Regina King Makes It Real For Breast Cancer

TV viewers may have caught Regina King in a new TV movie this month, but most people are unaware of her inspiration: the actress signed up to appear in the film to pay tribute to the five women in her life who have won and lost breast cancer battles.

Living Proof – which went to air on Lifetime on Saturday, October 18 – told the true story of doctor Dennis Slamon, who developed ground-breaking breast cancer drug Herperin. Also appearing were Harry Connick Jr. and Trudie Styler.

“I knew pretty much about breast cancer and the statistics,” King told BlackVoices.com. “I have five women that have been in my life that have been affected by breast cancer, so I would say that it’s close to home. Three of them are survivors and two of them weren’t. I would say that it’s close to home for everyone, unfortunately… The reality and the seriousness of that didn’t make it hard for my heart to think of the women I know who battled with the disease and the children who were left behind by those women who died. All of that was right in my heart. It’s just really tapping into that.”

10th Annual Design Care Event Attracts Celebrities

Actress Holly Robinson-Peete and her husband, former NFL player Rodney Peete, held their 10th annual “Design Care” event benefiting The HollyRod Foundation – which raises money for adults and children battling debilitating disease and life circumstances including Parkinson’s Disease and autism – on July 19.

The Design Care event is an evening of fashion, music and charity. What started as a gathering of 150 people at the home of Holly and Rodney has grown to a guest list of 500 people. To date, DesignCare has raised over $2 million.

This year, the HollyRod Foundation honored Cedric the Entertainer with the 2008 HollyRod Humanitarian Award; businessman James Warsaw with the Matthew T. Robinson Award of Courage; and philanthropist Lisette Ackerberg with the Angel on the Path Award. The first annual Champion Award was presented by hollyrod4kids to Jason “JMac” Mc Elwain – the teen basketball player with autism.

The live auction led by John Salley featured exclusive items such as a Smart Car courtesy of Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills, a trip for two to attend a taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago, and a MotoPure H12 diamond encrusted Bluetooth headset among other luxurious items.

Celebrities in attendance included Vanessa Williams, Amy Yasbeck, Lisa Renna, Cheri Oteri, Eric LaSalle, and Regina King, and recording artist Maxwell performed at this year’s event.

The foundation was founded in 1997 in honor of Holly’s father, Matthew T. Robinson, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1982 at age of 46.

Magic Johnson Receives 3rd Annual USA TODAY Hollywood Hero Award

NBA Legend, entrepreneur and philanthropist Earvin "Magic" Johnson received the 3rd annual USA TODAY Hollywood Hero Award presented by USA TODAY President and Publisher Craig A. Moon. A long-time humanitarian and social advocate, Johnson was honored for his work in entertainment, underserved communities and the founding of the Magic Johnson Foundation.

“He’s the perfect Hollywood Hero,” said USA TODAY president and publisher Craig Moon, “the award is about someone who gives more than just their name or money. Magic is a man who gives his time.”

The caliber of celebrities who came out to honor Magic Johnson for his outstanding work in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention in minority communities was nothing short of spectacular. Guests including Chaka Khan, Samuel L. Jackson, Regina King, Russell Simmons and others, offered their words of praise to Magic Johnson, and by the end of the night there was barely a dry eye in the house.

“I want to thank you for loving mankind, " said Chaka Kahn during her speech.

“He showed me that you can live and be vital and change from one thing to another,” said Samuel L Jackson, “And that affects us and a lot of other people.”

“Thank you very much for asking me to be here, that in itself is an honor,” said Regina King, who spoke openly about her adoration of Magic and his wife Cookie. “Every time I see [Cookie] she has something incredible to say and represents us women so well.” She said, “You remind us that we can’t back off. As you are nurturing your souls, and fortifying your character, it’s about you inspiring us to be better, to want to be better, and I thank you so much for being you, I appreciate you.”

Founder of Def Jam records, Russell Simmons gave a heartfelt speech which highlighted Magic’s courage, “Its important to acknowledge the courage, to remind people to be courageous,” said Simmons, “The inspiration and knowledge you give goes way beyond what people see. You are truly an inspirational image in this country and the world.”

