Celebrities Back Feeding America Hunger Action Month

Celebrities, government leaders, major U.S. corporations and grass-roots volunteers across the nation will join together in September to support Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month – a multi-faceted effort to mobilize the public to end hunger in the United States.

Dozens of national and local events are planned to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of hunger in our nation, and to motivate everyone — from children to grandparents, and from farmers to Fortune 500 executives — to take action to help feed the more than 49 million Americans who frequently struggle to find enough nutritious food to feed themselves and their families.

“Hunger is at a crisis level in our nation. Feeding America fed 37 million Americans in 2009, an increase of more than 12 million in just four short years. More than one-third of the households we interviewed for our Hunger in America 2010 study told us that they are sometimes completely without food. That’s the bad news,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. “The good news is that so many individuals and companies have stepped forward to help us end hunger. Last year more than 700,000 Americans volunteered for the Feeding America network, and donations of food and funds from corporate America are at an all-time high. But more help is needed. We all need to continue our collective efforts to feed our neighbors — from grass-roots activities in small cities — all the way up to the board rooms of Wall Street.”

Country Stars Hit The Stage For Nashville Flood Victims

Nicole Kidman joined her husband Keith Urban at a concert on Sunday to help raise money for victims of Nashville’s recent devastating floods.

Keith performed on stage at the Ryman Auditorium with Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley and others while Nicole manned the phones with Kellie Pickler, Holly Williams and many more at the show, which raised over $1.7 million.

Co-hosted by James Denton and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, other performers at the show included Dierks Bentley, Sam Bush, Lady Antebellum, Keb’ Mo’, CeCe Winans, Martina McBride and Will Hoge. Kenny Chesney addressed the crowd via video.

Oprah's Chef Wants You To Love Your Veggies

Author and chef Art Smith is looking for a few good moms – those devoted to getting their kids and their communities to love eating vegetables. Chef Smith – celebrity chef for Oprah and a host of others – will host a Love Your Veggies retreat for winners of the “Search for Veggie Champions Contest.” The goal is to help moms everywhere raise veggie-loving kids.

The campaign is an initiative that has now awarded 51 elementary schools nationwide each with $10,000 grants to help provide students with greater access to fresh vegetables and fruits during school meals. Earlier this year Love Your Veggies published a book by actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley to support their cause.

The lovely actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley is rolling up her sleeves in the name of activism for healthy eating among children – Plopping children in front of TV for an episode of Popeye eating spinach to gain power is not the only clever way to get kids to love their veggies!

Paisley has not only taken this matter to heart but she has taken pen to paper, writing the book entitled Henry and the Hidden Veggie Garden. It is her first book, written in support of the Love Your Veggies Nationwide School Lunch Campaign, which has awarded 51 elementary schools each with a $10,000 nutrition grant.

The aim of the campaign is to increase the access to – and consumption of – fruits and vegetables in elementary schools across the country at a time when schools are required by federal mandate to strengthen nutrition and exercise programs as part of local wellness policies.
