Paul McCartney Speaks Of Using His Name For Causes

Sir Paul McCartney thinks the fame that comes with celebrity is a handy thing with regards to promoting causes, and should definitely be used, citing George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 and Bob Geldof’s Live Aid concert for Ethiopia’s famine relief in 1985 as examples.

“I think it is quite a good idea to use your celebrity for what you see as being the good of people,” McCartney told the Globe and Mail. “George probably started that whole thing [with the Concert for Bangladesh].”

McCartney lends his name to causes too. Earlier this month he participated in Brussels Rally for Seals – the mass rally to ban seal product trade in the European Union – by video broadcast.

In the video, McCartney tells of his visit to Canada’s east coast to see where the world’s largest annual baby seal slaughter takes place (Namibia hosts the second largest). He says, “Stopping the import of seal fur into the European Union could really put an end to this brutality once and for all – please ask the EU to ban this terrible trade today.”

Also this month, McCartney launched a £2 million fundraising campaign to support Paralympic athletes heading to the Beijing Games and beyond. The video ad, showing athletes in action with the Beatles’ “Live and Let Die” playing in the background, leaves a powerful impression of athletic competition.

Pleased to be able to use his star status to influence, McCartney says, “I think it is a great thing. It can obviously affect people’s thinking.”

Sir Paul McCartney Busy With Charity Campaigns

Sir Paul McCartney will appear in an advertising campaign in Britain this month to encourage people to support the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

The campaign, organized by ParalympicsGB, will ask people to donate cash to help disabled athletes who want to compete in the games, and McCartney hopes his input will help the future of disability sport.

“I met leading Paralympic dressage rider Sophie Christiansen and was completely blown away by her skill, dedication and the fact that she had won a gold medal for Britain, so I felt I had to do something,” said the 66-year-old ex-Beatle. “My suggestion was simple. Why not create an ad that would highlight the work of ParalympicsGB and call on the British public to donate much needed money.”

McCartney has also been on the campaign trail for Canadian Harp seals in the last few days. He appeared in a special video shown during an anti-seal hunting video played at a rally in Brussels on Tuesday, urging demonstrators fight for a European seal products import ban.

“Stopping the import of seal fur into the European Union could really put an end to this brutality once and for all,” he said. “Please ask the EU to ban this terrible trade today.”

It is not the first time the singer has campaigned for an end to the slaughter of thousands of Harp seals that takes place in Canada every year. He visited the country with ex-wife Heather Mills in 2006 to ask Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end the “heartbreaking” hunt that has left a “stain” on the Canadian character.

Other celebrities to support the end to the slaughter include Slash, Martin Sheen, Mick Jagger, and Brigitte Bardot.

Sir Paul Plays For Peace In Kiev

There was thunder, there was rain, but the music still rang loud and true over Kiev on Saturday night, when Sir Paul McCartney played what is being billed as the largest concert ever held in the Ukraine.

The former Beatle – who turns 66 next week – opened with his 1965 song “Drive My Car” in front of 350,000 people who turned up in the city’s Independence Square. The venue was the site of the Orange Revolution in 2004, when peaceful mass protests overturned a fraudulent election and brought a pro-Western opposition leader to power, and the concert reminded attendees of their freedom.

Although the concert was free, organizers asked for donations to be put towards diagnostic equipment for Ukraine’s National Cancer Institute’s children’s department. Many children now seek treatment abroad because the Ukraine lacks the necessary equipment. Contributions have already reached $600,000, with more to come in.

The concert follows a similar concert by Elton John in the city last year which raised awareness for the country’s AIDS problem.

Sir Paul McCartney has teamed up with TV chef Jamie Oliver for a new charity initiative involving awesome downloads.

The Night Of A 1000 Dinners is the annual, global initiative of Adopt-A-Minefield that encourages people to host dinners and collect donations to help landmine survivors and their families and allow communities to return land to productive use. And to celebrate the “Dining to Demine” theme, Jamie Oliver is offering a range of exclusive free recipes for the event.

Sir Paul is also doing his bit for the event by encouraging people to be a guest at his own virtual Night of a Thousand Dinners Celebration by making a minimum donation of $25. Registered guests will receive a special gift via email from Paul – a download of an exclusive track called Lifelong Passion, a song the 65-year-old singer recorded under the name of the Fireman, and the result of a collaboration with respected producer Youth.

