Paul McCartney Joins Charity Concert Line Up

Paul McCartney will headline a gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall in aid of Children in Need. The concert was organized by Take That singer Gary Barlow and will take place on November 12.

McCartney will be sharing the stage with Muse, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol, Leona Lewis, Dizzee Rascal and Shirley Bassey.

Sir Terry Wogan, announcing the line up on his Radio 2 show, said, “This concert is helping to make a really special year for Children in Need.”

Tickets will be allocated by ballot. Fans can register for a max of 2 tickets per person at www.seetickets.com/childreninneed. Registration is open until noon on October 20, and those whose names are drawn will be notified by email.

The concert will broadcast on BBC One the weekend before November 20, which is the day of Children in Need’s main appeal.

Iconic Stars Reveal Inspirations For Charity Calendar

British charity CLIC Sargent is to benefit from sales of a new calendar featuring the inspiration selections of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and other icons for the music world.

Music and entertainment specialist HMV is to mark the third anniversary of its acclaimed my inspiration campaign by featuring memorable highlights in a charity calendar for 2009/2010.

These include the my inspiration selections of Bob Dylan – who selected Scottish poet, Robert Burns; Bono and Paul McCartney, who, in turn, cite Bob Dylan as theirs; Paul Weller, who was first inspired by the songwriting of Lennon and McCartney; Bruce Springsteen, who was influenced by Blues performer Woodie Guthrie; and Deborah Harry, who found inspiration in the songs of Leonard Cohen.

My inspiration invites iconic and exciting new artists to share with their fans the song lyric or lines of verse that have inspired them in their life and in their work. Beatlemania Returns For Charity

Beatlemania has hit the headlines once again this week, with the release of the Fab Four’s remastered CD collection, their Rock Band video game, and a popular British presenter’s efforts to re-record their hits for charity.

A whole new generation of fans are currently being exposed to the music of John, Paul, George and Ringo through the release of Rock Star, and a number of limited edition Xbox 360 consoles are available to benefit Doctors Without Borders. The consoles are available at eBay.

Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971 working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, personally selected the charity as the beneficiary of these proceeds.

In other Beatles news this week, British TV and radio presenter Sir Terry Wogan has been busy in a recording studio with Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman laying down tracks of classic Fab Four songs for the upcoming Bandaged Together album to benefit Children in Need.

The project has been organised by a group of Terry Wogan fans known as The TOGs (Terry’s Old Geezers and Gals).

“Last year, thanks to the TOGs, we raised about £3 million for Children In Need,” said Sir Terry. “We had Bandaged One which sold an awful lot and made hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity. The idea this year is Bandaged Two and we are hoping to raise even more money.”

The album – which will feature Sir Terry’s take on All You Need Is Love – will be released next month.

Paul McCartney To Co-Chair Actors Fund Gig

Paul McCartney is co-chairing a one-night-only concert to raise money for the Actors Fund of America.

With an all-star cast to be announced soon, the Actors Fund is proud to present Chance and Chemistry – A Centennial Celebration of the Music of Frank Loesser. Hosted by Annette Bening, Kevin McCollum and Jonathan Tisch, the concert will be directed and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific, Sunday in the Park with George, Altar Boyz) with musical direction by Brad Haak.

Oscar, Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Frank Loesser has been called the most versatile of all Broadway composers, having supplied both music and lyrics for such varied works as Guys & Dolls, Where’s Charley?, The Most Happy Fella and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.

The Actors Fund is a nationwide human services organization that helps all professionals in performing arts and entertainment. The Fund is a safety net, providing programs and services for those who are in need, crisis or transition.

Big Stars To Hit The Stage Again At Rockwell

In 1990 some of the world’s biggest musicians put on one of the most important gigs of all time.

In aid of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, the event at Knebworth featured the likes of Robert Plant, Pink Floyd and Paul McCartney. An incredible line-up of former Silver Clef award winners performed to 120,000 fans in a show that raised over three million pounds.

Now nineteen years later a new generation are set to do it again at the O2 arena. Rockwell promises to be the star-studded musical event of the year with some of the world’s most influential musicians sharing a stage with the best of UK talent.

