On January 16th, MLK Day of Service 2012, millions will come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. Miley Cyrus and her friends at Youth Service America have 10 ways to Get Ur Good On for MLK Day, and throughout January. Get started!

Create a service-focused New Year’s resolution to honor Dr. King’s commitment to serving others. Volunteer at least once a month, sponsor a kid in a developing nation, host a coat drive, or tutor at an after school program. Write the resolution on a piece of paper and post it somewhere visible to see everyday.

Eliza Doolittle and Youssou N’Dour will headline this year’s Peace One Day concert at the 02 Arena in London on September 21.

Speakers will include Jude Law and Peace One Day founder and filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, with Monique Coleman also appearing.

The concert will mark the start of a 365-day countdown to a global truce that the organization hopes to inspire in 2012. For Peace Day 2012, Peace One Day is calling for and working towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence – a Global Truce –observed by all sectors of society globally, from governments to the individual. POD hopes this will be the largest reduction in global violence in recorded history, both domestically and internationally.

The United Nations appointed Disney actress and youth activist Monique Coleman as a “Youth Champion” for the International Year of Youth at a Headquarters press conference yesterday.

Coleman is best known for her character Taylor McKessie in the “High School Musical” movies and her recurring role as Mary-Margaret on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody”. Most recently, she launched an online talk show, “Gimme MO’”, to empower youth.

The American actress, a long-time advocate for improving the social and economic well-being of young people,says “I am extremely passionate about youth and look forward to highlighting the amazing ways they are already making a difference.”

“In a couple of weeks, I’ll be participating in a prom for children who are really sick,” she told JustJaredJr.com. “It’s called No Worries Now and it’s going to be at the Sony lot. I’m really excited about it. I think that everyone should have the opportunity to experience some of the staples of your youth. The GimmeMo Foundation is actually going to donate a few dresses to the cause as well.”

No Worries Now, formally known as the Shiri Foundation, is a nonprofit that believes every teen should have the opportunity to attend prom. They organize proms for teens with life threatening illnesses who may not have the chance to attend their own.

Chris Tucker will return as host of the 5th annual BrittiCares International Smile For Life 5K Run/Walk in LA this Saturday, May 29.

BrittiCares International is a non-profit organization, committed to making a difference in the lives of children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The inspiration of the organization came from a little girl named Brittiana Henderson who was first diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma (bone cancer) and later developed leukemia where she fought courageously, without complaining, while assisting other children with cancer to defeat the pernicious disease. Although Brittiana’s battle against Leukemia came to an end, the efforts of BCI have not diminished. BCI wishes to raise funds and public awareness to combat this disease.

Celebrities Give Their Soles To Foster Care Centre

The first “Foster Soles” online charity auction took place last month to support Hillsides, a Los Angeles foster care and treatment centre.

Foster Soles collected the shoes of dozens of big names, such as Denzel Washington, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicolas Cage, who autographed their footwear before putting them up on the block.

Proceeds of the auction will be used by Hillsides for their programs and in public awareness. Once an orphanage, it is now a private, non-profit centre providing abused children with a safe refuge and advocating for their rights. Hillsides’ website says, “Although [the children] come from all over Southern California and encompass every ethnic and socioeconomic group, they share a common experience – the emotional scars that result from child abuse. With counselling and mental health treatment, children at Hillsides learn that they are not alone, that they are safe and cared for. Six programs constitute the framework for Hillsides treatment services – Residential Treatment, the Education Center, the Family Center and Advocacy.”

Monique Coleman Packs Lunch For Hungry Kids

High School Musical’s Monique Coleman was in Los Angeles on Tuesday, handing out lunch packs for Feeding America.

The 27-year-old star kicked off the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s “Full Kids Full Potential” campaign by supplying exclusive “Fight Childhood Hunger” lunch bags –designed by the actress – to the first 500 children who packed shopping bags full of food products donated by the ConAgra Foods Foundation. The idea behind the event was to raise awareness of the increase in demand that foodbanks across the US are currently experiencing, and to reinforce the fact that children do better in school if they are fed well.

“Kids are getting ready to head back to school and it’s important to ensure that they have full stomachs with the balanced meals they need to reach their full potential,” said Coleman. “I hope our efforts today inspire kids across the country to organize their own food drives to help hungry kids.”