Paul McCartney Sells Amp For Landmine Initiative

Sir Paul McCartney is back where he belongs – at the forefront of a charity initiative.

The 65-year-old has donated a signed amplifier to an auction benefiting No More Landmines, a charity that combats the threat of the lethal weapons.

And it is not the first time the singer has been involved in championing the organization. Last month the singer led a host of celebrities in signing a petition calling on the Government to work towards a strong treaty for a ban on the production, use, transfer and stockpiling of all cluster bombs.

Bidding on the amp starts on June 9 on eBay, and a link to the auction page can be found on the No More Landmines website.

Captain Planet Fights For The Environment

Captain Planet is back! And thanks to Ted Turner, the super hero who has battled eco-villains such as the radioactive Duke Nukem and toxic waste polluter Sly Sludge is once again fighting for the very Earth that we inhabit.

The cartoon hero made an appearance at a special auction held last week to celebrate Earth Day that featured guitars signed by Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, trips to Costa Rica and Turner’s Vermejo Park ranch, as well as a dinner with Turner himself. The auction was hosted by Chevy Chase, who set up the Centre For Environmental Education with his wife 18 years ago to strive for environmental understanding.

Proceeds from the auction went to the Captain Planet Foundation, an organization established by Turner in 1991 and inspired by his successful, educational, and entertaining cartoon series. The Foundation provides a unique opportunity for schools and organizations around the world to present their environmental projects to the Captain himself to receive the seed money to grow their ideas into community service learning projects.

Paul McCartney - Back in The USSR... Almost

Sir Paul McCartney is to perform to hundreds of thousands of fans at a free concert in the Ukraine in June, in the spirit of global hope and unity.

The 65-year-old singer has been invited by Ukrainian tycoon Viktor Pinchuk, the son-in-law of the former president Leonid Kuchma, to play in Kiev’s main Independence Square at a show dubbed the Independence Concert.

“The ideology and spirit of The Beatles helped build the democratic aspirations for much of the Soviet society and eventually led to the peaceful collapse of the USSR and the independence of the former Soviet republics,” said a joint statement from Sir Paul and the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation. “For the first time [the Ukraine has] the opportunity to hear the songs that changed the world and created a new culture – the songs that we grew up with and became who we are.”

The concert, to be held on June 14, follows Elton John’s appearance in Kiev last year to promote HIV and Aids awareness. That concert attracted 200,000 people and led to Pinchuk establishing a series of AIDS projects in the country.

“It’s going to be [a] great evening hopefully for the Ukraine,” said McCartney. “Pull together, groove, rock ‘n’ roll — all together. We hope to see you there.”

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I’m telling you why – Santa Claus is coming to town… but he might not be alone.

The big man in red was joined by his good friend Sir Paul McCartney during a visit to the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) on December 17, as part of the facility’s 2nd annual Christmas party.

The singer spread some festive spirit around the 1,500 young patients of the children’s hospital, and also took part in a special karaoke session, belting out an impromptu version of S Club 7’s “Don’t Stop Movin’”.

“Sir Paul had everyone singing along,” said one of the partygoers. “The children were thrilled, but it was even more of a treat for the parents.”

The Great Ormond Street Hospital in London is a major children’s hospital that specializes in the most complex, life-threatening and life-limiting conditions. It regularly treats 150,000 patients a year. However, the government funding for the facility often falls short of the hospital’s needs, and the children rely on public donations for their on-going treatment.

“We’re delighted to be able to share this exciting day with the children, as they deserve a wonderful Christmas treat after coping so bravely with the tough year that many of them have had,” said TV presenter Tess Daly who, along with her husband Vernon Kay, also attended the event. “The Great Ormond Street Hospital does such fantastic work in helping the children get better.”

One of the children that Sir Paul met during his visit was 9-year-old Milly Pyne, who was born with a rare genetic disorder where the bones of her face and skull were fused together at birth. This brave young girl from Cumbria underwent surgery earlier this year, and earlier in December was honored at the Woman’s Own Children of Courage awards.

Sir Paul greeted Milly with a big hug, and then pretended to take a bite out of her medal.

The party also featured Santa’s Magical Workshop, where children could meet the big man, along with his elves and reindeer. They were also treated to festive food, and took part in games and toy making.

London and Austin host GuitarTown for charity

Sir Paul McCartney is among a group of celebrities who have donated giant guitars to exhibitions in both America and England, to be auctioned off over the next few months.