For one night only – September 11 – Rockwell will bring together some of the world’s biggest bands and musicians. Performing never-to-be-repeated collaborations at The O2 will be Ronan Keating, Lulu, Razorlight, Joss Stone, David Gray, Tom Jones, Robert Plant, Gabriella Cilmi, Supergrass and many more.

Birthday Wishes For Aung San Suu Kyi

People from all over the world have put down 64 words on a new website in support of Aung San Suu Kyi for her 64th birthday .

Burma’s junta has held the pro-democracy leader under house arrest for over half of the past two decades and, charged in May for breaking the terms of her house arrest, Suu Kyi is now facing trial.

Outraged by the Burmese military’s actions, people are using the 64 for Aung San Suu Kyi website as a protest platform.

Paul McCartney wrote, “Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspiration to her country and the rest of the world. I truly admire her infallible resolve and her determination to stand up for what she believes in. It is vital that Aung San Suu Kyi is released so that she can govern the people who elected her and give Burma back the freedom we all take for granted.”

Bono and U2 posted something more poetic: “Packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been/A place that has to be believed to be seen/You could have flown away/A singing bird in an open cage/Who will only fly, fly for freedom/Walk on, walk on/What you’ve got they can’t deny it/Can’t sell it, can’t buy it/Walk on, walk on/Stay safe tonight.”

Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, had this to say: “Our fellow Elder, Aung San Suu Kyi, is the symbol of a more hopeful, tolerant and peaceful Burma. We’re profoundly troubled by her illegal incarceration and call on world leaders, and especially Asian members, to do everything in their power to secure her release along with all other political prisoners. We hope to embrace our dear sister in person on her 64th birthday.”

Suu Kyi’s birthday has come and gone. She’s still in jail.

Stars Sign Mini For British Forces Morale

A car signed by some of Britain’s favorite stars will go up for auction at Bonhams Auction House tonight, July 3, to raise money for the British Forces Foundation’s Lap of Honour charity, which aims to boost morale in Britiain’s Armed Forces.

For the last year, the Mini cooper – adorned with a Union Jack on the roof – has been traveling around Britain, gathering autographs from well-known faces such as Michael Caine, Richard Branson, Sienna Miller, Simon Cowell, Terry Wogan, Joan Collins, Roger Moore, Michael Parkinson, Cliff Richard, Ranulph Fiennes, Tom Jones, Hugh Grant, Judi Dench, James Blunt, Katherine Jenkins, Jackie Stewart, Rod Stewart, Lewis Hamilton, Kate Moss, Joe Calzaghe, Elton John, David Beckham, Magaret Thatcher, Eric Clapton, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, Joanna Lumley, Helen Mirren, Gordon Brown, Paul McCartney and many more.

Paul McCartney Launches Meat Free Mondays

Sir Paul McCartney is spearheading a campaign to encourage people to "go vegetarian“ for at least one day every week. Meat Free Monday is a food campaign to encourage the world to help slow climate change by reducing their meat consumption by having one meat free day a week.

The former Beatle is leading the star-studded campaign that includes Stella McCartney, Yoko Ono, Kelly Osbourne, Moby, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Ricky Gervais, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Sheryl Crow, artist Jeff Koons and chefs Yotam Ottolenghi and Giorgio Locatelli.

“I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world,“ said McCartney. "Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once. For instance it not only addresses pollution, but better health, the ethical treatment of animals, global hunger and community and political activism.”

The UK’s Food Climate Research Network states that food production is responsible for between 20-30 percent of global green house gas emissions. The United Nations has supported the figures, saying that the livestock sector is ‘one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global’.

“A couple of years ago the United Nations came out with a report that said for people to eat less meat would have a big impact on the environment,“ McCartney told Sky News. “It’s all got a bit out of hand and I think people want to do their bit to bring it back into line, and this is an answer we’ve got involved in. A few years ago you’d say to people recycling is good. And they’d stick it all in one bin anyway. I mean I was the same. Now you don’t see that. You go round to people’s houses and they’ve got the bins and stuff. I think the time is right now for that idea.”

The Meat Free Monday campaign states that meat consumption has quadrupled since 1961, and poultry consumption has increased 10-fold.

“The reality is a lot of people don’t eat meat every day,“ said Stella McCartney. “You don’t have to be a vegetarian to cut out one day of meat consumption. It’s something anyone can do.”

