Stars Support PETA Anti-Seal Hunting Campaign

PETA has recruited some big names for support of its latest anti-seal hunting campaign and has launched an ad campaign with their help.

Stars such as Jennie Garth, Rachael Leigh Cook, Kelly Osbourne, Jorja Fox, Tricia Helfer, Perez Hilton, Shane Mosley and many more are featured in the new ads.

“Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of seals,” states PETA on its website. “Baby seals, some merely weeks old, have their skulls smashed in or are shot for their fur. Many of these gentle animals may not even have eaten their first solid meals or taken their first swim before they are slaughtered.”

Take The Clothes From Celebrities' Backs For Awards Season

February is already upon us and that can mean only one thing: the start of the Hollywood Awards Season! And to celebrate, Clothes Off Our Back is giving you the chance to bid on red carpet clothing and Hollywood memorabilia to raise money for charity.

From now until March 10 you have the opportunity to bid on items such as sunglasses owned by Robert Downey Jr and Pushing Daisies’ Kristin Chenoweth, a shirt worn and autographed by David Duchovny, clothing and a book signed by Blair Underwood, a jacket worn and signed by Mark Harmon, the gown America Ferrera wore to the Directors Guild Awards, gowns belonging to Melora Hardin, Carrie Underwood and Tricia Helfer, Teri Hatcher’s handbag, a book autographed by Jodie Foster, and much much more.

Battlestar Galactica Auction Raises Funds For United Way

As Battlestar Galactica’s final 10 episodes begin airing this Friday, the Sci-Fi Channel will hold two auctions of memorabilia from the show to benefit charity, featuring items from cast members such as Tricia Helfer.

The first event will be a week-long eBay auction from 12 through 19 January with about 200 separate items to bid on (search Battlestar Galactica on eBay). The second will be a two-day live auction, 17 and 18 January, at California’s Pasadena Convention Center where bidders can either show up (free entrance), bid in real time via the webcast or place a proxy bid online.

While eBay is auctioning off the less costly memorabilia, the live auction will offer items such as Galactica character’s costumes, set furniture and props, art, costume sketches, weaponry and jewellery, all available for preview on 16 January. There will also be creative department head panel interviews that day.

United Way will benefit from the auctions’ proceeds. While many United Way regions in North American have reached or almost reached their fundraising goals for the year, the economic downturn has presented a significant and unexpected challenge.

A concerned UW spokesperson stated last week: “While many will struggle to make ends meet during this belt-tightening period, our most vulnerable citizens will continue to need the support of [United Way] affiliated organizations.”

Jenna Fischer Hosts Fur Ball

Kitten Rescue, Los Angeles’s largest no-kill animal rescue group, held its first annual Fur Ball celebration on Sunday at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Hosted by longtime Kitten Rescue supporter and former volunteer Jenna Fischer (NBC’s “The Office”), the Fur Ball featured cocktails and dinner, live entertainment, a film presentation about Kitten Rescue, a silent auction, and awards for special members of the Kitten Rescue community, including actress Tricia Helfer (“Battlestar Galactica”, “Burn Notice”).

Fischer is a self-confessed cat lover – although not quite as fanatic as her co-star on The Office: “In the show, Angela has all these elaborate procedures for her cat. I’ve done all that – the eye drops and ear swabs. I’ve checked their poop and massaged their tummy.”

The 34-year-old also ran her own kitten crisis line for a year: “That was like being a social worker for cats. You feel totally responsible when someone calls about an abandoned kitten.”

Other stars showing their support were Emily Deschanel (“Bones”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Reno 911”), Daniela Sea (“The L Word”) and Kent King (“General Hospital”). Funds raised at the Fur Ball will go to support Kitten Rescue’s programs and the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary.

Kitten Rescue, Los Angeles’s largest no-kill animal rescue group, is holding its first annual “Fur Ball” celebration on September 14, 2008 at the Skirball Cultural Center.

The “Fur Ball” marks 10 years of service and dedication to easing the plight of animal overpopulation in Los Angeles County.

“We have come a long way in ten years,” explains Ben Lehrer, President of Kitten Rescue. “We started out as a couple of people intercepting baby kittens as they were being brought into a city shelter and have grown to where we can rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for 1,000 cats and kittens every year.”

“These are difficult times for animal rescue,” says Lehrer. “We are seeing an increase in the numbers of cats and kittens being turned into kill shelters, left behind in abandoned apartments and foreclosed homes, or simply dumped on the street. It seems that when times get tough, people’s pets get the boot, and our services are needed more than ever.”

Funds raised at the “Fur Ball” will go to support Kitten Rescue’s programs and the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary.
