Arnold Schwarzenegger Attends Charity Gala

Arnold Schwarzenegger was a special guest at the After-School All-Stars Gala on June 17, 2010.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, on top of having been the Terminator and the current California governor, founded an organization called After-School All-Stars in 1992, which works to keep inner-city kids off the streets and out of trouble. This after school program gives students activities to do at school from 3 to 6 pm. According to Governor Schwarzenegger, “That’s the danger zone for kids. It’s usually when most of the juvenile crime, teen pregnancy and drug and alcohol related-issues happen. My idea was, let’s keep those kids under supervision, give them a positive alternative, homework assistance, tutoring and arts programs.”

Schwarzenegger recently left his “Golden State” for the New York East coast. Among the things he did during his stay in New York City, was attend the After-School All-Stars Gala. He was told that his mere appearance at the gala would bring an extra $250,000 for the charity, which is very helpful in such difficult economic times. He also got to talk to and meet a few of the 80,000 kids that are facilitated by this after-school program every year. After-School All-Stars has reached 13 cities around America, and it has also attracted many celebrity supporters, including hip-hop star, Fabolous. Fabolous was recently made the National Music Ambassador of the organization.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Puts Chickens First

Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a landmark legislation on Tuesday that protects animal welfare and food safety. The new law requires that shelled (whole) eggs sold in California comply with the modest but important food safety and animal welfare standards of Proposition 2. Passed in a 2008 landslide, Prop 2 phases out production of eggs from hens crammed into cages.

The bill, A.B. 1437, requires that all whole eggs sold in California as of Jan. 1, 2015, come from hens able to stand up, fully extend their limbs, lie down and spread their wings without touching each other or the sides of their enclosure, thus requiring cage-free conditions for the birds.

“By signing this bill, Governor Schwarzenegger has taken an important step in protecting animal welfare in a way that will also improve food safety for consumers across California,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “Californians have made it clear that they don’t want unsafe eggs from hens crammed into cages, and we applaud the Legislature and governor for heeding this call.”

Maria Shriver Announces Arts Charity Campaign

Maria Shriver has shone the spotlight on the arts in a new blog she wrote to raise awareness of a new campaign to raise funds for the California Arts Council.

“Art is fundamental, unique to each of us,” writes California’s first lady in the Huffington Post. "For me, writing allows me to be creative… My husband, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, paints to relax. And of course, he loves to act. But he also approached bodybuilding as a form of art, self-expression and communication.

“Even in difficult economic times – especially in difficult economic times – the arts are essential. And right now, Californians have an incredible opportunity to support the arts through the Million Plates Campaign for the Arts coordinated by The California Arts Council.

Maria Shriver Announces Women's Conference Lineup

Maria Shriver has announced the lineup for this year’s Women’s Conference, to be held from Sunday, October 24 through Tuesday, October 26 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

“Our theme this year is ’It’s Time’ – and we are hoping The Women’s Conference inspires women to see this challenging moment in history as an opportunity to come together and transform ourselves, our communities and our world as Architects of Change,” she wrote in the Huffington Post. "I could not be more proud to disclose this amazing lineup, which will be led by Laila Ali, Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz, Martha Beck, Mary J. Blige, Erin Brockovich, Campbell Brown, Deepak Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, Linda Ellerbee, Giselle Fernandez, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Gregory, Arianna Huffington, Women for Hire CEO Tory Johnson, Donna Karan, Billie Jean King, New York Times Columnist Nicholas Kristof, Matt Lauer, Omega Institute Co-Founder Elizabeth Lesser, Journalists Laura Ling and Lisa Ling, Jillian Michaels, former Xerox Chairwoman & CEO and Save the Children Board Chair Anne Mulcahy, The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Poet Mary Oliver, Suze Orman, Dr. Oz, Tony Robbins, Al Roker, Diane Sawyer, The Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop and Primate The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Howard Schultz, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Katherine Schwarzenegger, Jessica Simpson, Anna Deavere Smith, Disney/ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney, “The Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, Kerry Washington, Ali Wentworth and Oprah Winfrey.

“We’ll kick the Conference off on October 24 with Maria Shriver’s March on Alzheimer’s and candlelight vigil in Long Beach, which I will emcee with Leeza Gibbons, Peter Gallagher and Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines. Alzheimer’s is a mind-blowing disease that disproportionately impacts women – both as victims and caretakers of loved one’s suffering from it. With more than 5 million people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in this country and a new diagnosis every 70 seconds, I believe it’s time to pick up the pace and start marching to defeat this devastating disease.

Eagles Founder Glenn Frey Busy With Charity Work

Eagles singer Glenn Frey acted as honorary chairman for the 2010 grand auction to benefit the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Coachella Valley on Saturday, March 13, at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells, California.

“I’ve been helping kids — at-risk kids — for a long time,” he told The Desert Sun last week. “Thirty years. It seems like now times are even more troubled for young people.”

The rock legend first became active in children’s charities in the 1990s, when he started hosting inner-city kids in Colorado each summer.

LTTS Exclusive Series: After-School All-Stars - Part 7

Look To The Stars is proud to present the seventh and final part of a series of pieces written by students from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s After-School All-Stars.

We asked the students from Griffith Middle School in East LA what they would like to see changed about the world, and which celebrities they think would best be able to lead the way. Over the last seven days the kids have written about Barack Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. The stories have all been written with careful consideration and hope, and we were impressed with the scope of answers.

The After-School All-Stars program strives to improve kids’ lives by nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits through programs that incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities. For more information, visit AfterSchoolAllStars.org