“I thought this was a great idea,“ Sir Paul told reporters at the campaign’s official launch yesterday. “To just reduce your meat intake maybe by one day a week and this would seriously benefit the planet. It’s kind of easy to do. You’ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you’re all running down to the gym to try and work it off – so just have a meat-free Monday.”

Beatles Launch Game With Charity Download

Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were in California earlier this week to launch the new Xbox The Beatles:Rock Band game. During the event, the musicians announced that one of the songs from the game, All You Need Is Love, will be released exclusively as a download through Xbox Live, with proceeds to benefit Doctors Without Borders.

McCartney and Starr joined Yoko Ono – widow of John Lennon – and Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison, in unveiling the game at Microsoft’s 2009 E3 Media and Business Summit.

All You Need Is Love will be released exclusively as a downloadable song on September 9, with all proceeds benefiting Doctors Without Borders. Also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, this international humanitarian aid organisation provides emergency medical aid in more than 80 countries. Established in 1971, Doctors Without Borders provides aid “to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need and reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, to challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.“ The organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

Beatles Day 2009 To Benefit Charity Appeals

Fans of the Fab Four around the world will have the chance to celebrate their favorite band during Beatles Day 09 and raise money for the Imagine Appeal for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Marina Dalglish Appeal for a radiotherapy centre in Liverpool.

Officially launched by Julia Baird – John Lennon’s sister – and Ricky Tomlinson, the event will take place on July 10 in places as diverse as China, Russia, New Zealand and of course Liverpool.

This year will mark the second time the event will be held, with last year’s homage to John, Paul, George and Ringo – which gained support from Pink, Russell Brand and the Sugababes – raising over £45,000. Liverpool will once again host a concert as part of the event, and there will be loads of merchandise and happenings available.

July 10 was chosen as the date as it is the anniversary of the Beatles triumphant return to Liverpool from the States and the premiere of the film ‘Hard Day’s Night’ in 1964. The streets were lined with thousands of adoring fans, and organizers hope to re-create the same sort of Beatlemania this year.

“It’s 24 hours when people can show their love for the Beatles and celebrate the legacy of their music,“ said Chas Cole, Summer Pops promoter. "The concert at the Echo Arena will be a great way to finish, but BEATLES DAY is really a chance for the ordinary people of Liverpool and other towns and cities all over the world to take part in Beatles related fundraising activities and events. The most important thing is to have fun whilst raising money.

“Liverpool will be the centre of events on 10th July. It would be a great time to visit and let the people show you what makes this city truly great; its heritage, humor, boundless enthusiasm under pressure and above all, its ability to not take itself too seriously. BEATLES DAY here we come!”

The Imagine Appeal is a fundraising campaign launched in 2005 with the help of Yoko Ono to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital – the largest children’s hospital in Europe. Since 1914, the hospital has led the way in the care of sick children and now treats more than 200,000 young patients every year. And with patrons such as Wayne Rooney, the Imagine Appeal aims to make the work of the hospital easier.

Paul McCartney Calls For Ban On Seal Products

Sir Paul McCartney has called on the European Parliament to implement a ban on the sale of all seal products.

The former Beatle has added his name to a petition organized by The Humane Society and Respect For Animals urging the Members of European Parliament (MEPs) to make the trading of goods made from seals illegal, in order to stop hunters from brutally beating the creatures for their meat and skin.

“The fate of millions of seal pups is in the hands of elected members of the European Parliament,” said McCartney. "In the next few weeks, they will have a historic opportunity to stop the cruel trade in seal products throughout the European Union.

“I’ve signed the petition to ask MEPs to seize this momentous opportunity to end, once and for all, this trade in animal cruelty. Please, make your voice heard too — join me in signing this important petition today.”

Paul McCartney has long been a supporter of the seal protection campaign, and visited the harp seal nursery off Canada’s east coast in 2006. According to the Humane Society, "This year’s Canadian seal kill — the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth — has just taken place off the country’s east coast. The 2009 quota was set at 280,000 animals — and more than one million seal pups have been clubbed or shot to death over the last four years.“

Remaining Beatles Reunite At Benefit Concert

Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited for a special benefit concert in New York on Saturday, April 4.

