For 50 years, the entertainment industry has embraced the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

When Danny Thomas set out to build the hospital in 1962, some of the biggest stars of that era such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Dinah Shore and Jack Benny donated their time and talents to help raise awareness and funds for St. Jude. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), in partnership with America’s Promise Alliance, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, announced today it has added three new speakers who will help launch a significant new initiative to combat the dropout epidemic in the United States on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 10:15 a.m. ET live on Facebook.

The speakers – Emmy-award winning actress America Ferrera of Ugly Betty, actor from the hit drama series CSI:NY Hill Harper, and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller – will discuss the role communities play in boosting graduation rates. Aimee Garcia will also take part.

Michael McKean Wins $1 Million For Charity In Jeopardy Final

Actor Michael McKean (“Laverne and Shirley” and star of Broadway’s “Superior Donuts”) prevailed as champion of the Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational Tournament during the weekend — winning $1 million for his charity the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF). This is the biggest amount ever awarded to charity in “Jeopardy!” history. It is also the largest single donation ever received by the IMF.

Myeloma is the second most common blood cancer after lymphomas, affecting an estimated 750,000 people worldwide. McKean became passionate for the cause when his friend, musician Lee Grayson, passed away from myeloma eight years ago. Regarding today’s victory, McKean said, “If some breakthroughs can be made or more research can be done due to this win, it would be incredible. There are so many amazing people at IMF who do great work.”

According to Susie Novis, president and co-founder of the IMF, McKean’s donation will be used for a special fund in honor of McKean and Grayson. “The money will fund research to find a cure and to help patients and their families through education,” Novis said. “His win has shown us how empowering being informed can be — it can change the lives of people all over the world!”

Celebrities Tee Off For George Lopez Charity Golf

The stars hit the golf course in beautiful Toluca Lake, California on Monday, May 5th, to support the Ann and George Lopez Foundation. This was the third annual celebrity golf tournament and the first fundraiser to benefit the Foundation.

The sold out event raised over $425,000 to assist underprivileged children and adults confronting challenges in education and health; the Foundation was created to raise awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.

The Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Charity Invitational is well under way, and will be taping its semi-final and final rounds this weekend in Los Angeles.

The competition started last September, with contestants such as Dana Delany, Doug Savant, Hill Harper, David Duchovny, Anderson Cooper and a host of other famous faces playing the game show for charities such as UNICEF, the American Cancer Society, the Scleroderma Research Foundation, the Michael J. Hill Harper Becomes A Scholarship Namesake

CSI vet Hill Harper can now add scholarship namesake under his list of many achievements.

The talented star recently had an educational award created in his honor. The award is managed by the United Negro College Fund and will be an exclusive scholarship of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America. The Hill Harper Mentoring Scholarship will be granted to financially challenged college bound students.

Harper comments: “I am honored to have a scholarship that represents so much that I believe in named for me… at a time when President Obama is urging Americans to serve and First Lady Michelle Obama is asking us to consider making that service mentoring at-risk children.”

Stars To Flock To Purple Inauguration Ball

The Inaugural Purple Ball will take place on the evening of Barack Obama’s inauguration and will feature a host of celebrities raising money for charity.

A portion of the proceeds from The Inaugural Purple Ball will benefit the Eracism Foundation, a charity established in 2006 by Academy Award Winner Lou Gossett Jr that aims to better society by addressing the negative impacts of racism. The organization provides programs that foster cultural diversity, historical enrichment, education, and antiviolence initiatives in an effort to eradicate racism. The evening will also honor American troops stationed overseas.

Affleck Tops Charity Stars in Denver

Denver saw an outpouring of celebrity love during last week’s DNC, with Ben Affleck leading the philanthropic pack.

On the Tuesday night, Affleck took part in a poker tournament, along with Richard Dreyfuss and Montel Williams, which ultimately raised over $60,000 for the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

“A lot of important organizations use this environment and the people who are here, celebrities, members of Congress, to try and raise money. This is not a Democratic or Republican group, this is a group serving our veterans,” Affleck said of the charity.
