Celebrities And TV News Heavyweights Donate To Diversity In Journalism

A teen pop rock idol, country superstars, and internationally renowned television journalists are contributing to an online auction for the NPC Scholarship Fund to promote diversity in newsrooms. Sponsored by The National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the charity auction offers opportunities to bid on celebrity memorabilia and win “experience” visits with America’s most-influential news personalities from nationally-recognized news shows.

A winning bidder could win a personalized Gibson Flying V Faded guitar signed by Nick Jonas, the youngest of the Jonas Brothers or an autographed guitar from Grammy Award-winning country music star Toby Keith. Lucky news junkies could win visits with their favorite news correspondents by bidding on:

A visit to a production of “Amanpour” and coffee with its host Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s International Correspondent, during Thanksgiving week New York City.

A meeting with FOX News’ Greta van Susteren, ranked by Forbes Magazine among the world’s 100 most powerful women, at a live taping of "On the Record – and an appearance on her internet news show “Greta Live Wire.”

Tickets to the Sept. 28 National Press Club Luncheon with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, and a chance to have your photo taken with Burns at a VIP reception at the Press Club in in Washington, D.C.

The auction benefits the National Press Club Scholarship Fund for Diversity in Journalism/ Persina Scholarship and raises funds for four-year college scholarships for minority students who plan to pursue a career in print, broadcast or online journalism. The NPC Scholarship Fund works to promote the cause of diversity in newsrooms and has helped launch the careers of talented minority journalists. The NPC’s Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library has distributed nearly $600 ,000 in scholarships to bright young people who needed financial assistance to attend journalism schools around the country.

The National Press Club, founded in 1908 in Washington, D.C., has more than 3,500 members worldwide. Broadway Barks 11th Annual Adopt-A-Thon

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters will host the eleventh annual BROADWAY BARKS!, a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon benefiting New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.

The event, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the SPCA and PEDIGREE with additional sponsorship by the New York Times will take place on Saturday, July 11 in Shubert Alley (located between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue). The festivities begin at 3:30 p.m.; celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal shelters will take place between 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Moore and Peters will be joined by such luminaries of stage and screen as Ashanti (The Wiz), Jayne Atkinson (Blithe Spirit), Stephanie J. Block (9 to 5), Tovah Feldshuh (Irena’s Vow), Ernie Hudson (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone), Audra McDonald (Twelfth Night), Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), and Will Swenson (Hair).

Last year’s BROADWAY BARKS! attracted an audience of more than 7,000 theater fans, pet owners, and animal lovers, and featured the participation of 26 animal shelters from the New York City area, as well as Broadway stars from the hit shows of the season.

BROADWAY BARKS 11 will feature a sampling of potential pets from several New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Animal Haven, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, ASPCA, AC&C, BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New York, Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart, Tigger Foundation, Arf, and Save Kitty. Representatives from these organizations will be on hand to offer educational information on spaying and neutering.

Bernadette Peters Stands Tall On Board

Standing Tall announced today that two-time Tony award-winning actress/singer/comedienne Bernadette Peters has joined its Board of Directors.

“Standing Tall has created a remarkable program, unique in the area, that supports the most severely disabled children in New York City,” said Ms. Peters. “The children at Standing Tall gain mobility and independence by actively using their bodies to learn to walk and talk as they also learn reading, math, literature, music, science, and art. I am excited to support this innovative and powerful approach to improving the lives of children with significant disabilities.”

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters’ Broadway Barks will hold its tenth annual dog and cat adopt-a-thon July 12 in New York.

An increasingly popular event attended by over 6000 people last year, actors Glenn Close, Mario Lopez and an entourage of Broadway performers will be on hand at this year’s event to present homeless animals for adoption. The animals come from various New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.

Broadway Barks was originally founded by Moore and Peters to promote pet adoption. However, it has also become a valuable link between the various independent shelters and rescue groups for promotion and fund raising, and is entering into public education on responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter, pet i.d., and to simply inform about the bleak predicament of the city’s homeless dogs and cats.

Besides an afternoon of festivities, an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia to benefit attending shelters, and finding permanent homes for so many animals, Peters will be on hand to sign copies of her children’s book, Broadway Barks. The illustrated book, about a dog who finds himself alone in a city park, comes with a reading of the story on CD and an original song performed by Bernadette Peters. Proceeds of book sales go, naturally, to the Broadway Barks organization.
