The Secret Policeman’s Ball is back – and its heading for America!

Amnesty International’s legendary charity show – featuring a plethora of music and comedy talent – will hit the Radio City Music Hall on March 4. Organizers have confirmed Coldplay, Russell Brand, Mumford & Sons, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Reggie Watts as part of the lineup, with more to come.

The auction includes guitar picks donated by stars such as Mark Ronson, Paul Weller, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Duran Duran, Emmylou Harris, James Blunt, Dave Stewart, Paramore, Jamie Cullum, Razorlight and many more.

The auction will benefit two very important charities – Trekstock, which supports young people with cancer, and LIFEbeat, which educates young people about HIV/AIDS prevention.

Stars have already reacted to news of New Zealand’s devastating earthquake, which struck the South Island city of Christchurch yesterday.

Emergency workers are currently struggling to free hundreds of people trapped after the quake struck at around 1pm local time. 38 bodies have been identified, with the death toll expected to rise with the sun this morning.

Stars have taken to Twitter to send their wishes to those affected by the disaster, while some are encouraging fans to give to charity.

Duran Duran Join All-Star Recording For Climate Awareness

Some of the biggest selling singers and groups of all time – and even a Nobel laureate – are lending their voices to a new song to raise awareness of global warming.

British superstars Duran Duran are joining together with Germany’s The Scorpions, French ‘Piaf’ actress Marion Cotillard, Senegalese star Youssou N’dour, Sir Bob Geldof, Chinese singer Khalil Fong and South African archbishop Desmond Tutu to record the song. This Sunday, July 1st, music will fill the skies in remembrance of Princess Diana. The event was organised by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry to celebrate her life, ten years after her death.

Concert For Diana will take place at Wembley Stadium in London, and is showcasing a wide variety of musical styles, from Andrew Lloyd-Webber to P. Diddy. Earlier this month, Princes William and Harry announced that they would hold a charity concert in 2007 to commemorate what would have been their mother’s 46th birthday. Taking place at London’s famous Wembley football stadium, all available tickets for the concert have now sold out.

Performers including Elton John, singer Joss Stone, Diana’s favourite band Duran Duran, Bryan Ferry, the English National Ballet, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and hip-hop artist Pharrell Williams will appear at the event on 1st July.

Speaking for himself and his brother, Prince William said, “We both wanted to put our stamp on it. We want it to represent exactly what our mother would have wanted.”

Return of the Secret Policeman's Ball

In 1979, John Cleese headlined the first of a series of performances entitled ‘The Secret Policeman’s Ball’. The show was to raise awareness of Amnesty International UK, which it certainly achieved. Amnesty International UK stated that after the first 3 shows, public awareness of AIUK increased by 700%.

The first show starred other members of Monty Python, Billy Connolly, and it also gave Rowan Atkinson his big break. The Secret Policeman’s Ball was then made into a feature-length film.

In 1987, musical acts were added to the line-up, starring such artists as Kate Bush, Bob Geldof and Duran Duran.
