The formerly private Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational is now open to the public.

Between March 31 – April 3, fans in the Las Vegas area will have the chance to see some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment at the premier celebrity golf celebration. Tickets are on sale now for the 10th annual event, hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino at Shadow Creek.

The four-day tournament will once again offer the parties, A-list entertainment and competitive golf that have earned the event its reputation as one of the best of its kind.

Stars Play American Century Championship Golf For Charity

The 21st annual American Century Championship golf tournament took place over the weekend in Nevada, in honor of Lance Armstrong.

For an incredible athlete who was diagnosed with testicular cancer, with a tumor that had metastasized to his lungs, this charity golf tournament benefited the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation and several local and national cancer institutes.

Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Jerry Rice, Taylor Hicks, Troy Aikmen, Don Cheadle and Mario Lemieux were among the 80 sports and entertainment celebrities and hall of famers who competed this weekend.

Ray Romano will join a host of celebrities at the annual American Century Championship charity golf tournament in July.

Confirmed to take part in the event are Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Ryan Sheckler, Don Cheadle, Kevin Nealon and many others.

The event – now in its 21st year – will take place at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada, July 13-18. The tournament will benefit a number of charities, including Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG Foundation.

Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams announced the upcoming show during individual live appearances on CBS’s “The Early Show,” ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “TODAY” show, respectively. NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley hit the greens for charity last week as he took part in the 4th Annual Barkley, Bean, Bryant & Friends Celebrity Skins Game on Friday February 6 at the YMCA Par 3 in Lakeland Florida.

Barkley is no stranger to the event and has helped raise $725,00 for The First Tee of Lakeland’s youth golf facility’s budget.

“When I did it the first time, I just did it. And I had such a good time, it’s one of the first things I put on my schedule every year,’’ Barkley said.

Stand Up To Cancer A Huge Success

A multitude of stars came out on Friday night as part of the Stand Up To Cancer television extravaganza to raise money for cancer research.

The hour-long program – simulcast live on NBC, ABC, and CBS – featured celebrities such as Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry, Forest Whitaker and Casey Affleck reading accounts of people battling cancer, as well as musical items, comedy sketches, and the opportunity for people to ring up and pledge donations – with stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, America Ferrera and Kirsten Dunst answering the phones.

“This is an absolutely historic night, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of the three networks,” event organiser, producer and cancer survivor Laura Ziskin told the audience at Los Angeles’ Kodak Theatre.

Former NBA star “Sir” Charles Barkley recently picked up the tuition for a busboy at a restaurant in Philly.

Yes, the man who once renounced being a role model does have a good heart. Sir Charles told Christian Abate that he would like to pick up the tab of his tuition. Probably shell shocked, Abate did not know how to respond. Barkley told him that he had the length of the meal to decide. Proving he was a smart kid, Abate accepted the offer.

In an interview in the Philadelphia Daily News, Barkley divulged what inspired him to help Abate: “He’s a nice kid,” Barkley said. “He was working with kids, I loved that he wanted to be a teacher, and I wanted to help him.”

The Second Annual ‘Ante Up for Africa’ poker tournament was held on July 2nd in Las Vegas, and drew an impressive field of poker pro’s, celebrities and athletes – all of who helped make the event a success by raising over $400,000 for charity.

The event, co-hosted by humanitarian/actor Don Cheadle and poker pro Annie Duke, is already having a positive impact in Darfur – notably in reference to a UN Security Council vote authorizing a peacekeeping force in the area. “It wouldn’t have taken place [without us],” said Cheadle.

“It’s just great to see everybody,” Cheadle said as the event began.

Celebrities To Raise Stakes For Africa Again

The 2008 ‘Ante Up For Africa’ Poker Tournament at the World Series of Poker will be held on July 2 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The tournament is the brainchild of actor Don Cheadle and poker pro Annie Duke, who created the event to raise money and awareness for the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.

“After the success of last year’s tournament, we are looking forward to another exciting year while raising awareness for an ongoing crisis,” Duke said. “It is exciting to bring the world of poker and entertainment together, and we are once again asking players who win prize money to donate half of their winnings to our charities.”

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $700,000, thanks in part to the stellar list of celebrities, athletes, and poker professionals who participated.

Legendary athlebrities from football, baseball, basketball and hockey, gathered under the hot desert sun on June 7 and 8 to raise money and awareness for several very worthwhile causes. The Pro Sports Team Challenge Golf Tournament at the Eagle Falls Golf Club at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino (near Palm Springs, California) settled the debate as to which sport has the best golfers, while competing for a total purse of $250,000 for chairty.

Team Basketball hit the greens for the USO. Led by NBA great Charles Barkley and featuring his buddies Clyde Drexler, Jason Kidd, George Gervin and Kenny Smith, the team made every swing count in efforts to help comfort our hardworking military. While Barkley was psyched for the event, he didn’t have high expectations for his team.

“One of the highlights of my life was [when] the USO took me to Iraq, Kuwait, Dubai,” said Barkley during the event. “I got to visit with some of the troops. So it’s a great organization and, um, unfortunately we’re not going to win a lot of money for them because my team [Basketball] sucks!”

Four Teams, four captains, and four charities! On June 7-8th, in Palm Springs California, the Pro Team Sports Challenge will finally settle the debate as to which athletes are the best golfers. Led by Team Challenge Commissioner and NBA legend Charles Barkley, the two-day golf event will pit some of the best athletes from four sports – baseball, basketball, hockey, and football – against each other on the greens. The event will raise money for four different charities while introducing a cool new feature: fan interaction.

During the course of the event, fan interaction will influence the outcome of the game; think ‘American Idol’ meets sports. Fans can sign up at Team Challenge to become one of the ‘ProCoaches.’ ProCoaches will act as ‘virtual’ coaches from their computers or mobile devices, where they can make strategic decisions that will have a real impact on the outcome of the match. The $250,000 prize will be split among the designated charities for each team, as selected by the Team Captain. NBA Star Charles Barkley Donates to Fire Victims

Last July, former NBA player Charles Barkley took a time out from the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament to check out the damage caused by a fire that swept through South Lake Tahoe. After seeing the fire’s devastation, Barkley donated $25,000 and also promised to send a generous donation to support the fire victims. And this week, as promised, the 11-Time NBA ALL Star sent the Community Disaster Resource Center (CDRC) for Angora fire victims a check for $100,000.

“This additional aid is coming at a time when the plight of the survivors has passed from many minds, and the need is greater than ever,” said CDRC Board Chairman Dick Schwarte. “There are so many families in the throes of trying to rebuild their lives so that they can stay here in South Lake, and these additional funds will enable us to assist those individuals in response to their requests.”

The Angora Fire was a wind-driven fire that started near a North Upper Truckee Road subdivision near Angora Lakes, Fallen Leaf Lake, and South Lake Tahoe in California around 2:15 PM on Sunday, June 24, 2007. The devastating fire destroyed 254 homes, displaced 3,500 residents, and caused more than $160 million in damages.
