Tiki Barber Gives Opportunity To Handicapped Children

Former New York Giants’ star Tiki Barber and his girlfriend Traci Johnson are partners and advocates for a brand new charity called Opportunity League.

Based in NY, the charity creates an environment for handicapped children to play competitive sports, which are catered to their needs (i.e. baseballs with beeping devices so blind children can find them, etc). 6 million children are handicapped, and the Opportunity League creates an environment where everyone can participate. They design games and bring able-bodied kids into disabled situations, and have everyone play together. It’s a unique opportunity for kids to see kids with all types of conditions. Disabled kids become isolated, and this is allows them to get out and participate in a community activity.

From the charity: “The Opportunity League is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting lifespan fitness by combining inclusive games and programs with challenging play environments in community-based, accessible recreation facilities. Our flagship facility will developed in the Hudson Valley Region of NY, and it will the first of its kind: a recreation facility where fitness and inclusion go hand in hand; a park where accessibility and sustainability are fundamental design principles; a gathering place where individual differences and varied abilities are celebrated by the community; a collaborative environment where trained mentors and volunteers facilitate fitness, recreation, and competition for all. The Opportunity League is designed to be replicable, and we look forward to continuing the development around the Country.”

Jennifer Stone Reads For The Record With Charity Campaign

Actress Jennifer Stone, of the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place and the movie Harriett the Spy has teamed up with Jumpstart to be an ambassador for this year’s Read for the Record campaign.

On October 8, 2009, adults across the globe read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar to 2,019,752 children to raise awareness of literacy, with stars such as Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado, Meredith Vieira, Mary-Louise Parker, Tiki Barber, Vince Vaughn, Lo Bosworth and Henry Winkler lending a hand. On October 7, 2010, Jumpstart will host over 2.5 million people worldwide as they read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

“I support reading, because it’s been such a wonderful escape for me in my life,” says Jennifer Stone. “I wish kids would know just how much it is a positive thing. Not only does it provide such a wonderful escape, but it greatly intensifies vocabulary and reading comprehension by simply voyaging to another place through a book. What I love about Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is it devotes a whole day to kids, parents, and readers alike to experience the fantastic world of reading using the charm of classic children’s novels.”

John Legend Performs For Show Me Campaign

Singer John Legend hosted a benefit for his Show Me Campaign on Tuesday, May 19, that raised over $300,000.

Along with Wyclef Jean, Jeffrey Sachs, former New York Giants player Tiki Barber and many others, Legend rocked a rooftop performance to raise support of the campaign he started two years ago to encourage social, economic, personal and educational growth of individuals, families and communities.

“Our organization by itself can’t do it, but we believe we can be part of the solution and we don’t want to wait around for everybody else to do it,” he said. “We’re funding a village in Tanzania and we’re seeing positive results on the ground that show that our work is making a positive impact over there, and if we were just to replicate that throughout the world, we can see a lot of progress made.”
