Morrissey Speaks Out Against Animal Suffering At Imperial College London

Former The Smiths front-man, Morrissey has joined the BUAV call for an independent inquiry into disturbing evidence of animal suffering and poor practice revealed at an Imperial College London animal research laboratory.

Morrissey is the latest celebrity to call out failings at Imperial College London discovered by a recent BUAV undercover investigation. Former ICL student and Queen guitarist Dr Brian May was “shocked and saddened” by the revelations, and “ashamed that it could have taken place in the University of my own training”. Brian May called for a fully independent inquiry in the hope that “this appalling cruelty will never be allowed to happen again”.

Yusuf Joins Chorus Of Support To Transfer Mali The Elephant To Sanctuary

Yusuf Islam, the acclaimed British-born musician and humanitarian formerly known as Cat Stevens, has issued a statement to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia in support of Mali the elephant’s transfer from the Manila Zoo to a sanctuary.

Mali is kept in solitary confinement – which experts say is extremely cruel to elephants, who are highly social – and is in constant pain from her foot ailments, as seen in this new video.

Stars Celebrate End Of Cosmetics Testing On Animals In Europe

Cruelty Free International, the global non-profit organization dedicated to ending cosmetics testing on animals worldwide, has been joined by celebrities Chrissie Hynde, Twiggy, Jenny Seagrove, Kimberly Wyatt and Joanna Lumley, to celebrate the end of cosmetics testing on animals in Europe.

“Cruelty-free beauty is here in the EU at last!” said Joanna Lumley. “I have been calling for this day with Cruelty Free International (BUAV) since 1991. Well done Cruelty Free International for your tireless work in the EU to end the terrible practice of testing cosmetics on animals.”

The final phase of the 7th amendment of the EU Cosmetics Directive, which is set to come into force on 11th March 2013, will mean that new cosmetic products and ingredients on sale in the EU will not be tested on animals anywhere in the world. The ban will affect all cosmetics including all toiletries and beauty products, from soap to toothpaste. This historic achievement is the culmination of over 20 years of campaigning spearheaded by the BUAV, founder of Cruelty Free International.

Chrissie Hynde Joins Appeal To EU To End Cosmetic Animal Tests

Singer-songwriter and lead singer of The Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde, has given her support to the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), a coalition of animal protection groups across the EU, with its No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end the import and sale of animal tested cosmetics in the EU.

At an event in Brussels on 18th October, the ECEAE handed in its petition with almost a quarter of a million signatures to the European Parliament, calling for No Exceptions, No Postponement, No Cruel Cosmetics.

Morrissey Urges Uniqlo To Say No To Sheep Abuse

As music legend Morrissey nears the end of his Japanese tour, the former Smiths frontman is joining the international outcry against the Australian wool industry’s abuse of sheep.

The singer has fired off a letter on behalf of PETA Asia to the president of Tokyo-based international clothing retailer Uniqlo to ask that the company follow the lead of Muji and other compassionate companies and stop using wool from Australian farmers who mutilate sheep in a practice called “mulesing,” in which large chunks of skin and flesh are cut from lambs’ backsides in a crude and cruel – and often ineffective – attempt to prevent maggot infestation.

“Years ago, I wrote a song called ‘Meat Is Murder’, and today I’m tempted to write a follow-up called ‘Mulesing Is Misery,’” writes Morrissey. “Australia [is] the only country in the world that still clings to this cruel and barbaric abomination. Won’t you please join the many international companies that have implemented a ban on wool from mulesed lambs?”

Morrissey Wants An End To Animal Testing For Cosmetics

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) is delighted to have the support of legendary singer Morrissey for its No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end animal testing for new cosmetics sold in the European Union.

Morrissey said, “Say no to injecting, force-feeding or forcing animals to inhale substances for a new lipstick or shampoo. Please join me in signing the BUAV No Cruel Cosmetics petition to stop the sale of new animal tested cosmetics in the EU.”

PETA UK Names Morrissey As Person Of The Year 2011

PETA UK has named Morrissey as its Person of the Year 2011.

From PETA.org.uk: "A long-time champion of animal rights and vegetarianism, this year the Lancashire born singer – described by NME as “one of the most influential artists ever” – has once again been using the limelight to shine a light on the terrible suffering that animals endure on factory farms and inside abattoirs.

“During his European tour, Morrissey had information tables with animal rights literature manned by friendly PETA volunteers who chatted with concertgoers and distributed thousands of vegetarian/vegan starter kits. He and his band wore shirts with animal rights messages on stage and played PETA US’ “Meet Your Meat” video during the shows to educate the audiences about the reality of life for animals on factory farms. He even convinced a huge Belgian music festival to go meat-free on the day of his performance!

According to PETA.org: “The VIPs featured on these unique postage sheets ditched meat from their diets either out of concern for their health, for the environment, or for animals—and our world would not be the same without their accomplishments. Although the individuals featured in this series seem very different at first glance, they are united in their respect for animals.”

Oxfam Ready For The Glastonbury Mud

It’s described as the scourge of British summer music festivals but new research by festival veteran Oxfam, a Glastonbury charity partner for 18 years, suggests that festival mud is very much embraced by music lovers and is even regarded as iconic.

This is good news for the charity which is asking festival-goers to ‘get your hands dirty’ as part of its new Grow campaign that aims to fix the broken food system that leaves billions hungry every day. The iconic music festival takes place this weekend, with performers this year including U2, Coldplay, Beyoncé Knowles, Morrissey, the Kaiser Chiefs, KT Tunstall and many more.

According to Oxfam, nearly three quarters of festival-goers (71%) aren’t put off by the muddy prospect of bad weather. When asked to pick the top three things they most associate with British music festivals, over a third of adults across Britain (36%) regard mud as an iconic element of British music festivals. Northern festival goers were the keenest of all on a muddy festival with almost a quarter (22%) of them embracing mud as ‘all part of the experience’, compared to only 11 per cent of Southern and just 7 per cent of London festival-goers.

Celebrity Support For Anti-Bloodsports Charity

A British charity has raised celebrity support against fox hunting and other blood sports.

Among the stars who have given their names to the League Against Cruel Sports’ campaigns are The Smiths’ Morrissey and Johnny Marr, as well as Ricky Gervais, Brian Cox, Gemma Atkinson, Tom Conti, Tony Robinson, Bill Oddie, David Jason, Alesha Dixon, former Dr Who Colin Baker and Watership Down author Richard Adams.

The League is a charity that brings together people who want to stop cruelty to animals in the name of sport. Established in 1924, the organization successfully uses lawful investigations, campaigning and lobbying to make a difference in the UK and around the world.
