Andre Agassi Grand Slam For Children Raises $26 Million For Charity

The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education (AAFE) raised more than $26.1 million, a record amount, at the 16th Grand Slam for Children benefit concert this weekend, in conjunction with partner and presenting sponsor, Longines.

A donation of $18 million from Kirk Kerkorian, $1.5 million from the Engelstad Family Foundation and $1 million from Windsong Trust combined with ticket sales and proceeds from a live auction accounted for the largest amount raised in a single night for the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. The funds benefit the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy (Agassi Prep), a tuition free public K-12 charter school serving students in historical West Las Vegas.

“I am both astounded and humbled by the generosity and compassion of our community, the artists, sponsors, partners and donors,” said Andre Agassi. “With strong support from our presenting sponsor Longines, the Engelstad Family, Windsong Trust and a truly magnanimous gift from Kirk Kerkorian, this record- breaking evening will make a positive difference in students’ lives as we continue to work to transform education.”

Elton John hosted another highly successful Grey Goose Winter Ball in the heart of Battersea Park in London on Saturday night.

This year’s Winter Ball – which once again benefitted the Elton John AIDS Foundation – featured the first ever elBulli experience on UK soil. elBulli has been ranked the world’s number one restaurant a record five times. Its chefs are pioneers in a new way of experiencing taste, stripping food back to a molecular level, isolating components and then rebuilding to their own design or vision.

Anderson Cooper To Host Elton John's Enduring Vision For Charity

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) will present its 10th annual An Enduring Vision benefit event at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City next week.

The October 26 event will see Anderson Cooper return as host, and there will be a performance by Smokey Robinson.

This year’s Enduring Vision Awards will be presented to to EJAF benefactors Bob and Tamar Manoukian, EJAF Advisory Board member Greg Gorman, and corporate philanthropic leader John Demsey, Group President, The Estée Lauder Companies and Chairman of the M·A·C AIDS Fund.  

La Toya Jackson Joins Forever Michael Tribute Lineup

With less than a week to go until the Michael Forever Tribute in Cardiff, Wales on October 8th, Michael Jackson’s sister La Toya Jackson has announced she will be among the performers.

Having put music performances behind her for almost twenty years, she has decided there is no better time to perform from her heart.

“I have put musical performance behind me for roughly two decades, but there will never be another magical moment such as this to celebrate Michael with his fans to perpetuate the importance of his legacy,” she said. “I am honoured to share the stage with the incredible performers in this line up and am certain that nothing would make my brother smile bigger or brighter than this tribute concert. In speaking with my mother yesterday, I asked her where she thinks Michael would rather have us be, in this courtroom filled with negativity and lies or on a stage celebrating his music, his legacy and his life and she said without a second of thought, ‘Celebrating his Life with family and fans. Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America (BGCA) have announced a star-studded new Public Service Advertising (PSA) campaign, featuring 21 notable Club alumni dramatically showcasing the impact of the Boys & Girls Club experience in transforming the lives of young people.

The Great Future Start Here PSA made its debut yesterday during an event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

On hand for the release of “Great Futures Start Here” was its director, Academy Award-winner Ron Howard, and Club alumnus Denzel Washington, who secured Howard’s support, along with that of producer Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment. The spot was filmed in June in Los Angeles.

Some of the stars set to appear at the Michael Jackson Memorial Concert in Wales in October have been announced.

Among the performers at Michael Forever, The Tribute Concert will be Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Craig David, Smokey Robinson, Leona Lewis, JLS and Alien Ant Farm.

Jennifer Lopez was in Times Square yesterday, June 10, to unveil a billboard as part of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America’s (BGCA) Be Great campaign.

The campaign – which was launched in 2008 – features a collection of celebrity alumni from the BGCA who have donated their childhood photos for advertising. Stars such as Denzel Washington, Martin Sheen, Shaquille O’Neal, Bill Cosby, Muhammad Ali, Swin Cash, Bill Clinton, Cuba Gooding Jr., Michael Jordan, Queen Latifah, Mario Lopez, John Mellencamp, Edward James Olmos, Smokey Robinson, John Singleton, Ruben Studdard, Usher, Courtney Vance, Mark Wahlberg, and Kerry Washington have all been part of the campaign.

Legendary singer Lionel Richie was honored with an Award of Excellence by the United Negro College Fund on Saturday night.

Celebrities such as Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Akon, Katharine McPhee and comedian Cedric the Entertainer attended the 31st annual An Evening of Stars event, held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

As part of Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America’s (BGCA) new advocacy campaign — BE GREAT — five-time Grammy award winner, philanthropist and Boys & Girls Club alumnus Usher has unveiled a new billboard featuring his childhood picture and a call-to-action — BE ICONIC. Usher joins 25 prominent alumni in the new advocacy campaign to help increase public awareness and understanding about the positive impact of Clubs.

From academic failure and gang violence to poverty, drugs and obesity, America’s youth face a daunting array of problems — with serious consequences and fewer safety nets at home and in the community. According to a 2007 BGCA alumni survey conducted by Harris Interactive, 57 percent of alumni reported, “The Club saved my life,” while another 28 percent credited Boys & Girls Clubs with keeping them in school.

“Growing up in the Club, I had the chance to experience a lot of positive things; it helped reinforce the values I learned at home including good character, leadership and giving back to my community, my country and my world,” said Usher. “It’s where I developed my love of singing and performing, received help with my homework, and it’s where I found a safe place to go after school.”

Denzel Washington, Martin Sheen, and Shaquille O’Neal have lent their childhood photos to the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America for a new advertising campaign.

The “BE GREAT” campaign launched last week, and aims to encourage volunteers to work at the clubs.

“What’s going on with children doesn’t worry me,” said the Oscar-winning actor. “What’s going on with adults worries me. If we are not more committed to these young people … they will go as far as we take them, so the onus is on us, not on the children. We’ve created this world for them, we are the ones that fall and we are the ones that can rectify it.”

Beyoncé Honored For Charity Work

Beyoncé Knowles was honored at a special gala on Saturday night for her charity work.

The Diamond Ball raised money for the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, an organization whose mission is to create awareness and generate funds for Miami Children’s Hospital, and featured performances by Smokey Robinson, Gloria Gaynor, and seven-year-old pianist Ethan Bortnick, who was playing to show his appreciation for the hospital for treating his younger brother’s heart troubles.

Tables for the concert cost up to $11,000, and profits went directly to the only licensed specialty hospital in South Florida exclusively for children.
