Matthew Perry To Take Part In Charity Tennis

A host of celebrities will take part in the 2009 Celebrity Pro-Am To End MS tennis event this weekend.

Stars such as Matthew Perry, Gavin Rossdale, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Brody Jenner, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Alan Thicke, Linda Thompson, Matthew Lillard, and Wayne Bryan will join professional tennis players such as Tracy Austin, Pam Shriver, Derek Rostagno, Bill Scanlon, Katrina Adams, Taylor Dent, Michael Chang, Elliot Teltscher, Chuck Adams, Vijay Amritraj, Scott Davis and more at the event, which aims to raise money for the Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The event takes place on Saturday, November 14, at the Jack Kramer Club, 11 Montecillo Drive, Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274 (30 minutes south of Santa Monica).

Richard Branson Rocks The Kasbah For Charity

Richard Branson hosted his annual star-studded Rock The Kasbah charity event in Los Angeles last week.

The event attracted an amazing array of celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan, Sharon Stone, Paula Abdul, Daisy Fuentes, Jenna Elfman, Kristin Cavarlli, Matt Goss, Natasha Bedingfield, Gavin Rossdale and many others.

Proceeds from the evening went to Virgin Unite’s domestic and international programs, including the Eve Branson Foundation, set up by Sir Richard’s mother to help women in Morocco generate their own incomes to support their families.

Stars Gather For Annual Bridge School Benefit

Veteran musician Neil Young was surrounded by a plethora of stars at his annual Bridge School Benefit Concert on Saturday night.

The concert benefits a non-profit educational institution in Northern California for children with physical disabilities and severe speech impediments. It was co-founded by Young’s wife, Pegi, in 1986, after three of the couple’s children were born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy (their two sons have cerebral palsy and their daughter – like Neil – has epilepsy). Young organized the first Bridge School Concert in 1986, and with the exception of 1987, has hosted the event every year since.

Appearing at Saturday’s show at Mountain View in California were Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow, Wolfmother, Gavin Rossdale, Adam Sandler, Chris Martin from Coldplay and many more.

Bridge School ensures that children with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications.

Bridge School has established an outreach program to share what is developed at the school with parents, professionals and users of AAC/AT across the world.

Gavin Rossdale Dares 2 Dream At Charity Concert

One of Chicago’s hottest fanfare events, Dare 2 Dream, will kick off its sixth benefit event on Thursday, November 5th, at the House of Blues in Chicago.

Rock icon and featured artist, Gavin Rossdale, will perform to support pediatric cancer research and treatment, with an emphasis on the second most common cause of death in children, leukemia. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Illinois Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), a non-profit organization that is dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

“Children are our future and so we must continue to demonstrate a commitment to developing new treatment options, conducting research and finding promising new therapies,” said Mayor Richard Daley. “Working together we can make real progress in the fight against cancer and give children a chance at living full and active lives.”

Cancer kills 560,000 Americans every year. That’s 1,500 people each day, and one person every minute. Everyone has been touched by the damaging repercussions of cancer, but the tragedy is truly devastating when cancer claims the life of a child. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and 15 years of age. Diagnosed regularly, pediatric cancer strikes randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region – but at present, the prevention of pediatric cancer is impossible as its causes are mostly unknown. Due to the lack of essential media attention, awareness of much needed funding for pediatric cancer is virtually absent from the public eye. To make matters worse, the government’s cancer research budget has been cut every consecutive year since 2003. Given the rampant nature of this disease, we must stay committed to healing as many people as possible and finding a cure.

Gavin Rossdale, a musical icon and one of the most popular rock artists of the past two decades, will headline the event. As the lead singer for the British rock band Bush, he has sold over 10 million albums worldwide. The band’s first album, Sixteen Stone, peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and generated an amazing string of five Modern Rock top 5 hit singles including two at #1, “Glycerine” and “Comedown.” The band then released its second album, Razorblade Suitcase, which went straight to #1 on The Billboard Top 200 chart and spawned two singles that smashed into the top 5 of both Mainstream and Modern Rock charts. Gavin’s most recent album, Wanderlust, marks a new chapter in Gavin’s musical career and features some of his most personal and powerful songs to date. Gavin continues to rock some of the most prolific venues in the world and is excited to perform in Chicago to bring critical awareness and funding to this important cause.

