In 2006, Mercer launched the anti-malaria bed net campaign Spread the Net with Belinda Stronach and UNICEF to help protect children in Africa.

Mercer uses his Rick Mercer Report program to publicize the annual Student Challenge campaign, where high schools and universities accross Canada compete to raise the most funds to buy and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets throughout Africa via Spread the Net.