The exhibitions are part of the Gibson GuitarTown Galas And Auctions being held in London and Austin, and feature both 10-foot-high and regular-sized guitars designed and signed by artists and musicians. The sculptures have been on show in the cities for 10 weeks, and will soon be removed in preparation for the auctions, which will benefit a variety of local charities.

“I just fancied playing a big guitar!” joked Sir Paul, who signed a sculpture designed by cartoonist Rosie Brooks entitled And The Crowd Goes Wild. “I think this one will hopefully catch the imagination of the public and whoever is going to buy it at the auction, and raise money for The Prince’s Trust, the Teenage Cancer Trust, and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy – which are all great charities.”

GuitarTown London is an initiative of The Gibson Foundation, a division of Gibson Guitars that is dedicated to improving the quality of life through the support of arts, education, health and welfare, and environmental causes. It follows a similar event held in Nashville in 2005, which raised over $400,000 for local charities, and is coupled with an event currently being held in Austin, Texas. GuitarTown Austin features 65 giant sculptures and showcase guitars, which are currently on display in various locations around the city.

Celebrities such as Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid, Lance Armstrong, and Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines have all contributed their signatures to the artworks, to be auctioned at a special event at the Austin Grand Atrium on October 17. Bidders will have the chance to attend the Gala evening or bid online, with all proceeds going to the Health Alliance For Austin Musicians, the Austin Museum For Art, American Youthworks, and the Austin Children’s Museum.

“This public arts project showcases the enormous talent of both Austin’s visual and musical artists in the community,” said Henry Juszkiewicz, CEO of Gibson Guitars. “I hope Austin GuitarTown strikes a chord in people’s souls.”

The London GuitarTown Gala and Auction will be held on November 8, in the Indigo Room at the O2 Dome, and the sculptures are currently on display at More London in South Bank. Other artists to have contributed to the 61 items include Rod Stewart, Katie Melua, Corinne Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall, the Kaiser Chiefs, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, James Blunt, Cliff Richard, Mark Knopfler, and Roger Waters.

“It seems the electric guitar is here to stay,” said Brian May, guitarist for Queen, who has two works included in the auction. “Gibson GuitarTown London looks set to become a glorious testament to this fact, and will be raising money and awareness for three great charities. Butterflies Benefit British Wildlife

Over 120 British celebrities have put their artistic skills to the test for an online auction, and a dazzling collection of their original drawings and paintings will help raise money to save wildlife.

The artworks, which all feature a colorful array of butterflies and moths, are currently being auctioned on eBay, with the proceeds going to the Dorset Wildlife Trust, one of 47 local Wildlife Trusts across the UK, dedicated to the conservation of Britain’s unique wildlife. Famous names such as Daniel Craig, Ricky Gervais, and member of the newly reformed Spice Girls, Melanie C, are just some of those who have donated artworks to the auction, which started on September 16 and will run for several months.

“We have had a fantastic and generous response from all our celebrity artists,” said auction organizer, Les Bunce. “And sponsorship of our costs means that all the money raised will go straight to help wildlife in Dorset.”

The auction follows a similar auction held five years ago, in which celebrities such as Sean Bean, Joely Richardson, and Sir Paul McCartney painted their favourite orchids for the Trust. The event raised over $60,000, and the proceeds were used to monitor and improve wildlife habitats, plant trees, clean up roadsides, and raise public motivation to support conservation issues.

The items at this year’s event will be sold a few at a time, and each drawing will be available online for a week. As items are sold, new ones will be added. The event will culminate on December 13, with works donated by Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst being auctioned at a Grand Finale at Christie’s Auction House in London.

Stars Design Plates For Charity

For those who want to have dinner with the stars, this could be the next best thing. A selection of dinner plates designed by celebrities are for sale, with proceeds going to charity.

The plates feature designs by David Bowie, George Clooney, Giorgio Armani, Coldplay, Minnie Driver, and Sir Michael Caine, and are part of a fundraising initiative from 21st Century Leaders, a non-profit organization that plans to raise $3 million over three years through its “Whatever It Takes” celebrity-designed merchandise. So far, the organization has raised almost $1.5 million to fund “charitable projects in developing countries, and contribute to the protection of the environment and other causes”.

