Legends Sign Guitars For Charity Auction

A huge selection of guitars signed by rock legends both old and new will go under the hammer next weekend to aid in the fight against child cancer.

Stars Guitars is a family friendly gala that will feature a concert by REO Speedwagon, exciting live and silent auctions featuring guitars signed by popular musicians and a gourmet strolling dinner. Proceeds from this high-energy evening support the Charles A. Main, M.D. Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund of Beaumont Hospitals. In addition to college scholarships, health grants will also be awarded to Beaumont Hospitals’ Late Effects Clinic for Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

Among the guitars on offer are instruments signed by Carlos Santana, Ozzy Osbourne, The Doobie Brothers, Jason Mraz, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai, Yoko Ono, Paramore, Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, Les Paul, Bad Company, Melissa Etheridge, Motley Crue, Counting Crows, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Kid Rock, Bob Seger, Angels & Airwaves, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Rob Zombie, Staind, The Jonas Brothers, Gretchen Wilson, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney and many more.

Stars Guitars will take place on Oct. 24 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.

Proceeds support the hospital’s pediatric cancer programs in the Detroit suburbs of Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and Troy.

A new charity auction is giving you the chance to bid on once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and items to raise money for a state-of-the-art museum in New York City designed to highlight the achievements of songwriting greats and acknowledge their rightful place in culture.

Cyndie Lauper Launches Charity Auction

Cyndi Lauper has launched the True Colors Fund online auction which aims to raise money to strengthen the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and allied community by growing the number of volunteers and donors to the non-profit organizations working on their behalf.

Items up for grabs include lunch and Tarot card reading with Lauper, tickets to the Entourage season premiere in LA, a meet-and-greet with Bette Midler in Las Vegas, a set visit to 30 Rock, meet-and-greets with Lady Gaga and Rosie O’Donnell, autographed items from Dolly Parton, one-of-a-kind handwritten lyrics from Jason Mraz, Peter Gabriel, Michael Stipe and many more, and items from Mark Wahlberg, Yoko Ono and others.

“I am excited to launch the True Colors Fund’s Summer Online Auction,” said Cyndi Lauper, who created the True Colors Tour, an annual music tour that tour benefits the Human Rights Campaign and other organizations that provide support to the LGBT community and to the straight friends and family who love them, including PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and the Matthew Shepard Foundation, as well as local organizations in cities where the concerts were held. “There is literally something for everyone. All of the proceeds will go directly to support the True Color Fund’s work to get everyone – especially my fellow straight allies – to do what they can to help make equality a reality for the GLBT community.”

The True Colors Fund is currently developing an in-depth public awareness and education campaign to inspire, engage and challenge every GLBT and allied person to do what they can to personally effect change within and for the GLBT community by volunteering and supporting the organizations working on their behalf each and every day.

Planned to launch in late 2009, the campaign will include public service announcements (PSAs) that tell the personal stories of people who have been benefited from the work of GLBT organizations. The PSAs will also direct viewers to an extensive online volunteer village where they will find all the tools and information they will need to become and stay personally involved.

Also the True Colors Fund continues to work with the True Colors Tour to raise money and awareness for GLBT issues. Over the past 2 years, True Colors is proud to have raised over $200,000 for GLBT organizations like HRC, CenterLink & PFLAG.

Jason Mraz Gives Eco Tips For Toilet Users

Singer Jason Mraz has blogged some eco-tips with a difference on his MySpace page.

“Recent News from our friends at the [”Natural Resources Defense Council":http://www.looktothestars.org/charity/432-natural-resources-defense-council] say that Americans’ addiction to two-ply, super soft toilet paper is causing greater harm to our environment than our gas guzzling cars," he wrote. "In order to produce all that perfectly plush paper, companies must harvest tons of virgin trees, which the reaping of means less oxygen for the atmosphere to offset or all the carbon that seems to be frying us here on the surface.

“The US is the country that consumes the most forests specifically to fulfill [toilet needs]. If you travel abroad, you may find discomfort in the thin one-ply offered up pretty much everywhere else. But that’s because most other countries are more careful about their resourceful trees and/or use recycled and post-consumer paper in the manufacturing of toilet tissue.

“So I’m writing this today to invite you to buy only recycled or large percentage post consumer paper for your household, school or office. If you aren’t the one buying it, then encourage your janitorial staff to consider it. The paper isn’t nearly as soft, but it’s just as durable.”

Mraz goes on to explain some very useful Toilet Tissue Tips designed to help the environment.

Jason Mraz Shows His Gratitude By Supporting Charity

Jason Mraz is about to show his ‘gratitude’ on his upcoming tour by donating a portion of the proceeds to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

The Grammy-nominated singer kicks off the first leg his Gratitude Café Tour in July with such supporting acts G-Love & Special Sauce and Bushwalla.

In addition to donating a portion of proceeds from tickets sales to the charity, Mraz will also give ten fans the chance to meet him on tour.

