Music Legends Support Hungerthon Celebrity Charity Auction

Some of music’s legendary performers have come together as part of a special celebrity charity auction for Hungerthon.

Hungerthon was started in 1975 as a partnership between WhyHunger and Infinity Broadcasting and has since expanded to become an autumn radio tradition among the New York tri-state area radio stations in the CBS, Clear Channel and Emmis Radio Groups, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio, with support from Citadel New York stations, Last.FM and more.

WhyHunger is a leader in building the movement to end hunger and poverty by connecting people to nutritious, affordable food and by supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and community empowerment. WhyHunger was founded in 1975 by the singer-songwriter Harry Chapin and radio talk-show host and current Executive Director Bill Ayres.

Music legend Bob Weir, rap superstar Lil’ Kim, NBA legend Bill Walton and real estate mogul Billy Procida joined forces at a Grateful Dead-inspired bash on Sunday to raise much-needed funds for the charity Table to Table.

The pre-Thanksgiving fundraiser took place prior to a sold-out concert of Grateful Dead spin off band Furthur at Madison Square Garden, and featured a sale of Grateful Dead attire by designer dReaMt Couture.

The top charity earner for 2009 has surprised many people, but is a testament to longevity in the music business. Sting To Perform At Charity Concert For Injured Boy

Christopher Rodriguez is a 10-year-old boy who was left paralyzed from the waist down after being hit by a stray bullet while attending a piano lesson in Oakland California on January 10th, 2008. Chris and his family face a difficult road ahead, but thanks to some big hearts, Christopher is about to benefit from an amazing event.

On May 25th, 2009, the Narada Michael Walden Foundation will produce a concert at the Louise M Davies Symphony Hall to benefit Christopher.

The concert, which is sure to be a sell out, will feature a performance by Sting. Joining the ex-Police front-man will be Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis of 5th Dimension Fame, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, Earl Klugh, David Grisman, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Gerald Alston of The Manhattans, Lisa Fischer, Tevin Campbell, Shanice Wilson, Jeanie Tracy, Ralphe Armstrong, Dale “Satchmo” Powers, the Narada Band, AND an orchestra of students from The San Francisco Conservatory of Music conducted by Michael Morgan of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, along with many other surprise performers.

All proceeds from the auctions will benefit longtime Grateful Dead-related nonprofits including: The Furthur Foundation – which funds progressive groups working on environmental and social change issues in the Bay Area and around the world: The Rex Foundation – a charity set up by The Grateful Dead in 1983 that aims “to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere”: and the Unbroken Chain Foundation – whose mission is to generate support for, and public awareness of, groups and individuals that bring hope and inspiration to communities where great need exists, and to create partnerships of people working together for a common good, especially in such areas as the arts, education and the environment. Proceeds will also go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and others. Each of these organizations have served and supported a wide range of organizations in the many areas where need exists.

Take It To The Limit With A Signed Eagles Guitar

Classic rock legends The Eagles are about to set off on their 2009 Long Road Out Of Eden tour, and to celebrate they are auctioning a signed guitar for charity.

The fantastic Takamine G-Series acoustic guitar has been signed by band members Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Scmidt, and proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Also going under the hammer this week for the charity are guitars signed by Miley Cyrus and Brooks and Dunn, as well as signed memorabilia from the Grateful Dead, Jewel, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsay Buckingham, Scarlett Johansson, Maroon 5, New Kids On The Block and many more.

The Grateful Dead Sign Guitar For Charity Auction

Deadheads – otherwise known as fans of The Grateful Dead – will want to get their hands on a signed guitar up for auction at the moment.

The reunited remaining members of the band – now known simply as The Dead – have signed the guitar to benefit HeadCount, an organization that encourages young people to vote. Established in 2004 by a group of artists, music industry professionals and fans – all determined to make sure the live music community is well-represented at the polls – the organization has registered over 200,000 new voters. Over 12,000 of these were registered at concerts performed by the Dave Matthews Band in 2004. The organization currently fields street teams in nearly 50 cities, and has ties to a diverse group of artists including Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Nine Inch Nails, My Morning Jacket, Maroon 5, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, The Indigo Girls, Gov’t Mule and the Disco Biscuits.

Joining The Dead – Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes, and Mickey Hart – in signing the guitar are Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, President Barack Obama’s transition team Co-Chair (and former White House Chief of Staff) John Podesta, and FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adlestein.
