Stars Help Launch Bill To End Cruelty In Circuses

Yesterday on Capitol Hill, renowned celebrity animal protectionists Bob Barker and Jorja Fox joined London-based Animal Defenders International (ADI), the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and members of Congress to launch a Bill that will change the way in which animals are used in the name of entertainment in the USA.

This historic launch comes at a crucial time as the UK Government considers the plight of wild animals currently languishing in circuses and follows the Commons debate in June where MPs voted overwhelmingly for a ban. ADI is calling on the Government to follow the lead of the U.S. Congress, and act once and for all to end the suffering.

Ke$ha and Iggy Pop have joined PETA’s campaign to stop the barbaric slaughter of seals in Canada.

According to PETA, “Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to descend on the ice to club hundreds of thousands of seals to death and sell the animals’ pelts on the international fur market. Sealers routinely hook these fuzzy creatures in the eyes, cheeks, or mouth to avoid damaging their fur and then drag the animals across the ice. The seal-hunters crush baby seals’ skulls in with their clubs before they skin them.”

Jorja Fox And Bob Barker Welcome Rescued Lions

London-based Animal Defenders International’s record breaking ‘Operation Lion Ark’, a rescue that began in Bolivia last November, has ended with the 25 lucky lions touching down at Denver International Airport en route to their specially constructed 80 acre enclosure at The Wild Animal Sanctuary, Denver, Colorado. Operation Lion Ark is the biggest rescue and airlift of lions ever seen.

These 25 lucky lions have been on the journey of a lifetime, leaving behind suffering and deprivation from their time spent in circuses in Bolivia. Up until now, all they have known is deplorable conditions, neglect and abuse. They have been brought back from the brink and now paradise awaits them.

British Stars Join Operation Lion Ark

A pride of celebrities have pledged their support to a record breaking lion rescue and are urging people to give to the appeal.

The initiative is called “Operation Lion Ark”, and is the biggest-ever animal rescue of its kind. Now a host of celebrities are urging people to get behind it and send a donation to help “save the lions”. This month, Animal Defenders International (ADI) will airlift 25 rescued lions from Bolivia to the USA but are urgently calling for support for the operation.

Jorja Fox Helps Rescue Circus Lions From Bolivia

Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses landed yesterday at San Francisco airport, before heading on to a life of luxury at the ARK 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County.

ADI, which has previously rescued and relocated animals in Europe, South America and Africa have described it as one of the most complex logistical operation they have ever undertaken but say it will be worth all of the effort when the animals walk free.

CSI actress Jorja Fox, the ADI spokesperson for the operation, greeted the lions at San Francisco airport.

Animal welfare warriors shouldn’t forget The Humane Society’s 24th annual Genesis Awards this Saturday, March 20.

This year will see Melanie Griffith present a lifetime achievement award to her mother, 80-year-old Tippi Hedren, for dedicating the last 40 years to the protection of animals and raising awareness of the exotic pet trade.

“Tippi is an extraordinary woman – both a hands-on caregiver to 63 discarded big cats at the Shambala Preserve, as well as a tireless activist who continues to work in support of federal legislation that would ban the breeding of and the trade in exotic animals in the U.S.,” said Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Hollywood office of The Humane Society of the United States and executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards.

Over the past weekend, Jorja Fox hosted the fifth annual Spotlight Humane: Chicago.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) sponsored the event that was filled with music, dancing, auctions, and speeches in hopes of ending dogfighting. This fundraiser benefits the End Dogfighting in Chicago program, which works to reform dogfighters and change people’s view of pitbulls.

PETA has recruited some big names for support of its latest anti-seal hunting campaign and has launched an ad campaign with their help.

Stars such as Jennie Garth, Rachael Leigh Cook, Kelly Osbourne, Jorja Fox, Tricia Helfer, Perez Hilton, Shane Mosley and many more are featured in the new ads.

“Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of seals,” states PETA on its website. “Baby seals, some merely weeks old, have their skulls smashed in or are shot for their fur. Many of these gentle animals may not even have eaten their first solid meals or taken their first swim before they are slaughtered.”

The stars gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, March 28, for The Humane Society’s 23rd annual Genesis Awards, held in tribute of the organization’s ProtectSeals Campaign.

Special guests such as internationally acclaimed photographer Nigel Barker, Corey Feldman, Hal Sparks, Jorja Fox, James Cromwell, “Bones” star Emily Deschanel, former Oakland Raider Jarrod Cooper, Jennifer Coolidge, Carrie Ann Inaba, “Big Love’s” Ginnifer Goodwin and many more were on hand to present awards to a variety of celebrities, shows, and activists who have spent the last year making the world a better place for animals.

The major award of the night – the Wyler Award – went to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi for using their wedding and Ellen’s talkshow as an opportunity to publicize to a broad audience their ethical decision to avoid animal products in the hope of influencing public behavior. After viewing videotaped congratulations from Sir Paul McCartney, both DeGeneres and de Rossi spoke about their journey toward ethical living and the changes they have made in their lives to reduce animal suffering.
