Chimes Of Freedom: Stars Cover Bob Dylan For Charity

Two iconic forces that have impacted the past 50 years – the life-saving human rights activism of Nobel Peace Prize-winning Amnesty International and the incomparable artistry of Bob Dylan – are being saluted by 80 musicians who contributed new or previously unreleased recordings to Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International.

The collection is scheduled for physical (4 discs) and digital release in North America on January 24, 2012 through Fontana Distribution. It will be distributed internationally through Fontana International, a Universal Music company, on January 30.

Chimes of Freedom features a stellar and diverse group of artists across the generational and musical spectrum. The performers, including many of Amnesty International’s longtime supporters, range in age from teenage pop star Miley Cyrus, 19, to folk music legend Pete Seeger, who, at 92, records Dylan’s poignant “Forever Young,” with a children’s chorus.

Bob Marley's Family Donates $100,000 To Charity

Marley Family matriarch and reggae icon Rita Marley, and her son, Grammy Award winning musician, Ziggy Marley and Rohan Marley have been joined by other members of their family to announce a $100,000 donation to charity:water from 1Love.org, a not-for-profit business created with the Marley Family to create awareness and a sustainable flow of contributions to benefit charitable organizations that empower youth, protect the planet and encourage global peace. charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Rita, Ziggy, Rohan and the Marley Family presented the $100,000 check from 1Love.org to Scott Harrison, founder and CEO of charity:water. The funds were raised, in part, from a special 1Love.org Marley Mission launched earlier this year to support charity:water.

Poker legend Annie Duke and Life Rolls On founder, Jesse Billauer, are set to host the 1st Annual “A Night of Poker” on May 7 in Gardena California to benefit Billauer’s Life Rolls On Foundation.

Life Rolls On, a subsidiary of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, was founded in 1996 by Jesse Billauer. On the verge of becoming a professional surfer, Billauer suffered a spinal cord injury while surfing and was rendered a quadriplegic, Jesse’s spirit was not broken, and the phrase “Life Rolls On” was born.

Today, LRO remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury and utilizes action sports as a platform to inspire infinite possibilities despite paralysis.

Willie Nelson And Woody Harrelson To Hold Charity Poker Tournament

Willie Nelson and Woody Harrelson will host a very special charity poker tournament later this month.

The pair will hold the "Willie and Woody All-Star Texas Hold ’Em Charity Tournament on September 27 at the Hustler Casino in LA to benefit the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance, which aims to increase awareness of community-based biodiesel initiatives.

The no-limit tournament will also feature a silent auction that includes items such as a lithograph signed by Jack Johnson, a guitar donated by Ziggy Marley, and a SBA Bandanna signed by Willie Nelson.

Ziggy Marley's Charity Holds Health Fair In Jamaica

Ziggy Marley’s charitable organization, URGE (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), recently held its biannual health fair at the Cedella Booker Basic School in Nine Mile, Saint Ann, Jamaica – the birthplace of Ziggy’s father, Bob Marley.

Present at the health fair was a team of 21 physicians, nurses and support staff led by Dr. Bruno Levin of Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. Along with volunteers and representatives from Tuff Gong International (the Marley family recording label), the health team administered free medical care to those attending the health fair, including the dispensation of over the counter medications.

Also present at the health fair were representatives of the St. Ann’s Health Department, offering immunizations, nutrition information as well as mental health and physical therapy options.

Jack Johnson To Host Annual Charity Music Festival

Jack Johnson will once again host the annual Kokua Festival Earth Day weekend in Hawaii in April to benefit charity.

The festival will take place April 23 and 24 at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, with a lineup of acts that includes Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal, Jake Shimabukuro and Anuhea. All proceeds from the weekend will go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, an organization that supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii.

Established by Jack and his wife, Kim, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation’s mission is to provide students with experiences that will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of their environment so they will be lifelong stewards of the earth. Singer Katy Perry has joined with Cyndi Lauper, Yoko Ono and hip hop group N.E.R.D. to design T-shirts as part of H&M’s second Fashion Against AIDS collection.

H&M, a chain of 1,500 stores spread across 28 countries, has joined together with Designers Against AIDS to launch Fashion Against AIDS, a clothing collection for men and women, designed to draw attention to HIV/AIDS and increase awareness of the disease. Last year’s campaign featured Timbaland, Good Charlotte, Rihanna, and Ziggy Marley who created a special selection of T-shirts, tank tops, and hooded sweatshirts that use color and style to highlight the cause.

For the 2009 Fashion Against AIDS collection, the message is loud and clear with bold language and vibrant colors. Roisin Murphy’s t-shirt is bold with the phrase “Protection is power” on the front and back of a men’s t-shirt and a women’s bodysuit. N.E.R.D uses a clever graphic to shout “use your brain” on vibrant tank tops and t-shirts for both men and women. Estelle designed a tank top with the slogan “LIFE IS TOO SHORT – HAVE SEX BE SAFE” next to a sassy silhouette of an empowered woman. Katy Perry’s clever safe sex message, “WHAT’S ON THE OUTSIDE IS WHAT COUNTS,” appears on both a bodysuit and a cap-sleeved shirt. Ziggy Marley – the son of the late Bob Marley – celebrated his 40th birthday last week by auctioning off the chance to join him in the studio for a day to one lucky fan.

The auction was held to benefit Tony Bennett’s Exploring The Arts organization, which promotes the arts in American schools.

The lucky winner will get to join Marley in the studio as he lays down tracks for his latest album later this year.

A major worldwide fashion store and a charity set up by artists and fashion designers have initiated a campaign to help raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS projects.

“Supporting the Fashion Against AIDS campaign was a great way to encourage my fans to join me in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” said singer Rihanna, who is also taking part in the initiative. “I love that H&M is providing a fashionable and easy way for young people all over the world to get involved in this worthy cause.”

'Rock For Darfur' Myspace campaign

MySpace.com has led a campaign entitled Rock For Darfur — a series of concerts across North America in which the participating big-name bands donate portions of their ticket sales to Oxfam’s relief efforts in Sudan and neighboring Chad. October 21st saw more than 20 concerts unite rock, pop, reggae and country artists for a common cause.

The concerts featured the likes of Ziggy Marley, Alice In Chains, Insane Clown Posse, Jamie Cullum, +44 and Atreyu. “I’ve been watching the news reports and it brings tears to my eyes and anger to my heart when I see what is happening in Darfur right now,” says Ziggy Marley. “How can we sit by and not find a way to help? Together every little bit will add up.”

Many music artists have MySpace profiles, and site members can add bands to their friend lists. Using this feature, ‘Rock For Darfur’ awareness could be maximized throughout the website, using blogs and bulletins. MySpace partnered with bands and the leading international relief and development organization Oxfam to make the campaign the company’s largest philanthropic effort to date
