J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) is proud to unveil a special new PSA campaign entitled “Help Haiti Home” featuring actors and artists such as Sean Penn, Edward Norton, Miley Cyrus, Zooey Deschanel, Sarah Silverman, Rainn Wilson, LL Cool J, Eric Dane and Pras describing what home means to them, connecting the dots to the struggles many Haitian people still face.

The project was conceived by actress and advocate Soleil Moon Frye after an inspiring trip to Haiti and a visit to J/P HRO Petionville Camp. She produced the spots and co-directed them along with the help of her brother, renowned photographer Meeno Peluce,

Sarah Silverman Thinks Circus Elephants Are No Laughing Matter

Sarah Silverman may be known for her cutting humor, but when it comes to animal abuse, she’s not joking around. The comedian has sent a deadly serious letter on PETA’s behalf to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calling on the government to remove four ailing elephants— including a fellow Sara—from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

In the letter, Silverman explains that recent veterinary evidence shows that the elephants are being forced to perform grueling tricks despite suffering from lameness and, in two cases, arthritis—the number one reason for euthanasia in captive elephants.

“I am writing to urge you to immediately seize four ailing elephants traveling with the Ringling Bros. circus,” Sarah wrote. "My friends at PETA have expert veterinary evidence showing that Nicole, Karen, Juliette, and Sara are being forced to perform grueling tricks despite suffering from lameness, and, in the cases of Nicole and Karen, arthritis as well. Arthritis is the number one reason for euthanasia in captive elephants, and veterinarians have cautioned that if their situation is not improved, Juliette and Sara will suffer life-threatening arthritis just as Karen and Nicole do.

Shakira has been busy raising awareness of her charity, Pies Descalzos, in Europe lately, and has just announced that she will be heading to Israel next week to continue her mission of highlighting the importance of education around the world.

The Colombian singer was in Germany last week to talk with the German Development Ministry, who have agreed to support her Barefoot Foundation (Pies Descalzos) by donating to a school in the Colombian city of Cartagena for children from poor backgrounds.

“The German government is an example for other world powers to get involved in the issue of education,” she said. “Education is the key to eradicating poverty and for peace and global stability.”

Glee star Darren Criss spread a little Christmas cheer last month by helping charity at his Los Angeles concerts.

The actor performed sold-out shows at The Roxy in West Hollywood just prior to Christmas, in front of an audience that included stars such as Matthew Morrison. Audience members were encouraged to fill 15 large sacks with toys on behalf of Toys for Tots to be distributed to kids who would otherwise miss out on gifts.

The singer will also donate a portion of ticket sales to the charity.

Comedian Sarah Silverman is the latest celebrity to advocate for healthy school lunches, urging Congress to support the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010, a bill that will help schools serve healthier meal options.

“I’m writing to you about something that has shocked and offended me,” she wrote in a letter to Congressman George Miller. "And trust me when I say it takes a lot to shock and offend me. Some of the foods we’re feeding kids in schools are repulsive—and that unhealthy food is feeding the childhood obesity epidemic.

“All kids – vegetarian or not – should have healthy options. I think that we forget the simple fact that what we put in our bodies directly affects our bodies. Many kids aren’t able to bring lunches from home – they have to eat what’s in the lunch line. Without healthful options in the cafeteria, we’re doing our children and the future of our country a great disservice.
