PETA Honors Famous Vegetarians On Postage Stamps

A number of famous vegetarians are featuring on a limited edition sheet of US postage stamps launched by PETA.

According to PETA.org: “The VIPs featured on these unique postage sheets ditched meat from their diets either out of concern for their health, for the environment, or for animals—and our world would not be the same without their accomplishments. Although the individuals featured in this series seem very different at first glance, they are united in their respect for animals.”

Chrissie Hynde Says No To Circus Cruelty

Ohio native Chrissie Hynde has fired off a letter on PETA’s behalf to Toledo Mayor Michael P. Bell, asking him to ensure that Ohio’s anti-cruelty code—which prohibits the use of any prods on animals in circuses—is enforced when Ringling Bros. circus will be in his jurisdiction during the circus’ stint at the Huntington Center from October 27 to October 30.

As the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer explains, Ringling routinely uses sharp metal bullhooks to poke, prod, and beat the elephants used in its shows into performing—even when the animals are ill and ailing. This is in direct violation of Ohio law.

“For decades, I’ve toured the world with The Pretenders, singing the praises of Ohio, and I’ve always returned to my home state a few times a year to remain an engaged citizen,” she wrote. "One thing that heartens me is the enormous interest in protecting animals in Ohio. That’s why I’m writing in advance of Ringling Bros.’ October 25th to 30th stint at Toledo’s Huntington Center to ask that you ensure that Ohio’s absolute ban on the use of prods to control animals used in circuses be enforced to prohibit Ringling’s use of bullhooks. The use of these sharp weapons on elephants, whose skin is so sensitive that they can feel flies biting them and then swat them away with their tails, is not only cruel but also unnecessary, as evidenced by the fact that more than half of accredited zoos in the United States do not use them.

Farm Sanctuary Celebrates 25 Years Of Animal Protection

This year, Farm Sanctuary, the organization responsible for bringing farm animal issues into the mainstream consciousness celebrates its 25th anniversary.

As the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, Farm Sanctuary urged passage of the first U.S. laws to protect animals on farms, initiated the first cruelty convictions at stockyards and slaughterhouses, and established the first and largest rescue and refuge network for farm animals in North America. Along the way, the organization has encouraged the public to embrace compassionate living through public campaigns, like getting the first veggie burger on Burger King menus and welcoming visitors to its sanctuaries, where thousands of people have had transformational experiences — including Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who became a vegan after a visit to the New York Shelter.

Sir Paul McCartney has declared his support for BUAV’s No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end animal testing for toiletries and cosmetic products sold in the EU.

“Animals should not suffer in the name of beauty. Testing toiletries and cosmetics on animals is cruel and unnecessary,” said Sir Paul. “Join me in signing the BUAV’s petition to ensure the sale of cruel products in the EU is outlawed by 2013.
Stars Say No To Testing Botox On Animals

Celebrity beauties Joss Stone, Joanna Lumley and Lucy Davis have joined the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) to end cruel botox tests on animals.

The stars were shocked to learn that every batch of botox that hits the high street is tested on animals. Botox is used by huge numbers of people worldwide for cosmetic purposes.

“We can stop this cruel and unnecessary act by bringing light to what has clearly been done in darkness for too long,” said Joss Stone. “I think it is a sick way to test something that is for cosmetic use. They are not trying to cure cancer here; this is about smoothing the wrinkles on the faces of women and men. How many innocent animals have to suffer? Let’s put a stop to this cruel, inhumane, and above all unnecessary act.”

Chrissie Hynde To Play Charity Gig For Farm Animal Shelter

Chrissie Hynde will bring her new musical project to New York on May 29 to benefit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.

JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys is a new collaboration between the former Pretenders singer and Welsh singer/songwriter JP Jones. The duo will hold an acoustic concert on the lawns of the sanctuary in Willow, NY, to raise money for the care of over 200 formerly abused, abandoned and discarded farm animals.

Established in 2004, the sanctuary is “a place where visitors can come face to face with these animals who most only know as dinner and learn about the devastating effects of modern-day agribusiness on the animals, the environment and human health. Here you can frolic with goats in a large open pasture, sit down with a pig who wants nothing more than a belly rub, cuddle with chickens who seek out your attention or get nuzzled by some very friendly sheep!”

The Mines Advisory Group has gathered footwear from over 50 celebrities for the auction, which will raise vital funds for their projects and draw attention to the part of the body most vulnerable to landmines.

The auction was launched by model Kelly Knox, the glamorous winner of BBC 3’s best disabled model competition, at Merchant Taylor’s Hall in London.

Kristen Johnston Bares Her Soul - And More - For PETA

Former 3rd Rock From The Sun actress Kristen Johnston has appeared in a sexy new advert for PETA.

The 41-year-old actress has stripped off for the ad and appears in a Lady Godiva-type pose on horseback in a bid to stop New York’s horse-and-carriage industry. She joins a host of other stars who have already raised awareness of the plight of the horses used to tow carriages around Central Park, including Pink, Chrissie Hynde, and Alec Baldwin.

According to PETA: “Horses used in the horse-drawn carriage industry are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. These gentle, social animals are denied the opportunity to socialize with other horses, graze in fields, and run free.”

PETA Gives Away Chrissie Hynde's Guitar

Rocker Chrissie Hynde is well known for her animal activism, and PETA is giving you the chance to win a signed guitar from the singer.

The 57-year-old has been a high-profile animal rights activist for many years, leading demonstrations, organizing petitions, and opening her own vegetarian restaurant – The VegiTerranean in Ohio – in 2007. The star led a protest against KFC in France in 2004, where she and other activists smeared “blood” on the windows and were arrested, and has also called for a stop to the horse-drawn carriage industry in New York.

Hynde’s band, The Pretenders, has just released their new album – Break Up The Concrete – and to celebrate, PETA is giving away copies of the album, as well as a Fender Stratocaster guitar signed by the singer. Just visit the PETA website before November 1 to be part of the draw.