Magic’s wife Cookie explained her feelings about when Magic was ready to announce that he was HIV-positive, “I was absolutely against it,” she said. “At that time, HIV was a huge stigma. … But he said, ‘I have to do this because it’s the only way I can help save lives.’ He risked his own reputation, and that’s what makes him my hero.”

Words such as courage, inspiration, love, admiration, respect, thank-you, and perseverance were prevalent in all speeches.
And when Magic hugged each guest speaker after his or her words, he was quick to share his thoughts on what motives him, “My kids hug me, and that’s the only congratulations you want.”

Chanté Moore and her nine-piece band, including Kenny Lattimore, performed at the gala, which was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Other guests included: LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Paul Sorvino, Mo’Nique, Phil Jackson (LA Lakers Coach), Jeanie Buss (LA Lakers Exec), Kurt Rambis, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Susan DeLaurentis (Producer), Miguel A. Nunez (Kickin’ It Old School), William Abadie (Cashmere Mafia), Jimmy Jean-Louis (Heroes), Steven Sawalich (Director), Telma Hopkins (Love Guru), Judge Joe Brown, and the recipient of the first USA Hollywood Hero Award, Zina Bethune.

The USA TODAY Hollywood Hero Award is presented annually to an entertainment industry humanitarian who has made remarkable contributions of time and energies with a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the quality of life for others. The USA TODAY Hollywood Hero Award recipient is unique in that his or her efforts extend far beyond a charitable contribution or simply lending one’s celebrity to enhance a cause or concern.

The Magic Johnson Foundation, founded by Earvin “Magic” Johnson in 1991, works to develop programs and support community-based organizations that address the educational, health and social needs of ethnically diverse, urban communities. Over the past few years, the Magic Johnson Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 million to community-based organizations that focus on HIV/AIDS education and prevention, supported more than 800 minority high school students with college scholarships (through the Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program), opened 20 Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers located in underserved communities across the country, and provided a range of community-based initiatives including an annual Children’s Mardi Gras and holiday toy drive.

Buffy In The Buff For Charity

A group of celebrities have bared their skin in a new campaign to increase awareness of skin diseases.

As reported in an earlier article, former Buffy The Vampire Slayer actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has agreed to auction naked photos of herself on eBay, to raise money for the Coalition of Skin Diseases. It can now be revealed that she will be joined in the campaign by Hilary Duff, Minnie Driver, Dave Navarro, Amanda Bynes, Jacqueline Bisset, Regina King, and John Leguizamo, and the autographed photos will be available until February 22 at eBay.

The auction is part of Vaseline’s “Skin Is Amazing” campaign, and the special skin portraits demonstrate what each celebrity finds amazing about their skin.

“My versatility comes from facial expressions and how I hold my body,” said John Leguizamo. “My skin has to be able to take some punishment, whether I’m making faces or doing stunts in movies. It’s how I make my living.”

Each photo was shot by renowned photographer Walter Chin, and features a personal quote from the featured celebrity.

The Coalition of Skin Diseases is an organization that advocates on behalf of individuals who suffer from diseases of the skin by supporting clinical research, fostering physician and patient education, and generating general awareness on skin safety. They also strive to improve the quality of life for those affected.

Another actress famous for baring her skin was the late Anna Nicole Smith, and a new charity has just been launched in her name.

Smith’s former partner, Howard K. Stern, announced the new charity on the first anniversary of the former Playmate’s death on Friday. The Anna Nicole Smith & Daniel Wayne Smith Charitable Foundation – also named in honor of her son, who died in 2006 – is expected to generate funds for a number of causes that Smith supported, including those relating to children, the elderly, and AIDS.

“Hopefully it will grow, help more people each year, and eventually be headed by her daughter Dannielynn,” said Stern. “All donations through February 2008 will benefit a charity in the Bahamas for underprivileged and at risk youths that Anna Nicole wanted to help.”
