Joe Walsh To Perform At William Shatner's Charity Horse Show

William Shatner has announced that Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh will be the musical guest at this year’s Hollywood Charity Horse Show.

Shatner has been hosting the charity horse shows for the last twenty years – inspired after he watched an exhibition by children who were so severely handicapped that some of them could not hold their head up, yet there they were going through intricate exercises on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children. In 1990, Shatner hosted his first charity horse show, and the event has become a major fixture on the charity calendar.

The Hollywood Charity Horse Show is in its 22nd year.

Tony Bennett To Headline Celebrity Charity Gala For St Jude

Tony Bennett, Ray Romano and Phil Donahue will headline the celebration as stars from the entertainment industry show their support for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s 50th anniversary with a benefit gala in Los Angeles on January 7, 2012.

Tony Bennett, a personal friend of St. Jude founder – the late entertainer Danny Thomas – will perform for the star-studded crowd along with Ray Romano, a good friend of the Thomas family and an ardent supporter of St. Jude, to help commemorate what would have been Thomas’ 100th birthday. The 50th anniversary gala honors St. Jude’s commitment to saving the lives of children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases.

“My father always said there would be no St. Jude without Hollywood,” said Tony Thomas, son of Danny Thomas and one of the gala’s co-chairs. “He spent the 1950’s raising money for his dream, to build a hospital for research and care under one roof for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. He reached out to his entertainment friends, who we now know as legends, to put on benefits around the country to raise money for a hospital yet to be built. Today, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital stands as a beacon of hope for families across America. My father would be so proud that Hollywood continues to support the hospital.”

Sean Connery Joins Sea Shepherd Advisory Board

Just in time for Tax Day, Canadian icon William Shatner has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on PETA’s behalf urging the government to stop spending millions of taxpayer dollars to prop up the dying commercial seal industry.

Each year, the government bleeds $7 million in sealing subsidies for Coast Guard support, pro-sealing political campaigns, and extravagant forays to Asia to drum up markets for a widely banned product that accounts for less than 1 percent of Newfoundland’s economy.

“Citizens from coast to coast are being hammered by the harmonised sales tax, property taxes continue to soar, and inflation is driving away investment,” writes the former Captain of the Starship Enterprise. "So why does the government persist in throwing money away so that a small number of fishers can afford to go out onto the ice and bludgeon to death helpless baby seals? On behalf of my friends at PETA, I urge you to let the seal slaughter die off already.

William Shatner will be the guest of honor at a private charity party in Studio City next week to help relieve the pain and suffering of earthquake victims in Haiti and Chile.

The invitation-only event will see the former Star Trek star auction artworks from his wife, Elizabeth Shatner, and Italian-born artist Giorgio Tuscani. Money raised will go to severely injured and disabled survivors of the two earthquakes, and will provide shelters, food, water and medical care.

The event will take place at Tuscani’s antique-filled Italianate mansion, House of Angels, on Saturday, April 17. Tuscani has also generously put the mansion under the hammer for earthquake victims.

The avid equestrian will be leading his horse to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Showcasing in the 4R Performance Horses Celebrity Slide, Shatner will guide his horse in precise maneuvering and reining exercises. For the past nineteen years, William Shatner has spearheaded the Hollywood Charity Horse Show to raise money for a worthy children’s charity.

It was back in the late 1980s that Shatner first watched an exhibition by children who were so severely handicapped that some of them could not hold their head up, yet there they were going through intricate exercises on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children.

When the exhibition was over, Shatner sat, deeply affected by what he had seen. “You can’t watch these kids without knowing you have to help, somehow.” And so, in March of 1990 came the birth of the first Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Soon, other charities in need of help were added, small, grass root charities doing big time jobs.

Henry Winkler Wins Cash For Charity

Actor Henry Winkler has won £40,000 (US$56,000) for an education charity in a radio competition.

The former Happy Days star was chosen in a public vote for the “Who’s Calling Christian?” competition on Absolute Radio in the UK, in which people had to get stars to call the station in order to win £20,000 for themselves, and £40,000 for the charity of the celebrity’s choice.

“I’m just so grateful to everyone who voted for me… and you can all start your weekend knowing you’ve done a very good thing,” said Winkler on Friday. “The Teaching Awards really deserve it. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to win this for teachers.”

Held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the event attracted stars such as Jason Alexander, Vanessa Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Michelle Pfeiffer, P. Diddy, Greg Kinnear, Zachary Levi, Michael Chiklis and William Shatner, and honored the producers of Fox Sports and the TV show “Friday Night Lights”.

William Shatner is probably best known for his rendezvous in outer space and his diligence in protecting people from high hotel prices, but the high-profile actor has another project near and dear to his heart—and this venture involves horses.

Since March 2009, Shatner has been the organizer of the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. The idea for the program birthed from the actor’s viewing of a 1980 exhibition by severely handicapped children. The children – including some who could barely hold their heads up – were performing complex calisthenics on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children. Today, the Hollywood Charity Horse Show is an annual, nationally-covered event. HCHS begins with world-class reining horses and riders competing for honors by performing spectacular stunts and tricks. Mandy Moore is just one of the celebrities expected to attend Friendly House’s 19th Annual Awards Luncheon this Saturday, October 18.

Hosted by 8 Simple Rules’ Katey Sagal, the event will honor Candy Spelling – mother of Tori Spelling – as Woman of the Year. Spelling is a well-known civic leader in Los Angeles, as well as a Commissioner for the Department of Recreation and Parks, and a member of the board of L.A.‘s Best, the Mayor’s group that provides reading programs to schools in L.A.

Friendly House is an organization that provides a safe place for women to overcome addictions and be reintegrated into the community. Founded in 1951, the facility was the first treatment center in the US devoted to women recovering from substance and alcohol abuse, and became a model for similar facilities around the world. Over 6,500 women have been treated at Friendly House, with a success rate of 72%. The current location of the facility was donated by William Shatner in 2001, in honor of his late wife.

A bevy of stars stepped out on the catwalk on Saturday night for the 5th annual Runway For Life benefit in Beverly Hills.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ross McCall, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Jonny Lee Miller, Daisy Fuentes, Jason Alexander, Nancy O’Dell, Cybill Shepherd, Natasha Henstridge and Jaime Pressley were among the stars to show their fashionable sides in the fundraiser for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and William Shatner was spotted in the audience.

Over 1,000 guests attended the event – held at the Beverly Hilton – which raised well over $1 million for St. Judes. Runway for Life is one of the biggest fundraising events of the hospital’s calendar, and has netted over $6.5 million since it was first staged.