The pair came together on stage to perform With A Little Help From My Friends, playing together for the first time since George Harrison’s tribute show in 2002. They played three songs together in total on Saturday, Including I Saw Her Standing There.

“At this point we would like to introduce somebody to you who you know, you’ve heard his name,” Sir Paul said as he introduced his former bandmate. “He’s going to come out here and play you a little song this joyful night. Ladies and gentlemen: Billy Shears!!”

Proceeds from the show – which also featured Sheryl Crow, Moby, Donovan, Ben Harper and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder – went to the David Lynch Foundation, set up by filmmaker David Lynch to provide funds for in-school “Quiet Time” programs utilizing the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique. In the past year, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars for thousands of students, teachers, and parents to learn to meditate. The Foundation also provides funds for independent research institutions to assess the effects of the program on creativity, intelligence, brain functioning, academic performance, ADHD and other learning disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The filmmaker attributes much of his creativity to the practice.

“It gives me great pleasure to be part of this evening,“ said Starr. “I feel the aims of this charity are wonderful.”

Ellen DeGeneres Awarded By The Humane Society

The stars gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, March 28, for The Humane Society’s 23rd annual Genesis Awards, held in tribute of the organization’s ProtectSeals Campaign.

Special guests such as internationally acclaimed photographer Nigel Barker, Corey Feldman, Hal Sparks, Jorja Fox, James Cromwell, “Bones” star Emily Deschanel, former Oakland Raider Jarrod Cooper, Jennifer Coolidge, Carrie Ann Inaba, “Big Love’s” Ginnifer Goodwin and many more were on hand to present awards to a variety of celebrities, shows, and activists who have spent the last year making the world a better place for animals.

The major award of the night – the Wyler Award – went to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi for using their wedding and Ellen’s talkshow as an opportunity to publicize to a broad audience their ethical decision to avoid animal products in the hope of influencing public behavior. After viewing videotaped congratulations from Sir Paul McCartney, both DeGeneres and de Rossi spoke about their journey toward ethical living and the changes they have made in their lives to reduce animal suffering.

“People need to understand that animals are thinking, feeling beings who have a right to a free life,” said DeGeneres.

Also throughout the evening, guests were treated to special video treats from stars such as Heather Mills and Lily Tomlin.

Eric Clapton Signs Guitar For Leukaemia Children

A guitar signed by Eric Clapton was just one of the items that were featured in a charity auction held in the UK last weekend that raised over £6,000 (US$8,500) for Children With Leukaemia.

The guitar – which was also signed by Mike Rutherford from Genesis and Procol Harum singer Gary Brooker – went under the hammer for £500 at the event, held in Norwich. Also up for auction was a guitar signed by Green Day, which sold for £840, and a Clapton-signed DVD of a Cream reunion at the Albert Hall that sold for £200.

Children With Leukaemia is the UK’s leading charity dedicated exclusively to fighting Britain’s biggest childhood cancer. For more than 20 years, they have been helping children affected by leukaemia. They fund research into causes and treatments, support families through welfare programmes and campaign on their behalf. Their current fundraising campaign is being fronted by British celebrity Chris Tarrant, and the charity also enjoys support from Jonathan Ross, Judi Dench, Phil Collins, Joanna Lumley, Paul McCartney and many more.

War Child Album Cover Artwork To Be Auctioned

Artist John Squire’s artwork for the new War Child Heroes compilation is to be auctioned off for the charity.

The former Stone Roses guitarist has donated the image for the online auction on eBay.

“For me the appeal of War Child is pretty simple, they help the hungry, the displaced and the traumatised children in certain war zones to deal with that situation and they involve them in deciding how that help is organised," he said. “Anything I can do to support them is no trouble at all.”

It is the third time the musician/artist has created a cover for the charity’s benefit albums.

“I did the first two War Child albums, so why not make it a hat trick?” Squire told NME.COM. “They told me Bowie and the Ramones might be involved, so the first two things I offered them were based on lyrics. They rejected those, I think over the last few years I’ve forgotten how to make record sleeves! So this is the final offering, it’s a bit literal now. I did some exhaustive research, found some psycho website full of guns.”

Also up for auction are copies of the Heroes album and t-shirts signed by Coldplay.

