Springsteen To Be Honored As MusiCares Person Of The Year Tonight

The sold-out MusiCares Person of the Year gala honoring Bruce Springsteen will take place Feb. 8, two days prior to the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

The event will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles. Check-in will open at 5:30 p.m. as well as a cocktail reception and silent auction. To preview some of the auction items, click here. Dinner will follow at 7:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 9 p.m.

Thanksgiving is just days away, and those residing in New Jersey and New York who struggled before Hurricane Sandy are under even greater stress to put food on the table this holiday season and beyond. Many people are struggling simply to restock their refrigerators from what was lost in the storm.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) – the largest food bank in the state – has been working to feed those who might otherwise go without food, including families, seniors and children. The FoodBank, however, has experienced two-to-three times the need for help. To help support its relief efforts and ensure that no one goes hungry, the CFBNJ announced today a partnership with celebrity auction venue CharityFolks.com.

One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from this partnership will go toward the CFBNJ and its New York-area partners.

Roger Waters will be performing with a band comprised of military veterans.

Springsteen And Friends Raise Almost $23 Million For Sandy Victims

The American Red Cross and NBCUniversal have announced that Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together, a live, one-hour benefit telethon, generated nearly $23 million in support of victims impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

A record number of individual donations by phone, text and online were accepted by the American Red Cross during the 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. time period beginning on Friday, November 2, 2012. The volume of website and phone traffic exceeded previous benefit telethons in support of the American Red Cross over the last five years.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering as a result of Superstorm Sandy,” said American Red Cross Chief Marketing Officer Peggy Dyer. “Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster. Their generous donations will go directly to those in need, and we urge the public to continue to give. We also thank the dedicated and talented team at NBCUniversal for the millions of people they have helped through this telethon.”

Team UCP Participates In Achilles Hope And Possibility 5 Miler

Team UCP, representing United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, participated Sunday, June 24th in the 2012 Achilles Hope & Possibility 5 Miler in Central Park.

The event attracted over 6,000 participants, including celebrity support from the host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart.

Team UCP, one of the largest teams to join the Achilles Hope & Possibility 5 Miler, included over 200 registered team members consisting of staff, supporters, and Honored Racers — individuals with disabilities. Team UCP’s Honored Racers accounted for over a quarter of the team and raced in a variety of capacities alongside athletes from all over the country. The team raised nearly $40,000 for UCP of NYC’s extensive programs serving over 14,000 children, adults and their families in Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

On April 29, more than 30 years to the day after a young boy named Chris was granted his wish to be a police officer for a day, Make-A-Wish Foundation supporters around the world will celebrate World Wish Day in honor of the wish that sparked a global wish-granting movement.

Make-A-Wish will mark World Wish Day with celebrations throughout the United States and 47 other countries in which it operates by celebrating wishes being granted on that day. Every 23 minutes, Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition somewhere in the world.

Many celebrities and professional athletes are granting wishes in honor of World Wish Day throughout April. Jon Stewart To Host Conversation With Bill Clinton At CGI University Event

Stephen Colbert Spoofs Link Between Money And American Politics

Warren Buffett Says Tax The Rich

Last month, in an op-ed in The New York Times, billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett addressed misconceptions about investment attitudes of some of America’s richest citizens. Buffett’s message to Congress: Stop coddling the super-rich.

“Back in the 1980s and 1990s, tax rates for the rich were far higher, and my percentage rate was in the middle of the pack. According to a theory I sometimes hear, I should have thrown a fit and refused to invest because of the elevated tax rates on capital gains and dividends. I didn’t refuse, nor did others. I have worked with investors for 60 years and I have yet to see anyone shy away from a sensible investment because of the tax rate on the potential gain.”

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart recently joined illusionist David Blaine and basketball Hall of Famer Karl Malone in Afghanistan to visit US troops with the USO.

“It was an incredible weekend … I can’t really put it into words,” said Stewart on The Daily Show last week. "People can disagree about strategies and (politics), foreign policy and things of that nature, but hopefully we can all agree that the men and women of our armed services are giving so much to our country.
