Anderson Cooper To Host Elton John's Enduring Vision For Charity

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) will present its 10th annual An Enduring Vision benefit event at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City next week.

The October 26 event will see Anderson Cooper return as host, and there will be a performance by Smokey Robinson.

K’naan Returns Home To Help Fellow Somalians

Rap artist K’naan left his home in Canada last week to return to Somalia, the country his family left in the early ’90s during civil war and famine. Today, due to what the UN is calling the worst drought in a generation, the country is suffering yet another famine.

“It’s very difficult for any Somali to be feeling this immense situation and to not be able to do much from afar,” K’naan said in an interview with CNN in the lead up to his first visit back to Mogadishu. Musician and activist Bono joined K’naan in the interview with journalist Anderson Cooper.

“You can blame droughts on God,” said Bono “but famines are manmade. We know exactly what to do and this shouldn’t be happening. The Somalis are a very sophisticated people. For twenty years now they’ve had no real government. I don’t know how they’ve survived. But the famine is really the wake up call for all of us. If we make a safe passage for aid, I do believe the aid will be through. We [at ONE Campaign] hold those politicians that make promises accountable.”

Michael McKean Wins $1 Million For Charity In Jeopardy Final

Actor Michael McKean (“Laverne and Shirley” and star of Broadway’s “Superior Donuts”) prevailed as champion of the Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational Tournament during the weekend — winning $1 million for his charity the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF). This is the biggest amount ever awarded to charity in “Jeopardy!” history. It is also the largest single donation ever received by the IMF.

Myeloma is the second most common blood cancer after lymphomas, affecting an estimated 750,000 people worldwide. McKean became passionate for the cause when his friend, musician Lee Grayson, passed away from myeloma eight years ago. Regarding today’s victory, McKean said, “If some breakthroughs can be made or more research can be done due to this win, it would be incredible. There are so many amazing people at IMF who do great work.”

According to Susie Novis, president and co-founder of the IMF, McKean’s donation will be used for a special fund in honor of McKean and Grayson. “The money will fund research to find a cure and to help patients and their families through education,” Novis said. “His win has shown us how empowering being informed can be — it can change the lives of people all over the world!”

Demi Moore Finds Inspiration In Haiti

Demi Moore just returned from a visit to earthquake ravaged Haiti, and seems to have found inspiration in the rubble.

Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s new charity, the DNA Foundation, is focused on the sex slave trade, and tends to use public awareness in its efforts to eventually bring the trade to an end. DNA is not about cleaning up after natural disasters. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper last week, Moore explained why she went to Haiti and what she found there.

“[Ashton and I] became aware of the Restavek system, which is about 300,000 children who are enslaved to do all the work, who sleep on the floor and in most cases it’s the young girls who are sexually exploited.”

Last year, Ashton Kutcher and CNN raced to be the first to get to one million followers on Twitter. Kutcher said that if he got to one million first, he would pay for 10,000 malaria nets for Malaria No More.

He did win, and he’s keeping his promise.

On World Malaria Day 2009, the most retweeted message on Twitter was: “Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = www.MalariaNoMore.org.” Thanks to this, almost 90,000 nets will be distributed in the Senegalese towns of Seraya and Velingara.

Anderson Cooper Witnesses Horror In Haiti

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper – currently in Haiti – saw the raw face of horror this week when he witnessed an attack on a small boy by a group of looters.

While filming with his handheld camera, Cooper ran to the aid of the boy, who suffered head injuries at the hands of the men.

“We were covering another story when we heard shots being fired,” wrote Cooper on his blog. "We ran toward the sound and found a store being looted. Two Haitian police officers were occasionally firing into the air to try to keep order, but that only worked for a few moments, then the looting would begin again.

George Clooney Announces Haiti Telethon Stars

George Clooney has revealed some of the big names he has recruited for this Friday’s Telethon for Haiti.

The show will be broadcast around the world on January 22, and will be hosted by Clooney in LA, Wyclef Jean in New York, and CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Haiti. Donations will go to Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef’s Yéle Haiti Foundation.

Celebrities’ Quick Response To Haiti Disaster

Here’s what some celebrities are up to, in response to the earthquake disaster that has destroyed Port-au-Prince and devastated Haiti:

Don Cheadle, George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt: “The people of Haiti are in desperate need of help. Our organization, Not On Our Watch, will do whatever it can and we know the international community will as well.” Not On Our Watch has donated $1 million in emergency response funds to provide medical services to victims of the disaster.

Wyclef Jean: “Yéle Haiti Foundation has pulled together a group of like minded organizations and first responders in order to help coordinate the delivery of emergency services and materials needed by victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Each of the organizations will undertake their own fundraising and on-the-ground operations, but have agreed to share resources, collaborate when it makes sense and avoid duplication.” Four airlifts of medical and emergency supplies and food have already gone out. ONEXONE, one of the like minded organizations, has also already shipped medical supplies, water and blankets for on-the-ground support.