The album features a series of once-in-a-lifetime collaborations between some of the best known names in the music world and up-and-coming stars – a concept that mirrors one of the intrinsic aims of War Child’s worldwide efforts in war zones across the world: to place faith in the next generation. The project paired stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Brian Wilson with up-and-comers such as Duffy and The Hold Steady.

As reported by Look To The Stars back in January, Paul McCartney is to headline a charity concert to benefit filmmaker David Lynch’s meditation charity. We can now announce the music icon will be joined by his former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr.

After initially not confirming that the two stars would share the stage together, a UK spokesperson has now announced that the pair will definitely perform at least one song together – making it a reunion of the surviving members of The Beatles. They last performed together in public at a tribute show for George Harrison in 2002.

Proceeds from the show will go to the David Lynch Foundation, set up by the filmmaker to provide funds for in-school “Quiet Time” programs utilizing the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique. In the past year, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars for thousands of students, teachers, and parents to learn to meditate. The Foundation also provides funds for independent research institutions to assess the effects of the program on creativity, intelligence, brain functioning, academic performance, ADHD and other learning disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The filmmaker attributes much of his creativity to the practice.

“It gives me great pleasure to be part of this evening,“ said Starr. “I feel the aims of this charity are wonderful.”

Tickets for the show – which also features Sheryl Crow, Moby, Donovan, Ben Harper and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on April 4 – go on sale on Monday.

Paul Weller To Headline Cancer Research Gig

Musician Paul Weller will play a special charity gig in London later this month.

The former frontman of The Jam and Style Council will join Lemar and singer songwriter Paulo Nutini at Cancer Research UK’s ‘Sound and Vision’ event at London’s Abbey Road studios on February 26.

“I’m proud to be associated with this event and to be supporting Cancer Research UK’s amazing work,” said Weller.

As previously reported by Look To The Stars, the event will feature champagne and canapés, access to the recording studios where The Beatles recorded, a stunning exhibition and auction of images featuring iconic musicians by famous photographers, the opportunity to purchase a piece of music history in a live auction – featuring an Epiphone guitar signed by Paul Weller, ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, Queen’s Brian May and former The Darkness guitarist Justin Hawkins – live performances, and the chance to rub shoulders with celebrity guests.

Stella McCartney Designs Tees For Comic Relief

British designer Stella McCartney has designed a line of T-shirts to raise money for Comic Relief and has called on the help of some of her celebrity friends to help promote them.

Advertising campaigns for the new Tees – one of which features a photo of her father, Paul McCartney, with The Beatles – feature Claudia Schiffer, Gwyneth Paltrow and Keira Knightley in photos shot by McCartney’s sister, Mary.

’It’s a real honor to be involved in such a tremendous cause and be a part of the Red Nose Day campaign 2009,“ said Stella McCartney. "The designs of the T-shirts were inspired by iconic images of iconic people by iconic photographers and adding an element of humor to them.’

McCartney has designed each t-shirt with iconic images from famous photographers like Herb Ritts, David Bailey and her mother, Linda McCartney. Every t-shirt sold helps raises vital funds for Comic Relief. 100% of the cotton has been sourced from Fairtrade certified organic cotton co-operatives in Africa.

Paul McCartney To Join Pearl Jam For Meditation Concert

Sir Paul McCartney is set to share the stage with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to benefit filmmaker David Lynch’s meditation charity.

Lily Allen To Go Abroad With War Child

British singer Lily Allen has announced her plans to travel overseas for charity and explained why.

“I sometimes feel like my life is a bit empty – as ridiculous as that sounds to some people, a bit vacuous,“ she told Q Radio host Samanthi. "It is pop music and people do talk about it too much and sometimes I feel like I want to have a bit more substance in my life.

“I am going to be going to Afghanistan or the Congo in a few weeks to help War Child. They want me to go there and see how the money I have earned for them in the past is being used. And that is the stuff I get really excited about.”

War Child is a network of independent organizations, working across the world to help children affected by war, and advancing the cause of peace through investing hope in the lives of children caught up in the horrors of war.

