Ryan Reynolds talks about his roles as executive producer and narrator on the new film The Whale in an exclusive interview with The Humane Society.

“The Whale” is the true and poignant story of Luna, a young orca separated from his pod, who turned up alone in a narrow stretch of sea off the coast of British Columbia in 2001 and refused to leave. The film invites us to reexamine our preconceived ideas about these amazing marine mammals and consider the many complex effects of our interaction with wildlife.

Narrated by Ryan Reynolds, and executive produced by Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, “The Whale” is co-directed by Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm.

Ryan Reynolds Visits Homeless Youth Shelter In Canada

Ryan Reynolds made a surprise visit to a homeless youth centre in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada, last week.

The celebrity visited the charity shelter of Covenant House, part of the largest privately-funded agency in the Americas providing shelter and other services to homeless, runaway and throwaway youth. Incorporated in New York City in 1972, Covenant House has facilities in 21 cities throughout the United States, Canada, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. Covenant House also operates 24-hour crisis hotlines in the United States (Covenant House NINELINE) and Mexico (Acercatel).

Actor Ryan Reynolds, who sits on the Board of Directors of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, is challenging his fans and the general public to get involved in helping to speed a cure for Parkinson’s by “liking” the Foundation’s Facebook page.

If the Foundation reaches 100,000 Facebook fans as part of its national Parkinson’s Awareness Month campaign, Reynolds will add $10,000 to his cumulative giving to the Foundation.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research held its 10th annual gala benefit — "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s — in New York City on Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Co-chaired by Tracy Pollan & Michael J. Fox, Alexandra Wentworth & George Stephanopoulos, Jennifer & Marc Lipschultz and Julie & Doug Ostrover, and with Honorary Chairs Lonnie & Muhammad Ali, the event brought together approximately 900 guests including Mayor of Newark Cory Booker, “Friday Night Lights” actress (and “Spin City” alum) Connie Britton, “Top Chef” judge Tom Colicchio, former NBA star Brian Grant, and NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn to raise over $4.7 million for Parkinson’s research.

“The Michael J. Fox Foundation has one goal — accelerating the development of new treatments, and ultimately a cure for PD,” Foundation CEO Katie Hood said in remarks from the podium. “Our approach to research funding is not a traditional one. We are proactive, emphasizing calculated risk, insisting on accountability from our partners and prioritizing the work that other funders can’t or won’t. We could do none of this without you and are so grateful for your support.”

The stars are asking fans of Team Fox to post their favorite Team Fox event photos on their official Facebook page. Team Fox is made up of incredible individuals all over the world raising funds and awareness for The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Michael J. Fox proved that he can still rock like Marty McFly during the weekend when he appeared on stage at his annual A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s gala at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Saturday.

The gala benefited his Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research, and the evening saw Fox join rockers such as Roger Daltrey, Steven Tyler and Elvis Costello on stage for a jam. The event was emceed by Denis Leary, and guests such as Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Scorsese and Ben Stiller were spotted enjoying the evening.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991. The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease within the decade through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s today.

Stars Support Indie Filmmaking And Social Causes At Los Angeles Film Festival

There was no shortage of stars out to support independent film at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival in Westwood Village.

Having the festival in the area despite these trying economic times helps restaurants and other businesses reap the benefits. The film festival began on June 18 with the world premiere of The Paper Man starring Jeff Daniels and Ryan Reynolds and ended June 28th. The world premieres of Transformers and Public Enemies also took place at the festival. Fans lined the streets to see Megan Fox, Michael Bay, Christian Bale and Johnny Depp.

The star of Smokin’ Aces and Chaos Theory finished the race in a respectable 3 hours and 50 minutes, running for Team Fox, a community started by the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support Parkinson’s research.

Reynolds has a personal connection to Michael J. Fox’s project — his father Jim Reynolds has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 15 years. “Witnessing my Dad suffer over the years galvanized my need to step up,” he wrote on his TeamFox page.

Ryan Reynolds To Run For Parkinson's

After watching runners approach the finish line of the New York Marathon a few years ago, Ryan Reynolds was deeply moved by their self inflicted physical states of not-well-being. So much so that he decided, “I’d never do that ever, ever.”

He says, “I saw an incredible spectacle of people pushed to the very brink of collapse… I saw guys coming in to finish with bleeding nipples… People were crying. People were limping, hobbling, screaming, crawling.”

On November 2nd, however, Reynolds will take to the New York streets for this year’s marathon as a member of Team Fox in support of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. When Reynolds – whose father has been suffering from Parkinson’s for 15 years – met Michael J. Fox last year, he was inspired into doing something for both the cause and for his father.
