Prince Charles' Charity Promises Riot Donation

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall recently met young people from some of the communities most affected by the London riots at The Prince’s Trust centre in Hackney.

The visit comes as The Prince of Wales’ youth charity – The Prince’s Trust – announces plans to double its support for young people across five of the areas hardest hit by the England riots, including Manchester, Birmingham and the London communities of Hackney, Tottenham and Croydon.

The Trust is planning a £2.5 million investment in these areas, giving disadvantaged young people positive opportunities to keep their lives on track. As well as committing £1 million from funds already raised, the charity is calling on the business community to back a £1.5 million fundraising drive to raise the rest of the cash.

Duchess Of Cornwall Donates Books To Charity

The Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles, yesterday donated her own books to Oxfam in support of the charity’s nationwide Book Donation Drive.

During a visit to the Hay Festival Camilla visited the Oxfam bookshop and donated a children’s book called Dog Loves Books which she had signed. She also donated two books written by her son Tom Parker Bowles – one of which was signed by the author himself.

The Book Donation Drive has an ambitious target of attracting an extra 330,000 book donations over a three-week appeal period, which could raise over £750,000 for Oxfam’s life-changing work around the world. Last year’s donation drive resulted in donations of 300,000 extra books, and Oxfam is hoping to go 30% better this year. The sale of just one book donated to Oxfam is enough to pay for 18 bars of soap to prevent disease during a disaster; and the sale of three books could provide ten days’ worth of basic food rations for a family in an emergency situation.

Charles And Camilla Rock The Royal Albert Hall For Charity

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall attended a massive charity rock concert in London last night to benefit the Prince’s Trust.

Phil Collins, Tom Jones, Jamie Cullum, Eric Clapton, Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Status Quo, Live Aid creator Midge Ure and many others hit the stage at the Royal Albert Hall on November 17 for the charity’s Rock Gala 2010. The evening was hosted by comedian Rob Brydon, Barry Humphries as his hilarious alter ego Dame Edna Everage. The show was filmed in 3D for a future release.

In the 1980s The Prince’s Trust was synonymous with the Rock Gala. The fundraising concerts were created when the UK economy was gripped by inflation, strikes and high unemployment following recession. Britain’s youth had little hope and no future. The Trust called upon supporters including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Brian May and Tina Turner to form ‘super groups’, raising money to help the most disadvantaged young people.

The Duchess Of Cornwall Honors Brooke Fundraiser

The Duchess of Cornwall, president of the Brooke animal welfare charity, has recognised a UK teenager, Emily Hanstock, for raising £3,000 pounds to help suffering horses, donkeys and mules in foreign lands, according to The Press Association.

Dorothy Brooke, the organisation’s founder, set up an equine hospital in 1934 – called Old War Horse Memorial Hospital – to address the appalling condition of ex-WWI British horses, emaciated and mistreated on the streets of Cairo. The Duchess recalled her cavalry officer father voicing similar anxieties for the horses being taken to Egypt.

Today, Brooke supports clinics caring for over half a million horses per year and training owners in the poorest parts of Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the Middle East. In communities where people earn less than a dollar a day, these animals are vital to the survival of many families.

Prince Charles Wears The Badge Of Heroes

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were out and about in Norfolk for charity earlier this week.

The pair attended the Sandringham Flower Show and were given wristbands and badges by Help for Heroes to wear. The badge is a new initiative created to be worn by police in England and Wales who were barred from wearing the wristband because of a strict dress policy.

Norfolk Chief Constable Ian McPherson said Charles was the first person in the country to receive the badge, which features the colors of the three armed forces and is designed for the use of police officers.

Camilla Paints For Charity

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, did more than create goodwill when she visited a cancer care center in London recently – she created artworks as well.

The wife of Prince Charles added the finishing touches to a nature collage made by patients at one of the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre’s – of which she is president – art therapy classes during a trip last week.

The unit, at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, west London, is one of six across the country that offers a free-of-charge domestic haven for cancer patients to receive emotional and psychological support in a homely and relaxed environment.