Jason Mraz Supports 13 Indigenous Grandmothers To Save The Earth

Singer Jason Mraz has blogged about his support for a non-profit group of elderly people who want to use their collective knowledge to save the world.

“Recently I was turned onto the work of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers; an action team of women from the four corners of the globe who have formed an alliance to bring balance to Mother Earth and all her inhabitants for the next seven generations to come,” he wrote in his latest blog. “To do work intended for seven generations is a remarkably selfless act indeed. Imagine making something that you know is meant for someone 200 years from now. It’s like planting a tree. In your lifetime you may not be able to swing from it’s branches, but long after you’re gone, many families will.”

The alliance of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers was formed in 2004, when a group of concerned women from all over the world—the Arctic Circle, North, South and Central America, Africa, and Asia—arrived at Tibet House’s Menla Mountain Retreat in upstate New York. Within a few days of convening, the grandmothers agreed to form a global alliance to work together to serve both their common goals and their specific local concerns.

According to their mission statement, the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers “represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that educate and nurture our children.”

The long term aims of the group have captured Jason Mraz’s attention and support.

“Are you choosing to think it’s too late to save the planet because you’re not seeing immediate results?” he wrote. "Are you personally choosing not to change your diet and bad habits because you think it will make this week suck? Well, think of that distant you in the future who will look back and hug you for the powerful shift in consciousness you decided to make right now.

“There are many people around the world who are still connected to the Earth, who see that we DO rely on her gifts, that we live on her body, that we, ourselves sprouted from Nature. Modern society, city life, and TV technology fool us too often and we forget our roots. Protect the air and water, all that which gives us life and learn from what the plants are trying hard to teach us.”

Jewel And Friends Donate Song Lyrics To Charity Auction

Singer/songwriter Jewel has joined with a huge group of other musicians in donating handwritten lyrics to a new charity auction.

The 34-year-old has donated signed lyrics to some of her most well known songs – including Foolish Games, You Were Meant For Me, Hands, and Who Will Save Your Soul – to raise money for Project Clean Water, a charity she established in 1998 to improve the quality of life for millions of people by helping to provide clean water on a global scale.

The singer has been joined by some of her celebrity friends for the auction, with handwritten lyrics also being donated by the Pussycat Dolls, Trace Adkins, Katy Perry, Garth Brooks, Josh Groban, REO Speedwagon, David Foster, John Rich, Five For Fighting’s John Ondrasik, Carrie Underwood, Randy Travis, John Mellencamp, Jason Mraz, Gretchen Wilson and many more.

Project Clean Water is part of Jewel’s Higher Ground for Humanity organization, and has been involved in building wells and filtration systems in South America, Central America, India, Tanzania, and Bangladesh.

Nobel Peace Concert To Rock Oslo

Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson will co-host the 2008 Nobel Peace Concert honoring this year’s laureate, former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari.

The show – which will take place in Oslo, Norway, on December 11 – will feature performances by Diana Ross, Feist, Dierks Bentley, Jason Mraz, Julieta Venegas and Seun Kuti, and will be televised in over 100 countries.

The Nobel Concert is an annual event, and has in the past been hosted by Kevin Spacey, Uma Thurman, Sharon Stone, Salma Hayek and many others.

Former Finnish president Ahtisaari received this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his work in mediating conflicts around the world.

Jason Mraz To Rock The Debate

Hofstra University students in New York will “Rock the Debate” at a free concert as part of its Educate ’08 event series this Saturday, October 11, on the Intramural Fields located on the North Campus.

The Rock the Debate concert, presented by Hofstra Concerts, begins at 11:30 a.m and is open only to current Hofstra students with a valid Hofstra I.D. The event will include performances by three student groups: the Alpha Phi Alpha step team, SPIT, and 6th Element. Following the student performances special guest Lisa Hannigan will open for the day’s featured performer, Jason Mraz.

In 2002, Jason Mraz’s first studio album, Waiting For My Rocket To Come, was released and achieved platinum status. Since then Jason has released the live CD/DVD Tonight Not Again, Grammy award winning MR.A-Z and a digital only live album Selections For Friends in 2006. His current album release, We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things, debuted at #3 on the US Billboard chart and is soon expected to go gold. The first single “I’m Yours”, has received over 20 million plays on YouTube and has also achieved platinum success. His current tour coincides with the release of his new book, a thousand things, a collection of polaroids taken from his various trips around the world while touring.

A suggested donation for the concert is a non-perishable food item for Rock CAN Roll, a volunteer, non-profit, hunger relief organization and think tank. The organization collaborates with rock concerts, schools, corporations, and private individuals to collect canned and non-perishable food ( and basic provisions ) for distribution to local agencies and into the hands of children, seniors and families who live with hunger and in poverty.

In addition to the performances, there will be an “Express Yourself” tent at the fields where students will present displays and activities concerning various issues affecting the United States and the world today. Complimentary food and other student festivities will be on hand.

Educate ‘08 is Hofstra University’s unprecedented educational effort that engages students, faculty and the public in a year-long series of conferences, events and lectures about the 2008 election, politics and presidential history.