21st Century Leaders was founded by Charlotte di Vita, MBE, a goodwill ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The 39 year old founded her first charity, Trade plus Aid, in 1992, which has raised over $5 million and helped communities in 21 developing countries to become self-supporting. A desire to do more led di Vita to start Whatever It Takes, a unique charity art project where celebrities donate their own artwork, which is then transferred onto “merchandise with a meaning”.

“It’s 15 minutes of their time to do an artwork,” said di Vita. “And it’s not just for a one-off sale or auction – I can use it to create employment and royalties that will help the charities for years to come.”

Proceeds from the products are distributed to a charity of the designer’s choice, and the dinner plates (which retail for $20) will benefit Oxfam, Save the Children, CARE International, UNHCR, and Anti-Slavery International. Other products available include mugs featuring the designs of Claudia Schiffer, Ewan McGregor, and Nicole Kidman (also retailing for $20), T-shirts designed by the Kaiser Chiefs ($80), shoes designed by Ozzy Osbourne ($80), and wristbands by Joss Stone, Green Day, and Paul McCartney ($6).

Oprah Tops Celebrity Philanthropy A-List

A list of the 30 largest public donations made by celebrities in the past year puts Oprah in the top spot.

The Giving Back Fund, which encourages and advises on celebrity philanthropy, compiles its list each year. President Marc Pollick said, “Encouragement-by-example is the main reason for the Giving Back 30 list.”

Oprah gave $58.3 million to Oprah’s Angel Network and her recently-opened Leadership Academy.

Of the other celebrities high on the list, Barbra Streisand was in fourth spot, having given $11.75 million through her Streisand Foundation.

Tiger Woods took fifth place, giving $9.5 million to organisations including the Tiger Woods Learning Center funded by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Giving Back’s Marc Pollick praised an increasing trend in celebrity donations, saying, “Ten years ago when Slate magazine first published the Slate 60 reporting on the most generous American philanthropists, the last donor on their list gave $5 million. This year the last donor donated $30 million to charity. This is the type of growth we are hoping to inspire within the sports and entertainment community. One cannot help but be influenced by the generosity of his or her peers.”

Music Memorabilia Charity Auction Raises $2.4 Million

An auction of music memorabilia from celebrities including Jimi Hendrix, The Edge, Bono and Paul McCartney has raised $2.4 million, much of which will go to a charity for musicians.

Music Rising, whose founders include U2 guitarist The Edge, replaces musical equipment lost or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The Edge donated his favourite guitar, a 1975 Gibson Les Paul that has been played on every U2 tour to date. Like many of the items sold, the guitar’s forecast sale price of $60,000 to $80,000 was greatly exceeded by the eventual winning bid of $288,000.

Further guitars owned by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney were sold for $480,000, $192,000 and $81,600 respectively, while a pair of sunglasses belonging to Bono fetched $24,000.

Bidding at the auction on 21st April lasted three hours longer than planned, and all 204 lots were sold. 100% of the proceeds from many items will go directly to Music Rising, while other items were sold only partly to benefit the charity.

Kylie, Moby and McCartney Give Charity Canvases

The Hospital Gallery in London’s Covent Garden is to exhibit a collection of celebrities’ paintings before they are sold at auction to aid Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Celebrity contributors to “The Alive and Well Dog Project” include artist Damien Hirst, and such stars as Kylie Minogue, Paul McCartney, Moby, legendary soccer player Pelé, and comedian Ricky Gervais. Each of the 130 contributed paintings is an interpretation of a doodled dog drawn by the six-year-old son of event organiser Simon Freedman. The auction could raise as much as £300,000 for the children’s hospital.

The exhibition will run from January 29 to February 7, with the auction taking place at the gallery itself on January 31. A book of the project will also be available, in a limited run of 600 copies.

Great Ormond Street Hospital was famously given the rights to “Peter Pan” by author J. M. Barrie.

Heather Mills To Donate McCartney Divorce Settlement

Following the couple’s announcement of their planned divorce, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills have jointly denied media suggestions that the former model married the Beatle for his money.

Mills has now gone one further by vowing that the vast majority of any money she receives in a divorce settlement will go straight to Adopt-A-Minefield. The settlement is expected to range from £40m to £200m ($72m-$360m).

A spokesperson for Mills, who has already donated most of the money she has received in recent years to the charity, said, “The way she sees it is that there is no point the money sitting in a bank account gathering dust, the money has to be working.

“The more acres of minefield she can clear, the happier she will be.”
