Every year the most deserving people in Britain are honored at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards in London sponsored by Littlewoods.com.

Sir Elton John will once again host his annual White Tie and Tiara Ball at his home in the UK next week to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Thirty years ago this month, a mysterious new illness that seemed to attack the body’s immune system was first diagnosed in the United States. Buoyed by denial, stigma and lack of understanding, HIV spread across the world infecting 60 million people and taking the lives of 30million.

Stars Raise £48,000 At Oxfam Shop In London

Last month, LookToTheStars reported about a celebrity pop-up shop that aimed to raise charity cash for Oxfam at London’s Selfridges store. We can now reveal the shop raised over £48,000 in one week.

  A team of A-list stars, led by Annie Lennox and Whistles CEO Jane Shepherdson, helped to create, stock and staff The Oxfam Curiosity Shop – Britain’s biggest charity pop-up shop. Open from Friday 14 to Thursday 20 May in Selfridges’ Ultralounge, the pop-up shop sold celebrity-donated items from icons including Annie Lennox, Beyoncé Knowles, Elle Macpherson, Shirley Bassey, Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney plus thousands of handpicked items from Oxfam shops and boutiques across the country.

  Selling clothing, music, books, art and homewares, the Selfridges-based shop made more profit in one week than the £42,000 profit that the average Oxfam shop makes in a year – with over 10,000 people flooding through the doors. If it had traded for a year The Oxfam Curiosity Shop could have made an incredible £2.5 million, the equivalent of 60 Oxfam shops’ profits.

Online Auction Celebrates Celebrity Oxfam Charity Shop

The Celebrity Oxfam Curiosity Shop opens today, May 14, in London – and a special online auction has been launched to celebrate.

From Friday 14 May to Thursday 20 May Selfridges’ Ultralounge, the London store’s permanent arts and exhibition space, will be transformed into The Oxfam Curiosity Shop – staffed by celebrities from Annie Lennox to Beverley Knight with all proceeds going to Oxfam.

Shoppers will be able to browse fantastic one-offs; from a special collection of Livia Firth’s red carpet dresses, to items from icons including Alexa Chung, Annie Lennox, Helen Mirren, Natalie Imbruglia and Corinne Bailey Rae and designer donations from Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Roger Vivier and more. 

Annie Lennox Introduces Celebrity Charity Shop

Annie Lennox has recorded a video introducing a temporary celebrity charity shop opening in London this week.

A selection of A-list stars – including Carey Mulligan, Elle Macpherson, director Richard Curtis and Colin Firth’s wife Livia – have joined Oxfam and Selfridges to create, set-up, stock and staff Britain’s biggest charity pop-up shop. The shop will be in the Selfridges’ Ultralounge (lower ground floor) for one week only from Friday 14th to Thursday 20th.

Funds raised by the shop will be supporting Oxfam’s women’s projects across the world including Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of Congo, West Africa and South Africa. These projects protect, support and empower vulnerable women: campaigning against violence, empowering them to fight HIV and AIDS and offering the poorest girls the chance of education.

Annie Lennox To Open Celebrity Charity Curiosity Shop

Eurythmics star Annie Lennox has teamed up with Oxfam to launch a celebrity charity store in London’s Selfridges department store.

The temporary shop will be stocked with clothing and memorabilia donated by celebrities and staffed by celebrity store assistants, with proceeds going to help fund Oxfam’s women’s projects around the world in countries such as Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

Jane Shepherdson of Whistles, who are helping launch the project, says, “More than two thirds of the world’s poorest people are women, yet they struggle to be heard. We saw an opportunity to bring together influential women with valuable skills and contacts to try and make a difference to their lives.”

Elle Macpherson Asks Women to Get Checked

Hoping to decrease cervical cancer rates, supermodel Elle Macpherson is backing a charity campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

Macpherson is working with Wellbeing of Women, which funds screenings and vaccinations for females in the United Kingdom.

Urging women to regularly visit their doctors for health check, she said, “Many women don’t take time out to be checked routinely, sometimes choosing to ignore it or worry about being checked. It’s easy to think ‘It won’t happen to me,’ or ‘I don’t want to know what’s going on.’ The fact is, I always feel better after going to see the doctor for my regular checks. I know that I’m okay and that I’ve been responsible and faced my fears. Please get checked, ladies.”

Elton John To Hold Annual Oscar Viewing Party For Charity

Elton John has announced that he will once again host an Oscar Viewing Party to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The party is held every year to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization established and overseen by the singer that funds educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS, and for programs that provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS.

“We give them the best that they can possibly afford,” said Sir Elton. “It’s beautiful inside the tent, the food’s great, everyone will be served the best wines, but they need to be because they’ve paid an awful lot of money for a seat.”

Stars Want Bluefin Tuna Off The Menu

A group of actors has written to Robert De Niro’s Nobu restaurant chain to ask them to stop serving endangered Bluefin Tuna.

