Bo Derek Speaks Out Against Shark Finning

Bo Derek joined lawmakers at the California state Capitol on Monday promoting a bill that would ban selling, trading or possessing shark fins.

“Sharks have been around for nearly 400 million years, and yet many stocks may be wiped out in a single human generation due to the increasing demand for shark fins,” Derek – who is a US Secretary of State Special Envoy against wildlife trafficking – told the Senate Appropriations Committee.

U.S. law stops the practice of shark finning in US waters, but cannot stop it in international waters.The bill, which was approved by the Assembly in May, was sent to the suspense file, which is reserved for bill that could cost the state money.

The first annual WildAid Charity Gala will take place in San Francisco this week, honoring celebrity NBA legend Yao Ming and featuring honorary hosts such as Jackie Chan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Norton and Bo Derek.

The event will celebrate the organization’s global conservation work, and will honor Ming for his help in reducing the consumption of shark fin soup in China.

Muhammad Ali’s annual celebrity charity Fight Night is to return to Arizona this month.

Celebrity Fight Night XVII will be hosted by Grammy Award-winning superstar of country music Reba McEntire, who is returning for her sixth time as emcee. The black tie event will begin with cocktails and a silent auction with dinner, an exciting live auction and entertainment to follow. Billy Crystal will make a special introduction of Muhammad Ali and multi-platinum recording artist Matchbox Twenty will open the musical portion of the evening, followed by a performance from Grammy Award-winning vocalist Kelly Clarkson. Additional performers will include the Top 12 American Idol 2011 finalists, Bret Michaels, Jackie Evancho and Lee Greenwood, under the direction of David Foster – who is returning for his 12th consecutive year as the evening’s Musical Director.

This year, Muhammad Ali will honor Halle Berry, Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons, former NBA and NFL owner Red McCombs and No. 1 ranked LPGA Champion Cristie Kerr with the 2011 Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night Awards. Kevin Costner & Modern West will perform at the official after-party immediately following the event.

Yao Ming To Be Honored At WildAid Charity Gala

The first annual WildAid Charity Gala will take place in San Francisco in May, honoring celebrity NBA legend Yao Ming.

The event will celebrate the organization’s global conservation work, and will honor Ming for his help in reducing the consumption of shark fin soup in China.

The basketballer fronted a PSA campaign in China in 2010 to raise awareness of the fact that up to 70 million sharks are stripped of their fins and left to flounder on the sea bed every year to supply soup in the country.

Bo Derek Visits Canada For WildAid

Bo Derek scored a perfect “10” for the environment when she visited Kelowna in Canada last week for WildAid.

The actress – who is a US Special Envoy of the Secretary of State for Wildlife Trafficking – was there for conservation meetings with six high-ranking officials from WildAid at the invitation of the Charles Fipke Foundation.

“Habitat is a problem and poaching is a problem, but you can solve the problem very quickly if people stop consuming,” said Derek. “The results are immediate. It is about public education and awareness.”

The legend himself, Muhammad Ali, was the guest of honor at Celebrity Fight Night XV, held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday. And this year’s event once again lived up to its reputation as one the nation’s largest fundraising efforts, as celebrities and sport stars lined up to support the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

Since it’s inception 15 years ago, Celebrity Fight Night has raised more than $52 million for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center in Phoenix and other charities.

Flockhart, Ford to Attend Peace Over Violence Benefit

Calista Flockhart is set to host the 37th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner benefitting Peace Over Violence this Friday night, November 7th.

Flockhart, who is the National Spokesperson for the charity, will be joined by special guests Harrison Ford, Bo Derek, Jane Seymour, James Keach and many others. Honorary Co-Chairs for the event include Cheryl Burke and Eve Ensler.

The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this weekend to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 25, and will honor Denzel Washington for his charity work.

This year celebrates 30 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 18th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.

Harrison Ford Gets In Behind Tiger Initiative

Hollywood giants Harrison Ford, Bo Derek, and Robert Duvall attended an event yesterday to throw their support behind a new global initiative by the World Bank to save tigers from extinction.

The event, held at Washington’s Smithsonian National Zoo, launched the global development agency’s new Tiger Conservation Initiative, a program that will bring together scientists and governments to try to halt the killing and illegal trade in tiger skins, meat and body parts used in traditional Asian medicines.

“I’m here to celebrate the World Bank’s plan to form a global alliance of conservation partners, to work with the tiger range nations in order to secure a future for these magnificent creatures,” said Ford, Indiana Jones star and environmental warrior. “By committing to help wild tigers, the World Bank is sounding its intention to be a global leader in biodiversity conservation.”
