Cynthia Nixon Films Cancer PSA

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has joined with actress Edie Falco to appear in a new Stand Up To Cancer PSA designed to educate cancer patients and their loved ones about the increased risk of infection during cancer treatment and the importance of learning how to manage one’s risk.

Often patients are overwhelmed with medical information once they have been diagnosed with cancer. Many do not fully understand the risk of infection during chemotherapy and the potential impact it has on one’s overall treatment success. The campaign’s goal is to encourage cancer patients and their caregivers to actively work with their physicians to learn what can be done to lower the risk of infection before starting chemotherapy.

“Learning you have cancer comes as a complete shock and, at first, makes you feel powerless,” says Falco, SU2C ambassador and cancer survivor. “You really need to take control early. It is important to work with your team of physicians at the outset to understand how to minimize your risk of infection and stay strong throughout your treatment plan.”

“Being told that you have cancer is devastating,” adds Nixon, SU2C ambassador and cancer survivor. “But you need to stay empowered. Through this Stand Up To Cancer campaign, we hope to encourage cancer patients and their loved ones to get all the facts, including how you can minimize the risk of infection during treatment.”

The public service campaign, “Manage Your Treatment,” includes both print and broadcast announcements, and was created by Stand Up to Cancer with support from Amgen. Starting this fall, the 30- and 60-second broadcast spots will begin airing and the print version of the PSA will appear in major women and lifestyle magazines. Cancer patients are at higher risk for infection due to a compromised immune system caused by both the cancer itself and, often, by chemotherapy treatment. Neutropenia, a low white blood cell count, is a common and potentially dangerous side effect of chemotherapy. It can lead to a heightened risk of infection that can require hospitalization and be life-threatening. Each year, 60,000 cancer patients are hospitalized for chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Neutropenia also can disrupt chemotherapy treatment, including both dose delays and dose reductions, which — for certain types of cancer — may impede a patient’s ability to achieve the best long-term results.

Annette Bening To Tell Us All About Eve

Annette Bening is to star in a charity reading of an Academy Award winning screenplay.

All About Eve scooped six Oscars when it was released in 1950, and on November 10 Bening will join several other performers in an evening honoring that achievement. The reading will benefit the Actors Fund of America, an organization committed to professionals in performing arts and entertainment and providing programs and services for those who are in need, crisis or transition.

Bening will read the part of Margo Channing, originally played by Bette Davis, and will be joined on stage by Tony Award winner Brian Bedford as Addison DeWitt, Tony nominee Peter Gallagher as Bill, Angela Lansbury as Birdie, Cynthia Nixon as Karen and John Slattery as Lloyd.

The reading will take place at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in Manhattan. Emmy and DGA Award winner John Erman will direct the evening, and showtime is at 7:30 PM.

What Cynthia Nixon Shared With Her Mom

Actress Cynthia Nixon, best known as Miranda from Sex and the City, auctioned two tickets to May 12th’s World premier of the new Sex and the City movie, including a return flight to London and chauffeur service to the show. Money raised from the 3-day auction is to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Nixon became an ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure after her own successful lumpectomy and radiation therapy in 2006.

“As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, and a breast cancer survivor myself, I have experienced the disease from both sides. I will do whatever it takes to end breast cancer,” said Nixon.

Komen for the Cure, which was created as promised by Nancy Brinker to her dying sister, Susan Komen, intends to do just that – end breast cancer. It has invested $1 billion in research to date, as well as providing community health programs and raising awareness campaigns.

Nixon says, “One of my main reasons I got involved [with Komen for the Cure] was that I feel like I have a very concrete story to tell. It’s my mother’s and my story, which is be proactive, get your mammograms, don’t be afraid. Luckily, because of Susan G. Komen, and because of all the medical advances in the last 25 plus years, this is a really handleable disease if you catch it in time.”
