Stars To Be Honored For Charity At Chrysalis Butterfly Ball

Chrysalis – a charity dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged and homeless individuals become self-sufficient through employment opportunities – will hold its ninth annual Butterfly Ball this weekend.

The event will honor last year’s host, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, as well as Glee creator Ryan Murphy and Rush Hour director Brett Ratner. It was through Ratner that the organization connected with various celebrities, including Salma Hayek, Ice Cube, Nicolas Cage and action star Jackie Chan. Chan gave $100,000 to the charity, the largest single donation Chrysalis has ever received.

This year’s event will feature a special performance by the stars of Glee, and will be hosted by Randy Jackson and Mila Kunis. Rebecca Gayheart-Dane, Rick Hess and Dana Walden are co-chairs for the event.

Nicolas Cage And Friends To Heal The Bay At Charity Gala

Kicking off the celebration of its 25th anniversary, environmental group Heal the Bay has announced an eclectic group of green leaders to be honored at its Bring Back the Beach gala dinner on May 20.

Held on the sand at The Jonathan Beach Club, the gala is dubbed “An Evening Under The Stars.” Nearly 1,000 guests will join together to recognize the eco-accomplishments of Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage, The Walt Disney Company, environmental engineer and business leader Jack Baylis, and longtime Heal the Bay boardmember and fundraiser Luann Laval Williams.

Celebrities expected to attend include actresses Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Amy Smart, as well as TV personalities Chad Lowe, Donna Mills and Lindsay Wagner.

Nicolas Cage Buys A Charity Brick

Actor Nicolas Cage is backing a campaign in England to build a new intensive care unit for babies.

 Cage – who owns a property in the city of Bath – is supporting the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Appeal to help raise $4.5 million. To kick off the campaign, he purchased a “virtual brick” to symbolize the building materials needed to build the environmentally-friendly hospital ward, and encouraged others to do the same.  

“Please buy a brick, this is the last stretch to get that extra million, and it will be a green facility which is outstanding,” said the actor. “I would like to say thank you to all of you who have been so gracious in inviting me and giving me a warm welcome to your wonderful and historic city. Anything that I can do to give back and say thanks I am going to do.”

Celebrities Give Their Soles To Foster Care Centre

The first “Foster Soles” online charity auction took place last month to support Hillsides, a Los Angeles foster care and treatment centre.

Foster Soles collected the shoes of dozens of big names, such as Denzel Washington, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicolas Cage, who autographed their footwear before putting them up on the block.

Proceeds of the auction will be used by Hillsides for their programs and in public awareness. Once an orphanage, it is now a private, non-profit centre providing abused children with a safe refuge and advocating for their rights. Hillsides’ website says, “Although [the children] come from all over Southern California and encompass every ethnic and socioeconomic group, they share a common experience – the emotional scars that result from child abuse. With counselling and mental health treatment, children at Hillsides learn that they are not alone, that they are safe and cared for. Six programs constitute the framework for Hillsides treatment services – Residential Treatment, the Education Center, the Family Center and Advocacy.”

Barry Manilow Stands Up For A Cure

Fans of Barry Manilow will be excited about the new auction benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The charity is giving devotees of the singer two chances to meet Manilow backstage at concerts in Las Vegas and at the Nassau Coliseum. Both chances give you front row tickets to the shows.

The show at the Nassau Coliseum will take place on Valentine’s Day in February, and will be hosted by Kelly Ripa. The experience includes pre-concert reception with open bar (6pm) at Doolin’s Restaurant at the Nassau Coliseum plus 2 backstage passes and photos with both Barry Manilow and Kelly Ripa.

Oceana Awards To Honor Clinton And Sting

Bill Clinton, Sting, and Trudie Styler will be honored at the annual Oceana Partners Awards this weekend.

Chaired by Sam Waterston and Ted Danson and hosted by Pierce Brosnan, Ron Howard, and Robert Redford, the event honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions through their personal commitment to the cause of protecting and conserving the environment. Past honorees include Ted Turner, Don Henley, James Cameron, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, and Christopher Reeve. Past hosts have included Salma Hayek, Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ron Meyer and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Bill Clinton has been selected as this year’s recipient because his Clinton Climate Initiative – launched in 2006 – works with over 40 of the world’s largest cities to reduce greenhouse emissions. Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, were chosen due to their efforts to raise more than $25 million dollars through 15 benefit concerts for The Rainforest Foundation, which has now expanded to a network of interconnected organizations working in 23 countries around the globe.

Singer Annie Lennox hosted the launch of the Amnesty Arts Fund at The Twentieth Century Theatre in London last night, September 25.

The Amnesty Arts Fund brings together people who believe passionately in freedom of expression and projects which have the potential to reach new audiences and inspire creative activism around the world. Amnesty International has a long and proud tradition of working with creative industries and individuals to raise awareness for human rights issues across the globe. Oprah Tops Celebrity Philanthropy A-List

A list of the 30 largest public donations made by celebrities in the past year puts Oprah in the top spot.

The Giving Back Fund, which encourages and advises on celebrity philanthropy, compiles its list each year. President Marc Pollick said, “Encouragement-by-example is the main reason for the Giving Back 30 list.”

Oprah gave $58.3 million to Oprah’s Angel Network and her recently-opened Leadership Academy.

Nicolas Cage Donation Helps Former Child Soldiers

On Wednesday Nicolas Cage donated $2 million to help former child soldiers. The donation was pledged by video during a United Nations conference in New York.

Cage says, “I understand that this pledge is not a solution for the problem. It’s my hopeful wish that today’s discussions on this tragic subject at the United Nations conference may bring us closer to eradicating the nightmare of child soldiers.”

The United Nations estimates that more than 300,000 children are involved in serious armed conflict.