John Mayer To Duet With Jordin Sparks For Charity

Grammy winner John Mayer & platinum artist Jordin Sparks will duet on March 26, 2009, when Carnival Cruise Lines and Mayercraft Carrier 2 present One Splendid Evening, a special concert event to benefit the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

Proceeds will help restore instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raise awareness about the importance of music as part of a child’s complete education.

One Splendid Evening will be held on board the new Carnival Splendor, Carnival’s largest and most innovative ship, while the vessel is docked at the Port of San Pedro in Los Angeles. The evening will include performances by Gavin Rossdale, Sara Bareilles, Erin McCarley, O.A.R., Guster and DJ Logic, as well as a meet and greet with all the artists. Guests will enjoy dinner, an open bar and additional live entertainment throughout the ship. The next day, the ship sets sail on a special four-day music cruise – the “Mayercraft Carrier 2: Even Crafter” voyage.

One Splendid Evening will give guests an opportunity to explore the $640 million Carnival Splendor, the largest “Fun Ship” ever based year-round in Southern California. Stars Sign Hardhats For Charity Auction

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has launched an online auction at Clothes Off Our Back featuring hardhats signed by celebrity volunteers and supporters of Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity.

The hardhats are signed and decorated by music, television and film stars including: Green Day, Ricky Martin, Linkin Park, U2, Justin Timberlake, The Jonas Brothers, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder and many more. The auction will run through March 6 with 100% of the proceeds helping to build more affordable homes in Greater Los Angeles.

Stars Set To Shine At Global Green Pre-Oscar Party

Environmental organization Global Green USA will hold their annual pre-Oscar party this week and have invited some stellar performers and hosts.

Actor David Arquette hosted a star-studded charity cocktail evening for Feeding America over the weekend.

The event – held in Los Angeles on Friday, January 9 – attracted an amazing array of celebrities, including Arquette’s wife Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Tobey Maguire, Josh Groban, Amanda Peet, Nick Lachey, Kevin Connelly, Lukas Haas, Jason Bateman and many more.

The event was held to help Shepard Fairey unveil his new range of artworks that raise awareness about Feeding America, an organization that increases public awareness of domestic hunger and advocates for public policies that benefit America’s hungry. Fairey is one of the world’s best known street artists.

Each year, the Feeding America network provides food assistance to more than 25 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors.

Chris Evert Charity Tennis Event Attracts Celebrities

The 2008 Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic was held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, November 1-2nd, and once again proved to be a raging success – so much so, that tennis legend Chris Evert has now raised close to $20 million for charities!

The event kicked off with a Pro-Am at the Boca Raton Resort & Club tennis courts and attracted some new faces this year. Comedian Billy Crystal and 12-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres joined regulars such as Chevy Chase, Stone Phillips, Maeve Quinlan, Bud Collins, Vince Spadea, Alan Thicke, Jana Novotna, Gavin Rossdale, and Jon Lovitz.

Evert created the fundraising event to fight drug abuse and assist neglected and abused children in South Florida.

“What these treatment centers do is they get these women or men back into the mainstream of life, back on track, whether they’re gonna work, whether they want to go to school, whether they want to be great parents, whatever, it gets them back into mainstream of living,” says Evert. “Circumstances in life sometimes get you to a very low and a lot of people in the world, that’s how they reacted by turning to drugs and its not something that you should look down on and snub, it can happen to anybody.”

Chris Evert Charities partners with The Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida, a public -private partnership administered with the State of Florida, to raise money for needy programs which otherwise would not be fully-funded by the State. The Ounce of Prevention Fund matches moneys raised through the Chris Evert/Bank of America Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic.

While Chris has been busy with her own work at Chris Evert Charities, she also donates her time and efforts to other worthwhile programs including: The Special Olympics, The March Of Dimes, The Martina Navratilova Youth Foundation, The Michael Bolton Charities, The American AIDS Foundation, The Elton John AIDS Foundation, The Red Cross and The U.S. Olympic Ski Team.

Save The Music's Esquire Party In The Hills

VH1’s Save The Music Foundation is to team up with Esquire Magazine for a charity party in the Hollywood Hills.

This fall Esquire will unveil its sixth annual Signature Space, transforming a stunning, contemporary home into a true personification of the modern man’s lifestyle. Charity events held at the Esquire Signature Spaces have raised more than $7 million to date, and on Saturday, October 25th at 7PM the VH1 Save The Music Foundation will once again partner with the Magazine for a spectacular bash to benefit the Foundation’s work to restore instrumental music education programs.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette in a Race for Research

The clock is ticking for actors Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who have pledged to raise $1 million in two weeks to benefit the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation (EBMRF).

