Mia Hamm To Hold Third Celebrity Charity Soccer Challenge

Soccer star Mia Hamm and her husband, former Dodger Nomar Garciaparra, will host their third annual ‘Celebrity Soccer Challenge’ on January 16 at the Home Depot Center in Carson California to raise money and awareness about bone marrow disease.

Last years event raised nearly $200,000 for Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation while encouraging the thousands of fans in attendance to register for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.

It is a cause close to Hamm’s heart, because she lost her brother Garrett to aplastic anemia, a bone marrow disease, in 1997.

“The more we can spread the word, the better,” Hamm said. “We can’t do justice by just verbalizing, so stopping and registering can save a life.”

Mia and Nomar’s passion was on exhibit Monday as the humanitarian couple visited sick children in the Healing Garden at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Some of those children are bone marrow transplant patients who will benefit from the couple’s third annual Celebrity Soccer Challenge.

The charity soccer challenge gives fans a chance to become potential donors and save lives. The past two events have seen more than 200 people register, but there’s a shortage of minorities in the registry. Hamm and Garciaparra are hoping to change that.

“There is no color barrier when you walk through that hospital,” Garciaparra said. “Cancer doesn’t discriminate one bit.”

All proceeds from the soccer event will go to Childrens Hospital and the Mia Hamm Foundation.

Soccer players: Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett, Heather O’Reilly, Shannon Boxx, Gerson Mayen, Edson Buddle.
Athletes: Nomar Garciaparra, Kerri Walsh, Casey Jennings, Ryan Nyquist, Eric Fonoimoana, Jordan Farmar (Los Angeles Lakers).
Celebrities: Sabrina Bryan, Gilles Marini, Rivers Cuomo, James Lesure, Dule Hill, Adrian R’Mante, Donald Faison, Josh Hutcherson and many, many more.

Celebrities To Play In Charity Soccer Match

Former US soccer player/World Cup champion Mia Hamm and husband Nomar Garciaparra are once again set to host their annual charity soccer match benefiting Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation.

The event will be held on Saturday, January 17, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Proceeds from the event benefit bone marrow transplant patients and their families.

Celebrities expected to participate in the match include skateboarding legends Tony Hawk and Ryan Sheckler, U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh, NFL great Marcus Allen, actors Zachary Levi and Jimmy Jean Louis, Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo, Good Charlotte's Benji Madden, Anthony Lapaglia, Andrea Bowen, Chris Richardson, Josh Hutchenson, Misty May-Treanor, current and former members of the U.S. men’s and women’s national soccer team, and many more.

Last year’s event raised more than $150,000 for charity, and the organizers are hoping to top that this year.

“Raising money is wonderful,” said Garciaparra. “But to give somebody a chance to save a life, you can’t put a price on that. It was huge. And it speaks volumes about what we can do. We have a booth set up where people can be typed for bone marrow match, and we had 200 people register last year and we actually found an unrelated match.”

General admission tickets for the Celebrity Soccer Challenge are $20 and are on sale through Ticketmaster or directly through the Home Depot Center Box Office.

Olympic Athletes Sign Computers For Auction

Yesterday, March 24, saw the Olympic torch lit in a ceremony in front of the Temple of Hera on the historic grounds of Olympia in Athens, Greece, and an exclusive new charity auction has been launched to celebrate the relay of worldwide harmony.

Personal computer innovators Lenovo are offering a series of limited edition Lenovo 3000 V200 notebook PCs autographed by some of the world’s best and brightest athletes. The red and silver laptops were inspired by the Lenovo-designed Olympic torch currently on its way to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and all proceeds from the auction will go to the Lenovo Hope Fund.

The auction will run on eBay until August 8, the date set for the torch’s triumphant arrival at the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, just in time for the opening ceremony, after crossing five continents and stopping in 21 cities around the world.

The first wave of the auction is running now, with computers signed by USA beach vollyball team members Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, and French sailing star Xavier Rohart. These will be followed by laptops autographed by Australian swim team members Lisbeth Lenton and Eamon Sullivan in April. The second wave begins in May.

The Lenovo Hope Fund was established by Lenovo to support the creation and growth of new businesses in struggling communities, as well as the non-profit organizations that serve them.
