Leonardo DiCaprio Honored By Cinema For Peace

The charity gala event Cinema For Peace has attracted numerous politicians and celebrities in Berlin this week in support of the organization’s goal of promoting peace and international understanding through film.

Most notably, Leonardo DiCaprio received an award for his efforts in backing the documentary “The 11th Hour.” As a special honoree, DiCaprio was presented with the International Green Film Award presented by BMW by Mikhail Gorbachev. The award offers a platform for environmental activists to raise public awareness for environmental issues and comes with a $250,000 donation for an environmental foundation or film project.

DiCaprio has become known as one of the hardest working environmentalists in Hollywood. He’s is a board member of Global Green USA and the National Resources Defense Council, and also set up the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to help draw attention to environmental issues.

His support is both creative and financial; he’s financed and produced short films on the subject of environmental protection, including “Global Warming” and “Water Planet,” as well as, of course, the environmental documentary film “11th Hour.” He is also planning to develop an eco-friendly resort in Belize in Central America.

The Cinema for Peace award has previously been given to Catherine Deneuve, Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Liza Minnelli and Sir Peter Ustinov, Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere and Milla Jovovich.

Christopher Lee Talks About 'Child Survival'

Audiences around the world know him as Dracula, the wizard Saruman from The Lord of the Rings, and Count Dooku from Star Wars, episodes II and III, but Christopher Lee is also a leading supporter of UNICEF, particularly the charity’s Child Survival Campaign.

The world-famous actor appeared with his wife, Gitte, this week at BURDA LIVE in Offenburg, Germany, where he talked about his support for the United Nation’s Children’s Fund.

Lee spoke about UNICEF’s Child Survival Campaign, saying, “Children are our future.” He continued, expressing what a disgrace it is that children are dying from poverty and hunger.

Almost one in five children do not live to the age of five in Western and Central Africa, with 186 deaths per 1,000 live births. UNICEF’s Child Survival Campaign works to alleviate the basic causes of death, including common childhood diseases such as pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, malaria and measles.

Ever fancy a kiss with James Bond? Or a cuddle with Hugh Grant? One lucky bidder did on Tuesday night, when they won the chance to do exactly that at a charity auction in London.

The Great British Movie Event, a dinner and auction to raise cash for the National Film and Television School, attracted a host of famous faces, including Richard Attenborough, Christopher Lee, Rowan Atkinson, Honor Blackman, Bill Nighy, and Richard Curtis. Hosted by Jonathan Ross, the evening raised over $800,000 for the school, which specializes in high-end media training.

The chance to kiss three living legends – Hugh Grant, James Bond actor Daniel Craig, and Harry Potter’s Robbie Coltrane – sold for a whopping $39,000, with the honor going to Barbara Broccoli, producer of the James Bond film franchise.

And although they didn’t have to fight over the girl, Craig and Grant did enter into a bidding war over some Harry Potter memorabilia, with Craig eventually paying $36,000 for the chance to own some of the famous wizard’s belongings. Hugh Grant was later outbid again, this time for two walk-on parts in one of his own films…

Other items up for auction on the night included the dinner jacket worn by Daniel Craig in the most recent Bond film ‘Casino Royale’, which sold for almost $20,000, and a signed copy of JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which fetched $39,000.

Hollywood's Humanitarians At Cinema For Peace

Celebrities are offering support for a variety of humanitarian causes at Cinema For Peace in Berlin this week.

UNICEF supporter Christopher Lee has spoken out about the duty of celebrities to bring attention to and support causes to improve the world, especially for children.

“The world today is such a terrible mess, and the children are suffering so much that anyone who can help by talking about it should do so,” he says.

UNICEF is one of the main beneficiaries of the Cinema for Peace charity gala. This year is also set to benefit the American Foundation for AIDS Research and Healing the Divide.