According the Britain’s The Telegraph, Sienna Miller, Charlize Theron, Jemima Khan, Woody Harrelson, Laura Bailey, Alicia Silverstone, Zac Goldsmith, Sting, Trudie Styler, Elle Macpherson and Stephen Fry have “written to the restaurant to say they can no longer dine with a clear conscience as long as the restaurant continues to serve bluefin tuna – a species considered by many to be as endangered as the white rhinoceros, panda or tiger.”

The plight of the bluefin tuna has been highlighted by the release of The End of the Line, a film narrated by Ted Danson that shows the effects of overfishing on the world’s oceans.

Once a year Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish throw open the doors of their exquisite Berkshire home to a sparkling array of celebrities for their annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, and last night was no different as a staggering number of stars filed into the singer’s house for this year’s much-looked-forward-to event.

More than 600 guests turned up to the beach-themed party, each paying around US$6,000 for the dinner, auction, and concert. This year’s performance came from Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and attendees included Bill Clinton, Elle Macpherson, Denzel Washington, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Caine, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart, Mischa Barton, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Gordon Ramsay, Tracey Emin, Roger Federer, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Osbourne, and Jemima Khan.

Sir Elton decorated his lavish garden with palm trees and sand for the party, which raised money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Last year’s event raised over $12 million for the cause, and the White Tie and Tiara Balls have made over $50 million since 1998.

It's A Long Way Down For Charity

What was quite possibly the party of the year was held in London on November 8, in celebration of the adventure of a lifetime.

The Long Way Down charity dinner and auction was held to mark the successful completion of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s 15,000 mile motorcycle ride from the most northern point in Scotland to the most southern point of South Africa, an adventure that is now the subject of a television series being shown on BBC2 on Sunday nights, and an action-packed book. A host of celebrities, including Elle Macpherson, James Nesbitt, and Scottish singer Sharleen Spiteri dusted off their best clothes for the event, which included performances by The Magic Numbers and Beth Orton.

The evening raised over $621,000 for the Long Way Down team’s charity partners, including Riders For Health, an organization that has worked for over 15 years to develop delivery systems for healthcare in Africa, as well as CHAS, a Scottish charity committed to providing children’s hospice services, and UNICEF.

A charity party organised by Sir Elton John has raised $12.2 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and was a night to remember for all those involved.

Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, and Elle Macpherson were among the 500 guests who dusted off their best clothes for the 9th annual White Tie and Tiara charity ball and auction, held on June 28 at Sir Elton’s home in Berkshire.

The theme of the night was “Las Vegas”, and the evening sparkled and shone as the celebrity party-goers wore their most stylish dresses and suits for the $6000/ticket event. Sir Elton’s house, “Woodside”, was lavishly decorated with a pink stretch cadillac, giant props from his “Red Piano” shows at Caesar’s Palace, and seven Elvis impersonators serenaded the crowd as they enjoyed a feast of “Las Vegas proportions”: truffle soufflé, followed by filet mignon with Maine lobster tail, and a giant knickerbocker glory for desert.

Elton John Crowned Karaoke King

Sir Elton John has given hope to aspiring singers everywhere by being crowned Karaoke King in a recent charity auction.

The event, held at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London on June 21, raised funds for the Hoping Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists children in Palestinian refugee camps. Bidders at the auction were able to “buy” their favourite singer to perform a song of their choice, or in some cases to perform a duet with them.

Sir Elton gave his rendition of the Elvis Presley tune “Are You Lonesome Tonight” in front of an audience that included Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson. His talents were bought by Elizabeth Hurley for $200,000 as a birthday gift to herself.

Gorbachev Cancer Fundraiser Draws Stars

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev hosted a gala dinner last weekend to raise money for the cancer charity he established in memory of his wife.

Raisa Gorbachev died of leukemia in 1999, and the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation aims to create a specialist hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia, that will provide high-quality medical care to children with cancer.

The gala event at Hampton Court Palace was attended by Bob Geldof, former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, actors Ralph Fiennes, Kim Cattrall and Anna Friel, singer Rod Stewart, authors Tom Wolfe and JK Rowling and supermodel Elle Macpherson.

UK Comic Relief Raises £40.2m

An eight-hour TV comedy marathon featuring cameos by Tony Blair and Kate Moss has brought this year’s Comic Relief appeal to a close, and the total funds raised to over £40m (78m USD).

Mr Blair played himself in a sketch set at Number 10 opposite comic Catherine Tate’s schoolgirl character Lauren, resorting to her catchphrase “Am I bovvered?”

The “Red Nose Day” TV gala featured other big names not normally known as comedians, including Daniel Craig, Elle Macpherson and Sting, while established comedy stars such as Ricky Gervais and Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen provided laughs aplenty.

Charging For Charity

Bono and Elle Macpherson are the faces behind the (RED) American Express Card, which Bono was proud to launch yesterday.

The card donates one percent of all funds charged on it to fighting the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

The U2 frontman feels that getting everyone working together, including big companies, will go a long way towards curing the disease and improving the world.
