Molly Sims To Host Charity Fundraiser

Molly Sims is to host the 2009 Friends of El Faro Fundraiser.

Friends of El Faro helps to improve the lives of the children of Casa Hogar Sion by providing food, shelter, education and a safe environment, with a long term goal to purchase land and build them a new home.

Since November of 2000, Adam Smith and his wife Leigh Kilton-Smith have been traveling with a circle of friends to Tijuana, Mexico every four to five weeks to spend the weekend with the more then 100 children of “Casa Hogar Sion” orphanage. It is here, where children, who have been abandoned or abused or neglected, have found a home, a place where they are safe and cared for, nourished and loved. The Friends of El Faro do what they can take care of the children, and Mama Carmen and Papa Jorge and the staff, remarkable people who have created a home for children who did not have one. Everything from cooking meals, to drying tears, wiping noses, lots of hugs, playing games, talking, listening, breaking up fights and mediating peace; building playgrounds, changing diapers, showing outdoor movies, popping popcorn, and most importantly, letting the children know that they are loved and cherished and important.

Over the years, more then two hundred friends have joined them on their weekend trips and when the orphanage lost their major funding several years ago, Friends of El Faro rallied to put on an annual fundraiser to raise money to take care of our children. The fundraiser has had the support of stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Andy Garcia, Ben Stiller, Josh Duhamel and Sheryl Crow.

Josh Duhamel Films PSA For Storm Relief

Transformers star Josh Duhamel has filmed a public service announcement in a bid to help fellow North Dakota natives who have been hit by the state’s recent storms.

“Many people in my home state of North Dakota have been impacted by floods and severe weather,” he said. “Help people affected by disasters like the current floods and winter storms by donating to the American [”Red Cross":http://www.looktothestars.org/charity/75-red-cross] Disaster Relief Fund. Your donation enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disasters. The American Red Cross relies on your support to meet the needs of disaster victims."

The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund has already provided the victims with 181,993 meals and 500 “comfort kits”, but desperately need more help.

“To make a contribution, contact the American Red Cross today,” said Duhamel. “Your help is urgently needed.”

Michael Jordan's Charity Golf Tournament A Success

The eighth annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) – held at the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Bahamas – was once again a huge success. Jordan was joined by numerous friends who helped his four-day event raise over $150,00 for several worthy causes including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the James R. Jordan Foundation and the Butch Kerzner Summit Foundation.

Since the MJCI began in 2000, nearly $5 million has been raised for charity, making it one of celebrity golf’s most popular events.

“All year long, I look forward to hosting my friends at the Ocean Club Golf Course,” said Michael Jordan. “There’s no place I’d rather be in January than in the Bahamas, on Paradise Island, raising money for some very worthy causes.”

Celebrity pairings in this year’s tournament included: John Smoltz & Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Brett Hull & Brandi Chastain, Ozzie Smith & Paul O’Neill, Ahmad Rashad & Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Jordan & Toni Kukoc, John Elway & Alonzo Mourning, Richard Dent & Ken Griffey Jr., Stone Phillips & Marcus Allen, Boris Kodjoe & Boris Becker, Mike Piazza & Josh Duhamel, and Bill Clinton & Scott Caan among others.

The event winners, Julius “Dr. J” Erving and John Smoltz, donated their winnings to individual charities close to their hearts. Erving donated $20,000 to the Cory Martin Erving Foundation in honor of his son who passed away in 2000, and Smoltz donated $20,000 to Kings Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, GA. Paradise Island Tourism Development Association (PITDA) was this year’s Presenting Sponsor. The Jordan Brand and ICON International were also major sponsors, among a range of others.

Josh Duhamel Bears It All For Conservation

Transformers star Josh Duhamel traveled to the shore of the Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba, earlier this week to raise awareness of the plight of polar bears.

The star joined scientists Dr. Ian Stirling and Dr. Steven Amstrup, members of the Scientific Advisory Council of Polar Bears International – a non-profit organization devoted to worldwide conservation of the polar bear through support of research and education – as part of their Thermo-STAT project.

“I’m blown away by the beauty of seeing these awesome creatures up close and personal,” said Duhamel. “I wanted to see the effects of climate change and confront the contradictory claims about polar bears first-hand. The plight of the polar bear is a symbol of what’s going on globally.”

The 36-year-old star – currently engaged to Fergie – recorded a PSA about polar bears while on his visit, and pledged to share simple steps with the world to make people aware of our global impact on the bear and their habitat.

“The bears sort of symbolize something global and if we think globally, we have to think locally and if we’re thinking locally we have to be conscious of things we can do to reduce, you know?” he said. “They’re just amazing creatures, they’re just awesome. The more I learn, the more interesting they are.”

The Thermo-STAT project is designed to alert the world that higher temperatures are having an immediate and negative impact on polar bear conservation due to global warming.

“In Los Angeles especially, we have got to travel more efficiently,” Duhamel said. “Reducing electricity as much as possible, and eating locally-grown, organic food are easy actions to take for most of us.”