The charity is currently getting ready to release their long awaited Heroes benefit album on February 16. The CD features a series of once-in-a-lifetime collaborations between some of the best known names in the music world and up-and-coming stars – a concept that mirrors one of the intrinsic aims of War Child’s worldwide efforts in war zones across the world – to place faith in the next generation. Stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Brian Wilson have selected one of their best-known classic songs and nominated a new artist to record a cover of the track. Patrons of the event include legendary Beatles producer George Martin and Whispering Bob Harris. Last year’s event raised over £160,000 for vital cancer research with live performances by Beverley Knight, 10cc and The Brand New Heavies and auction items such as a one-off Rickenbacker guitar designed and signed by R.E.M’s Peter Buck and handwritten lyrics from Bryan Ferry. Springsteen Chooses Rockers For Charity Album

The long-delayed Heroes charity album will finally get its release in February, and anticipation is already high from music fans and musicians alike.

“We’d already done ‘Atlantic City’ at a charity benefit, so we kind of had an arrangement worked up, so we decided to record that," Craig Finn, lead singer with The Hold Steady told XFM radio after Bruce Springsteen chose the Brooklyn-based band to cover his song for Heroes. “It’s a pretty fun song, and I’m pretty happy with our version of it. We’ve been compared to Bruce Springsteen a lot, and he is a hero to all of us. It’s flattering that he’d think of us, given the choice. We hope our version of the song conveys the respect we have for him as an artist.”

I think Duffy’s version of ‘Live And Let Die’ is great – I was really impressed. The breadth of talent on this project is amazing; it’s great that so many people gave their time, energy and support to this initiative. I urge everyone to support War Child.”

The album will be released on February 16, 2009.

Paul McCartney's Guitar Auctioned For ActionAid

A handmade guitar owned by Sir Paul McCartney was due to go under the hammer for charity in London last night, November 25.

The black acoustic/electric guitar was made especially by Takamine Guitars and has his name inscribed in mother of pearl on the fret board. A pair of the guitars were presented to the former Beatle after a tour 10 years ago.

The guitar was auctioned as part of ActionAid’s Call My Wine Bluff event held to raise money for the charity’s work fighting poverty and injustice worldwide. Based on the classic TV game show, Call my Bluff, special celebrity guests included Emma Thompson, David Mitchell, Sue Perkins, Sean Lock, Hugh Dennis and Tim Brooke-Taylor – all of whom tried to trick guests into believing a story behind the wines they were tasting.

“This was an inspiring night,” said Thompson. “During the credit crunch people came to help those with no credit to crunch. I was proud of them and hopeful that these difficult times are teaching us that we are all connected and we all need to help one another. I really hope we do this event annually. As well as being very moving it raised a lot of cash and was such good fun.”

ActionAid reaches over 13 million of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world and helps them fight for and gain their rights to food, shelter, work, education, and healthcare. Established in 1972, they have been working to fight poverty for over 35 years.

The event raised well over £180,000 (US$360,000) for ActionAid.

Special Beatles Memorablilia Up For Auction

Sir Paul McCartney has donated a very special piece of music memorabilia to a charity auction.

The 66-year-old former Beatle responded to an appeal from Annie Mawson, founder and chief executive of Sunbeams Music Trust, by sending her a signed document that could have been the inspiration for one of the Fab Four’s most well-known songs.

Eleanor Rigby was released on The Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver, and McCartney has donated a wage slip of a household maid named E. Rigby from Liverpool – dated 1911 – to an auction being organized by Mawson.

“I wrote a letter to Paul McCartney in 1989 on pink paper asking for half a million pounds to help provide music therapy to help children with disabilities,“ said Mawson. “I also told him how his music had helped children at Roundhills Special School in Kendal, Cumbria, where I was a music teacher, before it closed. By the end of the letter I was getting quite emotional and I wrote that I didn’t want his money. I just wanted him to know how much joy his music has brought.”

Nine months later, she received a reply.

“I opened it and inside was this beautiful, ancient document,” she said. “It was spine-shivering really. Partly because he responded in such a personal way.”

Sunbeams Music Trust was established in 1992 to provide group music therapy for children with disabilities and special needs, as well as adults with Alzheimer’s. They also provide music therapy for those with dementia, stroke sufferers, and accident victims.

The artifact will be auctioned in London later this month, along with two guitars owned by Sir Cliff Richard and one played by the Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock.
