Celebrities To Wear Purple For Spirit Day

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will join millions of lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and allies by participating in Spirit Day and wearing purple on October 20, 2011.

Wearing purple on this day symbolizes support for LGBT people and against bullying of LGBT teens.

GLAAD is working with organizations including the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the PACER Center, GLSEN, GSA Network, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), PFLAG and The Trevor Project as part of National Bullying Prevention Month to inspire Americans to wear purple on Spirit Day.

Stars Make It Pink For Breast Cancer With Celebrity Charity Auction

Throughout the month of October, eBay users will notice a pink hue to the world’s largest online marketplace. That’s because eBay Giving Works, the company’s charity fundraising program, will be hosting its 8th annual fundraising campaign in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The fundraiser, called “Make It Pink,” will benefit nonprofit organizations doing critical work to educate the public, save lives and find a cure for breast cancer, which kills more than 40,000 women and 400 men annually.

Selena Gomez and Joe Jonas joined Ryan Seacrest in launching the second closed-circuit media center called “The Voice” in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) last week.

‘The Voice’ studios serve as creative outlets for sick and injured children who have spent the majority of their lives in a hospital bed. The Ryan Seacrest Foundation, as well as partners Coca-Cola and E! News, assist in funding the construction of the studios, including the original ‘The Voice’ media center in the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity, has announced a complete line-up of A-list celebrities who decided to take off their shoes for a good cause.

What began as a staff shoe drive internally at NBCUniversal 30 Rock studios for the charity’s Japan relief efforts quickly caught on to stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Sir Elton John, sisters Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian, Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, John Krasinski, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mariska Hargitay, Yoko Ono, the TODAY show cast, and many more. Jennifer Wilson, an NBCUniversal employee who helped initiate the celebrity shoe auction, said it was the kindness of organizations like Soles4Souls during Hurricane Katrina that drew her to help.

“I’m a Louisiana girl with family in New Orleans, so I saw first-hand the destruction, pain, and uncertainty that comes with a natural disaster,” Wilson said. “I started this to help those that helped us.”

Last Thrusday, May 12, CMT premiered MUSIC BUILDS: THE CMT DISASTER RELIEF CONCERT – a live, commercial-free, 90-minute concert special designed to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the recent devastating storms, flooding and tornadoes.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, has announced a Social Media Envoy group of celebrities and leaders to inspire and encourage social media audiences to support malaria control.

It has been a busy few weeks for Ricky Martin – last Monday he presented government officials in Puerto Rico a study on human trafficking, and now he is fronting a campaign to help victims of the Haitian earthquake.

The She Bangs singer returned to his native country of Puerto Rico last week to urge the government to act on the human trafficking problem. He presented officials with a study carried out by his Ricky Martin Foundation that pinpoints the country as having a major role in the illegal sex and kidnapping trade.

“This is happening on our island,” he said. “We cannot turn our back on the victims.”

Last year, Ashton Kutcher and CNN raced to be the first to get to one million followers on Twitter. Kutcher said that if he got to one million first, he would pay for 10,000 malaria nets for Malaria No More.

He did win, and he’s keeping his promise.

On World Malaria Day 2009, the most retweeted message on Twitter was: “Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = www.MalariaNoMore.org.” Thanks to this, almost 90,000 nets will be distributed in the Senegalese towns of Seraya and Velingara.

Josh Duhamel To Lead Youth Run For Charity

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, thousands of LA youth will rally as one to run and to show an amazing demonstration of support for the millions of people affected by the Haiti devastation.

As a fund-raising vehicle for the Haitian Earthquake Relief, film and television actor, Josh Duhamel, is mobilizing relief by pulling together a youth run, “Youth Run 4 Haiti.” Duhamel has joined forces with American Red Cross of Santa Monica to inspire and empower youth around the globe to unite and Run 4 Haiti.

Josh Duhamel has a long history of supporting the American Red Cross and has taken the Santa Monica chapter under his wing. He will be joined by Ryan Seacrest at the event.
