Stars To Take Heart For India At Roof Gardens

This year’s Take Heart Ball will be taking place at Kensington’s Roof Gardens in London tonight, 1 October. The jungle fever themed fundraiser will again attract over 600 young socialites, including royalty, celebrities and budding entrepreneurs.

Guests at last year’s event included Princess Beatrice, Peaches Geldof and Sam Branson, son of Sir Richard Branson, who is also a key member of the Take Heart Charity Committee. This year the Roof Gardens will be transformed into an urban jungle: affluent Tarzans and glamorous Janes partying into the wee hours, the flash of wild animal print passing through the dark jungle foliage, off to claim their prey at the nearest bar.

Charity Director and event organizer, Lucian Tarnowski, describes Take Heart as “a youth-focused, young charity that has a loyal supporters group of future business leaders.” Take Heart, a purely voluntary charity, directs 100% of its proceeds into providing valuable I.T. training to blind students in rural India, enabling them to get jobs and support themselves, without having to beg. Money made from previous balls has helped build a school, which has now helped several thousand able-bodied students and hundreds of blind students gain a job for life with their new found IT skills. Again, all proceeds from this year’s Ball will go into the next stage of the school’s development.

The Take Heart Committee chaired by Lucian Tarnowski, also includes Simon Ambrose, winner of BBC 1’s The Apprentice, as well as Pete Ward and Jerome Touze, Founders of global social network Wayn.com. The Committee has organized an auction as the main money-making focus on the night with lots being donated by Richard Branson, Virgin Airlines, Swarovski, Breitling, L’Oréal and Aura Ibiza, to name a few.

Founded by Count Arthur Tarnowski in 1963, Take Heart is a visionary charity that has provided aid and rehabilitation to the physically handicapped people of rural India. Wheelchair-bound from his late twenties, Arthur Tarnowski visited India on a two year assessment of the plight of those people with disabilities. There he set up Take Heart with the legendary Baba Amte in partnership with Anandwan and the institution, Maharogi Sewa Samiti. Since then Take Heart has established a working future for thousands of people in rural India. Costing just £37 to provide a six month IT and English language training course per student, this can secure a job for life.

Take Heart holds dear to its principles of actually helping people to help themselves through education and skill training, rather than just giving them money. The Take Heart parent institution has the close support of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Fairy Wings Auctioned For Charity

A group of celebrities are weaving a little magic for charity this week by auctioning fairy wings on eBay. But before you get too upset about cruelty to fairies, we should point out that the wings have been designed by the stars and absolutely no fairies were harmed in the making of this auction.

The auction, which runs from September 8 to 18, features fairy wings designed by pop princess Leona Lewis and royal Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Organized by the Walt Disney Corporation, the auction will raise proceeds for the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“I loved the idea of the Disney Fairy Wing Auction and was really pleased to be able to help and contribute to such a great cause,” said Lewis. “Great Ormond Street Hospital obviously does such an important job and the Disney Fairy Wings are a really fun way to raise money for such an admirable charity. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on the 8th September that lots of people bid for my wings on the Disney Fairies eBay page – I’d love to see them raise something for Great Ormond Street Hospital.”

Disney has pledged to raise £10 million (US$20 million) to revamp Great Ormond Street. A new café, restaurant and a Disney Interactive Zone will be built with the funds.

Joining Lewis and the princesses in designing wings for the auction are British TV presenters Tess Daly and Vernon Kay, designers Nicole Farhi and Orla Kiely, sports stars James Cracknell, Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman, supermodel Agyness Deyn and the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.

Charity Choices Of The Royal Grandchildren

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Queen Elizabeth’s first granddaughters, are launching into some of the responsibilities that come with their HRH titles – one of those being charity.

It was recently announced that 19-year-old Beatrice will become the first Junior Ambassador for Children In Crisis. Founded in 1993 by her mother, Sarah, Duchess of York, the organization provides education to children of the poorest countries in the belief that it is the essential ingredient in lifting children out of poverty.

Beatrice said, “I always remember the old saying, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. That’s why I am so keen to help this campaign to educate children. We have the most amazing charity.”

She also is interested in Springboard For Children, whose volunteers help kids that have trouble with reading and writing at inner-city schools. Being dyslexic, Beatrice has a personal interest in the struggle.

Her younger sister, Eugenie – now 18 – is looking at Kids Company, which provides support to vulnerable and traumatized inner-city kids with emotional therapy and education, and which her uncle, Prince Charles, is also involved with.

Princes William and Harry, the Queen’s first grandsons, have already garnered quite some experience at fundraising for charities, near and distant. The latest was a charity polo match, held last month as part of William’s 26th birthday celebrations, to benefit The Countryside Foundation For Education – whose outdoor programs educate hundreds of thousands of UK school children each year through farm visits – and the African wildlife protection charity of which William is Royal Patron, Tusk Trust.

Prince Harry, possibly the most eager of the grandchildren, has gone so far as to co-found the Sentebale charity, which benefits underprivileged, disabled and AIDS-orphaned children of Lesotho. Harry not only heavily promotes the endeavor, he dedicates much of his own time and manpower to the charity’s projects.