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a genetic condition that causes skin and linings to break and blister at the slightest touch. Sufferers battle daily with fluid loss and infection of the open wounds. In worst cases, they’ll die of skin cancer before the age of 40, many in infancy.

“Now is such an important time to put the spotlight on EB and ensure that research can continue at a fast pace,” Cox told the Associated Press.

Both Cox and Arquette are honorary board members of the foundation, as are actors Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Jackie and Adam Sandler and singers Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani. Kate Beckinsale, Orlando Bloom, Rashida Jones, Eva Longoria and James Marsden have also joined the challenge to bring much needed attention to the painful disease.

Cox and Arquette have a personal link to EB as someone close to them suffers from it. To raise funds for EBMRF on an ongoing basis they have co-designed a necklace with a butterfly, a symbol for hope and freedom, etched onto a small silver pendant, on sale at SATYA boutique in New York and online at www.satyajewelry.com.

Between a Rock and a hard place

It’s a case of a bad boy wanting to be good with singer Kid Rock. The Devil Without A Cause looks like he is turning over a new leaf, and is returning to the Waffle House restaurant where he was arrested last year – but this time it’s for charity.

The 37-year-old was charged with battery after a brawl in Duluth, Georgia, in October. But the musician has now decided to make amends by greeting fans and signing autographs at the scene of the crime as part of a fundraiser for a local homeless shelter, Nicholas House.

“For a while now, we’ve been working with Kid Rock’s management to try and turn a negative into a positive,” said Waffle House spokesperson Pat Warner. “We’re hoping to raise some money for a worthwhile charity.”

The event will occur later today, March 11.

Tennis for charity in the desert

Another event taking place today is the fourth annual K-Swiss Desert Smash Charity Tennis and Golf event being held at the La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs. The event benefits the Coachella Valley chapter of Variety – The Children’s Charity and features a special tennis match between 2008 Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic.

Other celebrities expected to attend include Bush frontman (and husband of Gwen Stefani) Gavin Rossdale, Borat star Ken Davitian, and David Spade.

Theron shares her threads for charity

Another star in the mood for giving is the stunning Charlize Theron, who is auctioning off the first red carpet gown she was ever given to wear by a designer.

No, the dress isn’t made from red carpet – it’s actually a one-of-a-kind silk dress designed exclusively for the actress’ debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 by Narciso Rodriguez.

All of the proceeds from the auction, which can be accessed through Theron’s eBay page, will go to the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, a mobile clinic that serves more than 3000 high school students in Theron’s home country of South Africa. The project was launched in 2007 in association with the Entertainment Industry Foundation to create a safer, healthier, and better life for families in South Africa, especially those touched by the effect of HIV/AIDS.

The auction runs until March 13, and the bids have already gone over $1,000.

The auction runs until March 17, and proceeds go to Communities in Schools, nation’s largest dropout prevention organization. Leona Lewis – a star on the rise

Another star with an interest in South Africa at the moment is singer Leona Lewis. The 22-year-old X Factor winner is currently enjoying a meteoric rise to fame, with her album Spirit holding the record for the fastest selling debut album ever released in the UK. And now the young star has witnessed the extent of the AIDS pandemic during a recent trip to South Africa.

Lewis has just returned from a 3-day trip to Johannesburg with Sport Relief, an initiative of Comic Relief, in which she raised awareness of the plight of AIDS orphans and sufferers. But it was all almost too much for the singer, who describes in her diary how she broke down while visiting some of the worst cases.

“Some of the horrors I have seen will never leave me,” she said. “It’s amazing to see the great work that Sport Relief does firsthand and the difference they make, their projects and centres keep communities going and give them something to be proud and positive about.”

In response to her trip, Lewis has just announced that the stunning purple gown she wore for her performance at last month’s Brit Awards will be auctioned on eBay, with all proceeds going to Sport Relief.

“It’s been a great pleasure for me to work with Leona Lewis right from the start,” said Roberto Cavalli, who designed the dress. “She has an incredible voice, beautiful eyes, and a fresh and positive attitude. I’m happy that a dress I have created for her for an important occasion is now being auctioned for a charity. It’s a sign of her great generosity and I’m proud that the name Roberto Cavalli is linked to it.”

As if all of that is not enough, the singer is also donating the proceeds from her new double A-side single, Footprints In The Sand/Better In Time, to the charity.
