Sean Connery Joins Sea Shepherd Advisory Board

Academy Award-winning actor and producer Sean Connery, best known as the original James Bond, has joined the International Advisory Board of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the world’s leading marine wildlife conservation nonprofit organization.

Connery joins the SSCS advisory board alongside two valued new additions: four-time Women’s World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore and Emmy Award-winning Writer, Producer and Director/Co-Creator of The Simpsons, Sam Simon.

In announcing her husband’s alliance with the leading global marine conservation non-profit, Micheline Roquebrune, Connery’s wife of 36 years, said, “It’s natural that Sean and I bring our support to the mandatory mission of Sea Shepherd.”

Stars To Attend Andrea Bocelli Foundation Launch

The world’s highest selling solo classical musician, Andrea Bocelli, will launch the Andrea Bocelli Foundation with a star-studded event produced by Jo Champa and Studiomusica and presented by the Grammy Museum Foundation on December 9.

The trustees of St. John’s Health Center Foundation and the Irene Dunne Guild will host the 18th Caritas Gala, Saturday, Oct. 15 at The Beverly Wilshire.

Actor Pierce Brosnan will receive the Caritas award. The two-time Golden Globe nominee is internationally known for his work both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes as a producer. “The extraordinary passion Pierce Brosnan brings to his family, his profession and his community reflects the true spirit of Caritas. It is for this and his great friendship to St. John’s that he is being honored with the award,” said Donna Tuttle, foundation chair.

Dr. Donald Morton is being recognized with the Spirit of St. John’s award for his life-saving contributions to cancer research at John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at St. John’s.

“Like the majority of people, I was shocked and saddened by the events that took place this summer when rioting spread across some of the UK’s major cities,” he writes. "As the nation reflects on the chaos, we must remember that the vast majority of young people were not involved and are incredibly proud of their communities.

“The riots have left these communities devastated and the young people living there increasingly vulnerable. It is these young people who need to be shown they can still have a positive future.

Paul McCartney Speaks Out Over Whaling

Paul McCartney has joined the fight against law changes that will make whaling legal.

In a World Society for the Protection of Animals statement this week, Sir Paul said: “It’s time to end the cruel slaughter of whales and leave these magnificent creatures alone. In the 21st century how can we even contemplate killing whales – or any animal – in such barbaric ways? Governments should act on their responsibilities and protect these beautiful creatures.”

As the International Whaling Commission (IWC) opens its 62nd annual meeting in Agadir, Morocco today, Sir Paul and WSPA strongly condemn a proposal which would effectively lift the ban on commercial whaling and give a green light to the industrial slaughter of almost 1,400 whales next year. The deadly proposal, published by the Chair and Vice-Chair of the IWC, is expected to be voted on by the IWC’s 88 member nations this week.

Pierce Brosnan is urging governments of the world to say no to plans to allow commercial whaling.

The actor – who narrates the Disney documentary Oceans – is outraged that US and other governments may relax anti whaling laws.

“They [the U.S. government] seem to be in favor of allowing Japan and Norway to go out and hunt whales again,” says Brosnan. “It means they can go out there and start killing whales. It’s in moratorium so it’s not determined how many they can kill. Normally, there’s no justification for killing these creatures. Scientifically, there’s no justification. So if you want to do something about stopping the possible slaughter of whales, then you have to pick up the phone and call The White House.”

Animal activists were out in force at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, March 20, for The Humane Society of the United States’ 24th annual Genesis Awards.

Haiti had been a country already in crisis with little clean drinking water, food, adequate housing or medical help. Alec Baldwin Hits The Slopes For Charity

Alec Baldwin wasn’t in Hollywood to receive his Golden Globe for 30 Rock on Sunday – he was busy at a charity event in Alberta.

The star took part in the Fairmont Banff Spring Sports Invitational – held annually since 1987 – to benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization founded by Robert J. Kennedy, Jr to protect North American waterways. Four days of skiing were held on the slopes, in which members of the public could ski alongside celebrities.

Previous years have seen Pierce Brosnan, Jason Priestley, Kelsey Grammer, Josie Bissett, and Elle Driver hit the slopes for the event.
