The World Food Programme has been hosting rap music star 50 Cent during his trip this week to Somalia and Kenya this week, where he was able to see at first hand the fight against hunger in the Horn of Africa.

The rapper flew to Dolow in Somalia’s southern border region on Wednesday. Dolow is where thousands of women and children fleeing from drought and conflict have taken refuge. While at the Kabasa camp for displaced people, he saw women and children being screened for malnutrition, and visited a nearby school.

Shannon Tavarez – the 11-year-old Lion King actress whose battle with Leukemia was supported by Rihanna, Alicia Keys and 50 Cent – passed away on Monday.

The young star – who played Young Nala on Broadway’s The Lion King for seven months – was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia in April, attracting the attention of celebrities who wanted to help. Both Rihanna and Alicia Keys urged their own fans to be tested to find a bone marrow match for Shannon and others who suffer from the disease. Keys even Skyped with Shannon while she was in hospital.

“(Tavarez) should be performing on Broadway, but is confined to her bed, fighting for her life,” said Rihanna in July. “She needs to find a bone marrow donor to survive. I urge all my fans to register (as donors). It’s the most beautiful thing someone could do, to give the gift of life.”

Rapper 50 Cent has been approached by African charity eBlockwatch to adopt an endangered black rhinoceros.

The organization helps communities in Southern Africa fight crime, including poaching, and hopes 50 Cent’s involvement would help raise awareness of the animal’s plight – 227 protected animals have been slaughtered by poachers so far this year.

“We want to ask him if he wants to become the godfather of our rhino so that he can create awareness worldwide about rhino poaching,” eBlockwatch’s Andre Snyman told South Africa’s Sunday Times.

Rapper 50 Cent spent the weekend bringing joy to kids from his native Queens neighborhood, despite New York authorities refusing him permission to play a secret show.

Though his secret concert plans fell through due to safety concerns, the rap artist continued with his plans for Family Day, arranging for hundreds of local kids to be bussed the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey on Saturday, and held a picnic event back in the borough of Queens on Sunday.

“I am constantly searching for ways to give back to the community that helped create me and contributed to my success,” said 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson. “I can think of no better way to do this than to help improve the lives of the young people that reside there through programs created by my foundation.”

“A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE” is part of MTV’s Choose or Lose campaign, an initiative designed to engage, inform and empower young voters on the political issues that matter to them most. The concert hopes to draw attention to a new petition launched by MTV called the Bill of Rights for American Veterans (or BRAVE) which calls on politicians to support vets’ issues and enact positive legislative changes.
