.

Also in attendance at the celebrity charity event were Mary J. Blige (Honorary Chair), Camilla Belle, Paz Vega and Marc Anthony.

On Saturday, October 23, host Barbara Davis welcomed guests to the Beverly Hilton for the 32nd Anniversary Carousel of Hope Ball.

The celebrity charity event, founded by Barbara and the late Marvin Davis in 1977, brought together Hollywood’s elite as they raised nearly $2.5 million to benefit the clinical care and research at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes (BDC) where more than 5,000 children and young adults receive specialized care.

Jennifer Lopez To Perform At Carousel Of Hope Charity Gala

The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this month to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 23, and will honor Maria Shriver and Quincy Jones for their charity work.

This year celebrates 31 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 19th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.

Jennifer Lopez and her sister, Lynda, have launched their new charity on Larry King’s show, almost two years after announcing their plans to develop the initiative.

The Maribel Foundation – named after Marc Anthony’s sister, who died of a brain tumor – will allow specialists in LA treat children around the world using telecommunication technology.

“The Maribel Foundation is a foundation that Lynda and I have talked about forming for years, and when we both got pregnant, we decided it was something we wanted to really just do now,” Lopez told King. “Obviously, when you become a mom, your perspective and your whole kind of view on life change.”

J-Lo Completes Triathlon For Charity

Jennifer Lopez has competed in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon and raised $127,000 for charity.

The singer and actress – who completed the event in 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 28 seconds – raised the money for the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, a facility that provides seriously ill children with medical care from some of the country’s best doctors regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

“I feel really great and so glad I finished and that I made it out of the water – but more amazing than that, I feel really great that we raised $127,000 for the Children’s Hospital and hopefully it’ll go to good use,” said Lopez.

Jennifer Lopez will compete in her first triathlon to raise money for charity.

The 39-year-old singer and wife of Marc Anthony has just launched her new blog on the SELF magazine website, and will be joined by the magazine’s editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger when she takes part in the September 14 triathlon in Malibu, California.

“You have to start slow and give yourself time,” Lopez told Good Morning America. “I’m always challenging myself and seeing what I can do.”

Shakira Joins Latin American Solidarity Action Foundation

Shakira has announced her plan to raise $200 million for the charity América Latina en Acción Solidaria (ALAS).

The singer, who is already a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and founder of Colombian charity Pies Descalzos, will stage four fundraising concerts in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and New York this year.

ALAS is dedicated to aiding impoverished communities throughout all of Latin America, focusing on improved nutrition, health and education for children. “ALAS came about because of a social emergency: 350 thousand children die each year due to avoidable causes; 40 million children work and live on the streets,” Shakira said.

Singer Paul Simon, Co-Founder of the Children’s Health Fund, was joined by Honorary Co-Chairs Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez for the charity’s 20th Anniversary Gala. Simon hosted the event, and CHF Advisory Board Member Anthony performed.

The charity advocates policies and public programs that promote quality health care for all children, and it partners with major medical centers to deliver care to disadvantaged children.

Marc Anthony himself benefitted from similar health programs as a child in New York City, and he told Access Hollywood, “This is basic healthcare, healthcare for children who otherwise do not have access … and I’ll support that as long as they need me. It’s a cause that I’m really, really close to.”

Marc Anthony performed a lively three-song set backed by his powerhouse salsa band. Also in attendance were Anthony’s superstar spouse, Jennifer Lopez, actor Mark Wahlberg and former California Governor Gray Davis.

The event raised $4 million for the Clinic, which provides free health care services throughout Los Angeles County.

It is a tremor that will send shockwaves through nearly 60,000 families in the U.S. this year. However, it will not be registering on the Richter scale; the shift in their world will be caused by the diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. They will join the estimated 1.5 million afflicted Americans, along with their loved ones, who feel the reverberations of a disorder that leaves physical destruction, emotional devastation and financial ruin in its wake. Out of this rubble, a resolve emerges to research and fund a cure amongst the chaos.

For many, the first rumblings of Parkinson’s Disease are noticed in slurred speech, muscle stiffness, a shuffling gait; for actress Holly Robinson-Peete, it was noticing her dad walking with a limp while dropping her off at college in 1982. Upon returning home for Christmas of that year, Holly was told of his Bell’s Palsy, a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. At the age of 46, this was the onset of his diagnosis with Parkinson’s Disease.

His name may not sound familiar, however many know Matt Robinson as the man who swept our cares away. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony showed their support for the Celebrity Cancer Golf Classic by attending the final day of the event in October. More than $100,000 was raised for the Hospital Auxilo Mutuo Cancer Center and Sociedad America del Cancer, two cancer facilities in Puerto Rico.
