Tyler Perry Receives the NAACP Chairman Award

Successful filmmaker Tyler Perry will be awarded the Chairman’s Award at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards.

Chosen by NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond, the Chairman Award is bestowed in recognition of special achievement and phenomenal public service. Past award recipients include: Bono, U.S. President Barack Obama, Aretha Franklin, The Dave Matthews Band, Aaron McGruder and Janet Jackson.

Tyler Perry’s public service record grows every day. Recently, the actor donated $110,000 and a brand new 15-passenger van to the Atlanta-based homeless shelter Covenant House. In 2009, Perry celebrated the centennial anniversary of the NAACP by donating $1,000,000 to the civil rights organization. Without a doubt, Perry will continue to make huge impressions on and off the screen. Watch for Tyler Perry’s acceptance of the Chairman Award on Fox on February 26.

John Mayer And Tyler Perry Give Big To Help Haiti

John Mayer has given a double shot of charity to help survivors of the Haiti earthquake.

The singer has allowed the Red Cross to use his song The Heart of Life – as performed Larry King's Haiti: How You Can Help TV special – in a new PSA for the charity’s relief efforts. And if that isn’t enough, he has also given the Red Cross a donation of $500,000.

The singer joins movie mogul Tyler Perry in recent donations – Perry recently donated $1 million to relief efforts.

“I have raised my personal donation from $250,000 to $1 million,” he said. "I did this realizing that after the next big story comes along, the news media will pack up and leave the people of Haiti to fend for themselves. They always do.

“My plan is to do just what I did when I built those 20 houses for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Sometimes it’s best to wait for the frenzy to pass to really be effective. Haiti needs help now and there are a lot of people doing that, but they will also need help in the coming months.”

Perry plans to visit the devastated country in the near future to “see for myself how to put our donations to the best use.”

Socially Relevant Films Earn NAACP Image Award Nominations

The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Image Awards announced it’s nominees on Wednesday, January 4, in Beverly Hills.

The foreign film category has some particularly strong nominations in regards to social relevance. Among the nominees annouced by comedienne and writer Wanda Sykes were Sin Nombre, Skin, and The Stoning of Soraya M. Also in the best film category, the critical darling Precious garnered the most nominations overall.

What are these films about? Sin Nombre is in Spanish and revolves around Central American immigrants seeking the promise of the U.S. This is said to be a violent but telling story. Skin is a true story which takes place in South Africa, centering on a uniquely racist situation involving a girl who appears to be a light skinned Black person born to White parents during Aparthied South Africa. It features Sophie Okonedo. The Stoning of Soraya M is a gripping film adaption of the book by French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam’s 1994 book of the same name based on a true story. The film is mostly in Farsi but also in English. The Oscar nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and Jim Caviezel star in the film about a woman falsely accused of adultery then sentenced to stoning. This is a heartbreaking film meant to call attention to the travesty that still goes on today. A trailer can be seen here.

The leader of the pack among nominations, Precious, addresses incest, child abuse and poor self image regarding complexion. Precious is directed by Lee Daniels and produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Tyler Perry Donates To Homeless Shelter

Actor and director Tyler Perry has donated to a shelter for homeless youth in Atlanta.

Perry made a donation of $100,000 to Covenant House in Georgia to aid in renovation costs and also handed over a new 15-seat van to the organization.

“God bless Mr. Perry for this incredible gift to our kids,” said Covenant House president Kevin Ryan. “The van will be used to rescue young people from the hopelessness of the street. His generous donation will provide immediate help to kids in crisis as well as the long-term support that will transform their lives.”

Covenant House is the largest privately-funded agency in the Americas providing shelter and other services to homeless, runaway and throwaway youth. Established in New York City in 1972, Covenant House has facilities in 21 cities throughout the United States, Canada, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. Covenant House also operates 24-hour crisis hotlines in the United States and Mexico.
